Report: Obama's heavy limo will not get a hybrid drivetrain
Autobloggreen ^ | April 6, 2010 | Sebastian Blanco

President Obama's limo is a basically a diesel-powered tank. When he came into office, the new President asked if he could get one with a hybrid drivetrain for his Presidential Topkick Cadillac to go along with his push for greener vehicles across the board. During a recent stop at a North Carolina manufacturing facility that builds battery components for hybrid cars, Obama was asked about the status of his hybrid limo hopes, and admitted that this isn't going to happen.

The reason, the President said, was that the Secret Service rejected his idea "because the cars that I'm in are like tanks," adding "there's a little bit of extra stuff on there." That extra stuff (security stuff, mostly) means the Presidential limo is about two to three times heavier than the average car, according to CBS, and so would not be able to accelerate with a hybrid powerplant.

It sucks to be president, doesn't it? You cannot even get the car you want, just like the rest of us under the new mileage standards you announced.

If you were true to your principles, you would resign right now! (smile)

I noticed the open door on the Presidential Limo as Obama got out and I thought it looks like it is as tough as a bank vault door.

Well, DUH. A “hybrid powertrain” in the presidential limo. Let’s see, even if it was feasible from a security perspective, I’m sure it wouldn’t have cost more than a few hundred thousand or so to build out a custom drivetrain for that vehicle in order to save a few dollars in fuel. Good grief, the stupidity of these people knows no end.

And as they’re trapped inside
At a used car lot on the other side of town
A liberal guy and a liberal gal
Buy a Yugo....

And they drive with pride...

Obama needs a vehicle that better reflects his worldview—a sedan chair carried by six taxpayers.

Another example of how clueless this guy is.

I’m all for him in a Prius.

Do you think the SS White House detail members will get hybrid handguns and submachine guns?

No, it just looks vaguely like a DTS. It’s a lot closer to a 3/4 ton Suburban diesel, with DTS front sheetmetal, and a custom body. It would be feasible to make the thing a hybrid, by taking a route similar to what Toyota did with the Prius, and what GM is doing with their light trucks, by adding one of those pancake electric motors in the transmission, but the only benefit would be slightly snappier acceleration, and with the added weight of the battery or capacitor bank needed to give that extra thrust, on top of the 5-7 tons of armor and whatnot, the tradeoff would be negligible with a lot of added drivetrain complexity. I wouldn’t be surprised to learn that the drivetrain in the presidential limo is actually de-electronicized to minimize points of failure.

But if he would inflate his tires, he could make up the whole world’s carbon deficit.

This is so stupid, the residential airplane burns a gazillion million gallons an hour and he worries his limo. Not to mention that the presidential limo is the wrong car to experiment on with new technology.

Well, I won't really get into the type of car his 'status' merits as pResident, but I will say this: If Zer0 had the type of car that he really merits based on real experience, real work history, being a real documented person/citizen in general, and based on his real worth, he'd be driving a hoopty.

Let’s see, even if it was feasible from a security perspective...

An EMP could easily render an electric/hybrid drivetrain immobile. No idea if the current drivetrain is vulnerable to such.

Although there may be a question about his eligibility to be president of the U.S., he is the “boss” of GM so he should be able to get what he wants without too much trouble I would think.
