Heavy rains/snow weigh down the plates. Spring runoff from the mountains lightens the load. The dynamic changes in load plus the effects of the lunar gravity waves (tides) provide additional forces upon the plates.

Heavy rains/snow weigh down the plates. Spring runoff from the mountains lightens the load. Only when you have hundreds of feet of 'snow'. Do the math, the weight of your general snow in the mountains does not even come out to even a fraction of a percent when compared to the whole isostatic mass of the mountains. Gravational forces do have some effect, but they are minor compared to the tectonic stresses involved.

I woke up suddenly early this a.m. but it was more like 4:54 a.m. so it wasn’t due to the aftershock... slept through it.

Well I am in our second story addition on the house that rocks around in the wind so I think I feel them more. Even today with the rain and some wind the room is moving but I could definitely feel the difference between the normal movement and a quake. I am not really shocked at how strong the quake was felt here yesterday but the length of time. I have never felt a quake even come close to as long as that one was. After about 30 seconds I started to get worried because I started thinking we were really going to get pounded. Overall though it really wasn’t that scary because it really was rolling instead of shaking. The one that woke me up this morning was the same rolling around.

It was VERY long yesterday. I’ve been through many quakes but that time frame disoriented me, and then the water sloshing up and out of the pool, which continued well after the rolling....

She specializes? in Tsunamis and even built a portable tank to simulate them and carts it around the north coast to fairs and other venues. She has done extensive Core drilling up here to check the record of past Tsunamis which helps us with preparation for one...

Have we ever had tsunamis on the West Coast?
I know they’ve been devastating in the South Pacific and SE Asia, but when we get warnings they never happen.

Eleven people died in Crescent City Cal in 1964 when a tsunami generated by the great Anchorage Ak earthquake hit...

There was also one there in 2006 from a quake in Japan. When you are a little older I will tell about one I experienced while clamming at Calm Beach between McKinleyville ( Tulsa by the Sea) and Trinidad Ca about 50 years ago...

Yes, about 6-7 miles from Tijuana. In fact, not to be Palin like, but I can see Mexico from my house.

Something big definitely moved to create a 7.2. I’m concerned that it could create a pressure wave traveling along other faults.
