Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio has started a program he calls "Pedal Vision," in which inmates pedal stationary bikes to generate electricity for television sets.
The bikes are customized to turn on connected TV sets once inmates at Phoenix's Tent City Jail pedal enough to generate 12 volts of electricity.
An hour of pedaling equals an hour of television.
Arpaio says inmates only will be able to watch television if they choose to pedal.
He says he started the program with female inmates because they seemed more receptive.
Arpaio says the only exercise female inmates have been getting is speed-walking around the tent yard.
He says Pedal Vision gives them a reason to get moving and a way to burn calories.
Excellent idea. Although I wonder if inmates in excellent physical shape is such a good thing. I wonder if we could hoook it up to the city power lines and make them power the city through pedaling all day and night.
LOL yeah greenie heads are gonna splode.
Ed Begley should be proud, as I heard he as a pedal powered toaster.
Great Fat Fighting Idea. Michelle should commend Sheriff Joe for a way to fight youth obesity. LOL
LOL!!! That Sheriff Joe is sumpin else! When he's not busy saving Arizona, he's out there saving the planet!!!
Love it!
bttt
/begin sarc
Too bad he endorsed that flaming socialist Romney.
/end sarcasm
The sheriff has endorsed Jesse Kelly (R) in the AZ 8 race to unseat Giffords.
I think ol’ Joe would make a wonderful Governor of AZ.
Here’s hoping we see a win.
LOL. and “you betcha” he’s awesome!!!
Indeed!
wow, would be nice to seee the inmates of California help solve the issue of lack of energy for that Green State.
It's not. That's why here in Ohio, we got rid of weights in prisons after a deadly prison riot in 1993.
Never happen in the inmate-coddled Leftist state of CA.
Yet another innovation in in penal services from Sheriff Arpaio! Not only is it a form of green power but it can be used to counter obesity in our jails.
Way to go Joe!
Hey Joe do pay-per-view on the sports channel and let people bet on who generates the most juice too, there’s help for the budget too.
The ultimate bet would be how long it would take to fry someone in the electric chair that way.
One of the mechanisms of law preventing the State from using prisoners as a resource, is precisely to prevent the State from establishing slavery. Of course, taxes more or less do the same thing, now.
ingenious. I think they should force the inmates to pedal, store the electricity somehow, and sell it on the open market.
From “green” baloney to “green” energy! Sheriff Joe is da man! He’s keeping the planet green. (Except here in the desert southwest where everything is either brown or pastel colors.)
Years ago a National Lampoon cover showed a black man on a stationary bicycle coupled to a generator powering a television set as a white couple sitting on a sofa watched. The title of that issue was “Black Power Comes To South Africa”. In smaller letters was a caption “You Bring DeBeers, Let’s Have Apartheid”. Why do I still remember this shi*?
Good for Joe! Teaching the tried and true - if you want something, you work for it.
Tired inmates are also less likely to cause trouble.
Good point.
Go JOE. Hope he runs for governor and with JD in Senate - AZ will be one kick@$$ state!
Great work again, Joe!
Too bad the reporter doesn’t understand how batteries are charged. Twelve-volt lead-acid batteries are charged by chargers putting out 13-14 volts or so. You can’t charge a battery with 12 volts. Therefore, right after the inmates start pedaling, they are putting out more than 12 volts. A battery charged to 12 volts is only about 20% or less charged. When the batteries are fully charged, their output is about 12.6 volts to as high as 13 or more.
But I don’t expect reporters to understand anything having to do with science.
Sheriff Joe - we love him like a hamster loves its wheel.
LOL! It’ll be fun to see what the pro-illegals and the Communists whine about with this!
Not a bad idea maybe there is hope for this country.
You are assuming that there are batteries. I am not sure this is the case.
Think globally, act locally.
I’m not concerned about a fit/unfit body but more concerned about an unfit mind - therein lies a problem.
Maybe he can develop a peddle power air conditioner? I love this guy!
Pray for America
This guy is too much!
I agree. Greenie lib heads are going to totally explode!!!
He must spend at least an hour a day coming up with ways to freak out libs and dems...
HAAHAHAHA!!!!
great idea.
I seem to recall that MANY years ago the concept was in a book (The Ugly American?) where it was used somewhere in Africa.
I think he would make a great POTUS.
Who wants to take bets on how long it will be before reports start surfacing that JOE IS A RACIST by even suggesting this?
Well~! We can all get behind this “green initiative”.
But-but all that motion converts oxygen to evil CO2! Will they need carbon credits?
Yep, saw it on HGTV. While he touts his ‘green’ living he’s burning up mega watts of energy filming his life style for an entire show season.
Off hand I don't think it will be long.
Next big story for the MSM, right after the earthquake.
Nominated for best posting of the day!
I think you are right. It is probably just direct from generator to TV. Simpler.
If there is no battery, does that mean they can take a break during commercials - and let the picture go dark? Not that much different (except for the bars on the windows) from me using my DVR fast forward for the same purpose.
Brings back memories of the old song about “I ride my bicycle...” and “Fat bottomed girls...” Wish I could remember all the words and who wrote it.
