Reporter's notebook: What really happens at Tea Party rallies
CNN ^ | April 7, 2010 | Shannon Travis

(CNN) -- When it comes to the Tea Party movement, the stereotypes don't tell the whole story.

Here's what you often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: offensive posters blasting President Obama and Democratic leaders; racist rhetoric spewed from what seems to be a largely white, male audience; and angry protesters rallying around the Constitution.

Case in point: During the health care debate last month, opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver. The incidents made national headlines, and they provided Tea Party opponents with fodder to question the movement.

But here's what you don't often see in the coverage of Tea Party rallies: Patriotic signs professing a love for country; mothers and fathers with their children; African-Americans proudly participating; and senior citizens bopping to a hip-hop rapper.

Last week, I saw all of this during a five-city Western swing as the Tea Party Express national tour made its way across the country. CNN was along for the ride, and I was charged with planning CNN's coverage for five stops in two states: St. George, Provo and Salt Lake City, Utah; and Grand Junction and Denver, Colorado.

No, not NORMAL according to CNN. We’re PATRIOTS, and that ain’t normal. It’s really funny the way this woman acts SO SURPRISED that people are actually nice to her. What an idiot. They sure live in an ivory tower. They sure have no idea what this thing really is.

Article appears to try to be fair, but didn’t mention that neither the shouting of racial slurs nor the spitting has proven to be true, even though used as a “case in point”.

It never happened, of course. But they will never ever stop stating it as a fact.

From her article: “opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver.”

NO, YOU DID NOT SEE THIS.

It DID NOT HAPPEN.

It doesn’t matter to them if its true or not, it is now an established fact that will be mentioned in every story on the TEA parties. Notice they never mention Kenneth Gladney getting beat up.

We could make a movie about NOT making a movie about the assassination of our president. What would they say about that?

Today’s Socialists are just as dangerous as all the socialists before them. Everything is somebody else’s fault, all their competitors must be hated, all the competitors are “stupid.”

Nonsense!
This has been repeatedly proven to be false, yet CNN keeps repeating these falsehoods anyways. Andrew Breitbart went as far as to offer $100,000 for any of these Democrats (who all had video cameras), to being proof of racist epithets and up till now, no one has accepted the challenge.

Not a bad article, except for the allegation of the racial slur being reported as fact.

"During the health care debate last month, opponents shouted racial slurs at civil rights icon Georgia Rep. John Lewis and one person spit on Missouri Rep. Emanuel Cleaver."

Hmmmm... the journalist for this story gets an EPCI FAIL from me for reporting unsubstantiated allegations as fact.

freakin’ O’Reilly, Steele have really sunk us with their respect for Lewis. How come none are asking the other black reps who surrounded him to account?

Isn’t the Breitbart award for finding evidence at $100K?

How is the article supposedly trying to be fair when they start right off telling the same lie.

When they accuse Tea partiers of racism. I have been to a couple and havent heard any racism.

They consider anyone who doesnt with Obama as racist , and that is Horse dung.

True that.

Notwithstanding the obvious misstatements already pointed out on this thread, it is otherwise noteworthy in its description of the proceedings (considering the source).

The ‘the other side’ is acknowledging that TEA has become a valid “political movement”, and it NOT exclusionary.

Shannon will be called in for an “orientating session” with her bosses at CNN.

But she did at least get in the obligatory “racial slurs” and “spitting” stories (lies). That shows she has some promise within CNN.
