Pit Bulls are very good tempered dogs. "Exterminating the breed" is an overreaction to misleading news stories. First, there are a huge number of Pit Bulls out there, the overwhelming majority of which wouldn't hurt a fly (well, maybe a fly). There are many other breed that have a greater tendency towards unprovoked violence, but, because there are fewer of them, we aren't inundated with stories about them. Many of the small yappy dogs are much more dangerous towards children, as well as breeds like the Husky, which seem to have retained a lot of their wolfishness. On the grand scale, Pit Bulls are less dangerous than most.

Second, Pit Bulls are disproportionately owned by clueless, irresponsible owners (words cannot describe how dumb many of them are). If you take any breed, and have them disproportionately owned by dumb people, then that breed will cause problems. Period. It has nothing to do with the breed itself.

While it is true that Pit Bulls are good fighters, they are not the best. And they are definitely not the most inherently dangerous.

In addition, since Pit Bulls are banned in many dog-friendly apartments/condos, responsible there are fewer responsible owners who can have a Pit Bull, meaning that the proportion of poorly owned Pit Bulls is even higher, because they are disproportionately not owned by responsible people.

Given all of this, it is actually surprising that there are not more problems. Probably due to the fact that they are sweet, good natured animals.

Your reaction is typical of people who take an immediate response to the news, but fail to really look at this issue with any clarity or insight. If Pit Bulls are banned, then certain, um, cultures, will simply move onto another. And then the problem could get even worse, because they will almost definitely choose (or create) a breed that is more prone to violence, and more dangerous.

The real solution is to enforce laws that protect both the animal and society as a whole. Actually, the really real solution is to do away with hair-brained government programs that create such a large dependency class, who never have the incentive to become educated on anything.

2 or more dogs together are a “pack” and packs are very unpredictable! I very rarely will let my dog near two strange dogs when we are out walking.
