Somali hip hop artists hit back at Islamists with rap

NAIROBI, April 9 — For centuries, Somalis used poetry and songs to pass protest messages to powerful rulers they were too afraid to confront directly.

Now, some young Somalis are using rap to speak out against Islamists who they say are using religion to wage war in their country.

The 11-member Waayaha Cusub band, currently in exile in neighbouring Kenya, wants its rap lyrics to encourage fellow Somalis to stand up to Islamist rebels known as al Shabaab.

They have handed out at least 7,000 free copies of their newly-released album titled “No To Al Shabaab” to residents in Nairobi’s Eastleigh neighbourhood, home to many Somali migrants.

Al-Shabaab cannot keep a subjugated Somali populace under their grip for long - hip-hop has emboldened the Somali youth to rise up against the ruling Islamic government.

That’s pretty brave of them considering listening to music can be a death sentence.

Thanks for posting this My Knowledge.

I give it an "8." I like the beat, and the lyrics are ok.

Just kidding. In our film, "Rockin' the Wall," we've been interviewing American rockers---Doors, Toto, Vanilla Fudge, Billy Joel, etc.---and we delve into this notion of the "power of music," and whether music can break through some of this Islamist crap.

Somewhat true, somewhat not. In the Cold War, the Reagan administration officials told us that funding ROCK via Voice of America was crucial to undermining the Soviet system. I’m not downplaying Star Wars or Reagan’s military buildup at all; but I am saying that there is another side, and Gorbachev once said that “rock brought down the wall.” Sure, he didn’t want to give Reagan credit, but you’d be surprised how many people we’ve interviewed behind the Iron Curtain whose hopes were kept alive by music, particularly rock and jazz.
