Ronald Reagan said it best.
"The nine most terrifying words in the English language are: 'I'm from the government and I'm here to help.'"
I was reflecting on this quote in light of Washington's plan, as part of "health-care reform," to nationalize all college loans.
This is an aspect of the legislation that hasn't received nearly as much attention as it deserves, because it's one of those seemingly innocuous, do-gooder notions that most people just don't understand.
Why would a government deeply, hopelessly in debt seek a monopoly on college loans?
Obviously, Washington under the rulership of Barack Obama, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid intends to grab power any way it can. Obviously, there is a desire to increase the public's dependency on government. Obviously, such a move will result in most college graduates being in servitude to the state.
But there's even more at stake in this ploy.
There are a handful of colleges across the country that remain independent of federal control – Hillsdale College in Michigan, Grove City College in Pennsylvania and Patrick Henry College in Virginia.
These colleges do not accept federal dollars even indirectly through student financial-aid programs. If they did, they understand they would have to accept federal control over their curricula and other matters.
In other words, they have chosen to take a very principled stand to remain free, independent and to pursue academic excellence.
What will happen to those few institutions holding out against intrusions by Washington if students are forced to get loans from the federal government?

Good point. Hopefully the courts will take the latest fed monopoly powers into consideration the next time they make another ruling. Then again, the courts are packed with liberals with a political agenda, so no chance.
Can’t we all see the day that some Dem/Commie introduces a bill to forgive all student loan debt for African Americans. It is the Camel’s Nose under the tent for the Reparations crowd.

It is worse than that even.
It means they can also control what a college/university teaches.
It also means that they can deny anyone who doesn’t agree with them an education ,there by also deny them employment in the government itself which can change/set policy since so many positions require a college degree.
If they can control who gets and education , what that education entails and who can set policy then they also control policy itself.
My daughter attends Grove City College, a 130 year old college in PA.
They were one of the earlies colleges to accept women to their school ( long before the suffrage movement came about ). Their athletic programs were well balanced with men and women programs long before TITLE IX came about. Early on, they were accepting students who took Federal loans to pay for their tuition.
In the mid 70’s ( Carter’s era ), the Federal Government demanded that they sign an agreement that would force them to adhere to the new TITLE IX law ( requiring that men and women programs be balanced), which would also have subjected the entire school to federal regulations, even future ones not yet issued.
New legislation subjected every department of any educational institution that received federal funding to Title IX requirements.
In response, Grove City College withdrew from the Stafford loan program entirely, and established its own loan program in association with PNC Bank. The move earned the respect and admiration of many influential academics, including David Warren, the president of the National Association of Colleges and Universities.
Warren said in a 1996 interview that Grove City has a “history of making bold and principled decisions. And a lot of colleges sympathize with what they’ve done.”
Currently, Grove City does not allow its students to accept federal financial aid of any kind, including grants, loans, and scholarships.
The school thrives and charges their students ( tuition plus board and lodging included ) just $20,000 ( half of what all other private colleges charge ).
Grove City was ranked as the nation’s second most politically conservative college by US News and World Report. Human Events Magazine ranks it as one of the cream of the crop in America’s conservative colleges. The conservative think tank Free Congress Foundation, includes Grove City among its list of top colleges that provide excellent liberal arts.
The Young America’s Foundation placed Grove City in its Top 10 Conservative Colleges list. The schools on this list offer coursework and scholarship in conservative thought and emphasize principles including smaller government, strong national defense, free enterprise, and traditional values.
Fiske Guide to Getting Into the Right College concurs and lists Grove City among its top 10 conservative colleges.
According to the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s 2007 publication of Choosing the Right College, the 2007 US News and World Report college guide ranks Grove City the number one “best value” among northern comprehensive colleges—the fifth year running the school has earned that distinction. The school has a total cost (including tuition, room, and board) of $20,000 a year. Similarly, Barron’s Educational Series has called Grove City College a “Best Buy” and USA Today ranks Grove City among the top 100 best value colleges in the nation for 2009.
It has also been positively reviewed in the Intercollegiate Studies Institute’s guide Choosing the Right College: The Whole Truth about America’s Top Schools. Princeton Review also ranks Grove City College as among the Top 20 in career/job placement services based on satisfaction of students who graduate from the school.
And get this -— In two consecutive nationwide studies made by the Intercollegiate Studies Institute (ISI) in cooperation with researchers from the University of Connecticut’s Department of Public Policy to determine the extent of civic literacy in higher education, Grove City College students ranked among the top 5 nationally in terms of knowledge of U.S. history, government, economy and international relations. The study was based on the results of a multiple-choice test given to 14,000 randomly chosen freshmen and seniors on 50 college and university campuses. In two consecutive years of ISI’s study, Grove City was ranked number 4 in 2006 and number 2 in 2007, above most Ivy league universities.
The school’s college debating team is ranked number 1 by the National Parliamentary Debate Association, the biggest intercollegiate debate league in the United States.
College Prowler, the largest publisher of college content in the United States, gave Grove City College an “A+” rating for the safety and security of the campus, according to its latest released rankings. Only 12 schools in the USA received the highest ratinglence of campus theft.
Schools like Grove City and Hillsdale continue to prove that you don’t need Washington butting into your affairs to thrive and be excellent.
Cynically, I must say that even if the governmnt reserved al lcollege positions for African-Americans that they would still would not compete. Their famiy structure is so screwed that it would not matter. They could no more compete than whites can in the NBA.

Hillsdale once turned down a bowl game in the 1950’s because they would not let Hillsdale’s black running back play.
Liberals want to give the impression that Conservatives are against progress when in fact schools like Hillsdale and Grove City have been proving that long before government programs were put in place, truly conservative schools were years ahead of them in terms of progress.
Is there a comprehensive list out there somewhere of all US colleges that do not accept federal funds?
Thank you. Yes, I have that particular list but I know there’s more. For example, Amberton University in Garland TX also does not take federal funds. I’m sure there’s even more out there.
