n 1935, Sinclair Lewis wrote a novel that envisioned a political tragedy akin to the Obama administration. It Can’t Happen Here is the story of Berzilius Windrip, a Democrat senator nominated for the presidency.

A charming, charismatic demagogue, he is elected by promising lots of free goodies for everyone. Once in power, President Windrip ruins the economy, neutralizes Congress and cracks down on dissent. He makes himself dictator, with assistance from a civilian national security force. Berzelius Windrip mmm mmm mmm!

I've been thinking a lot about "It Can't Happen Here" - I think it's time to reread it.

I've been thinking a lot about 1930s Germany. Chancellor Obama is busy setting up the trappings of a dictatorship.

I firmy beleive that many members (and their families) of both the Senate and House have been threatened by violence or worse.

That's the Chicago way!

As a Chicagoan, what bothers me so much about Chicago politics is not merely that it is venially corrupt, violent, and tyrannical, but that when Chicagoans talk about it amongst themselves, they know it and think it is funny and not a big deal. I even did it in my more foolish days. Truly, people get what government they deserve.

I am now looking for employment outside of Chicago, but as a financial mathematician, it is hard to find jobs outside of New York and Chicago. At least as far as taxes and standard of living go, Chicago is in fact the lesser of two evils.

Actually, Windrip is a populist, who promises every citizen $5000 a year. I think we’d call him a “progressive.” IIRC, he’s a National Socialist - and more than a little reminiscent of Obama.

But, but, but every citizen DOES get $5,000 a year right now .... from his stash ... if he deems it so then make it so ......

BTW

I don’t get $5,000 or even $500 or even $5 a year, now that I think about it.

Thanks, I will have to read the book by Parenti.

I have read Livy. It is fascinating, but he discussed Roman Republic history 300 years after the fact. The chronological events are probably accurate; quotes of the enemy are hard to swallow.

From Wiki: Huey Pierce Long, Jr. (August 30, 1893 - September 10, 1935), nicknamed The Kingfish, served as the 40th Governor of Louisiana from 1928 to 1932 and as a U.S. senator from 1932 to 1935. A Democrat, he was noted for his radical populist policies. Though a backer of Franklin D. Roosevelt in the 1932 presidential election, Long split with Roosevelt in June 1933 and allegedly planned to mount his own presidential bid.

Long created the Share Our Wealth program in 1934, with the motto "Every Man a King," proposing new wealth redistribution measures in the form of a net asset tax on corporations and individuals to curb the poverty and crime resulting from the Great Depression. To stimulate the economy, Long advocated federal spending on public works, public education, old age pensions and other social programs. He was an ardent critic of the Federal Reserve System's policies to reduce lending. Charismatic and immensely popular for his social reform programs and willingness to take forceful action, Long was accused by his opponents of dictatorial tendencies for his near-total control of the state government.

At the height of his popularity, Long was shot on September 8, 1935, at the Louisiana State Capitol in Baton Rouge. He died two days later at the age of 42. It is unclear whether he was assassinated, or accidentally killed by bodyguards who believed an assassination attempt was in progress. His last words were reportedly, "God, don't let me die. I have so much left to do."[1]

I agree. Livy was long after the facts. I recently read his books on the Second Punic War. If you ever do that you might want to pick up John Prevas’ Hannibal Crosses the Alps: The Invasion of Italy and the Second Punic War too.

I wish I had more time to read more Roman history! Especially Plutarch’s “Lives”

Caesar was a real commander-in-chief. Obambi is more like Nero or Caligula.

Caesar:
Who is it in the press that calls on me?
I hear a tongue shriller than all the music
Cry “Caesar!” Speak, Caesar is turn’d to hear.

Soothsayer:
Beware the ides of March.

Stupid. Why warn them?

I believe he's implying that the threats come from the administration. Certainly, the administration has threatened political reprisals for Democrats who get out of line. If they are threatening violence, I think at least one congressman or senator would speak up.
