Repealing the entire healthcare bill "probably" will not happen with President Barack Obama in the White House, the Senate's top Republican said Friday.
Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (Ky.) said at a speaking engagement that a full repeal may be unlikely, but that the GOP could be able to repeal parts of it in the fall, even if they don't win back majorities in both houses.
The Louisville Courier-Journal reported:
He acknowledged there is “probably not” a chance of repealing the full measure while President Barack Obama is in office.
Speaking to a Louisville audience, McConnell said he is hopeful for GOP gains in the fall election, based partly on recent poll results.
“Will that make full repeal possible? It might not,” McConnell said at a forum sponsored by Greater Louisville Inc., the metro chamber of commerce.

McConnell is setting up the future failure of the GOP.
Too few conservatives (of either Party) in Congress. Too many liberals of both stripes.
I am still convinced the courts, especially the Supreme Court, will strike it down anyway.
McConnell's just being practical here. But I thought it interesting that he said repeal of some parts would happen even if Repubs did NOT get a majority.
The only way to get full repeal under Obama is to have 67 Senators to vote to do it. We might — might — get 50 Republicans in Jan. 2011.

McConnell, despite his history, is absolutely right. We do what we can and keep emphasizing in 2012 that the only way to get full repeal is to have the GOP running the show.
What McConnell is saying is true as Congress can defund parts of the HC plan. The GOP will need the same political scenario the Rats had at first (White House and veto-proof majority) to repeal via legislation. The SCOTUS can strike it down on constitutionality issues.
I think you’re right in part. But remember that the courts don’t declare whole bills unconstitutional. They will probably gut this one, making the insurance purchasing requirement illegal, but there is a lot of crap that will stay.

He needs to add to that statement that they can defund it until we either have 1. the numbers to over ride a veto or 2. a new presidnet who won’t veto it!

There are simply not enough seats up for grabs to override an Obama veto. The repeal will have to wait until the His Majesty King Baraq I leaves the White House.
Repeal - just don’t see it happening with the current makeup of Congress.
Not funding portions - again don’t see it happening with the current makeup of Congress.
Unless changes are made in the November elections to shift the balance to a more conservative Congress (even with RINO’s in Conservative clothing) I don’t see it happening.
That’s my take on McConnell hedging his bets.
Most people know that they are going to have to wait to get a Republican in the White House.
The issue that the GOP must make repealing it a top priority.
Things can be taken out - other things can be put it - costs can be addressed - the mandate can be taken out etc etc

it’s nice to hope, but on what basis will they strike it down? also, remember, scotus includes some justices who care as much about the constitution as rep. phil hare.

But we certainly look forward to having a new President elected in 2012 who will sign a full repeal amongst other things."
