A top Iranian general said on Monday that the military's newly produced aerial drones, which have aroused US concern, are capable of gathering intelligence and striking at targets.
"We have made good advances and production is going on at suitable rate," ground forces commander Brigadier General Ahmad Reza Pourdastan told reporters ahead of the annual Iran Army Day on April 18.
"These planes would be used for operations as well as surveillance which means they can send us online footage from faraway distances and can also be armed for striking at targets," the local news agency quoted the senior commander as saying.
He also said that Iran was working on producing unmanned helicopters, whose details would be announced later, agency reported.

One wonders how secure the data links are, especially since Iran does not have military communications satellites. Even better than jamming might be “recruitment” or in the world of John LeCarre, “flipping”.
I agree. There data links are probably very susceptible to some sort of jamming attack by the U.S. or Israel
I would rather have the U.S. controller take over the drone and either bring it down for inspection or turn it around and crash it into an Iranian military asset.
I agree.
More bluster from a nation of limited industrial development and with slender resources for the prosecution of war. The advantage the US has enjoyed since the height of the Second World War is that we have been able to outproduce, outman and outfight any real or potential opponent on the battlefield, anywhere on the planet, and do it, often without the full psychological advantage of being seen as the liberators of oppressed people.
It was not always so. We were horribly unprepared in 1941 to go to war, economically and morally. Only when the rascally Germans doublecrossed Joe Stalin, and invaded Mother Russia, were the hearts and minds of many of the “influential” people turned to the project of “protecting” the right of an International Socialist regime to do exactly everything that a National Socialist regime was doing, but to be excused for that behavior because it was “progressive”, did the thought of waging war become “acceptable”. Orwelliam double-think and cognitive dissonance before those terms were popularized.
As a nation, we have wavered at times on the projection of that national power, and the current regime now acting in the name of the United States, has straddled and waffled most significantly, thus encouraging potential enemies to a far greater degree than any time since 1940.
A pipsqueak country of mud huts and run by an oligarchy of bearded men with burning eyes has set itself up on a holy mission to humble the US. They have been running on a false economy of having a valuable resource in large supply that they could sell to a world hungry for energy sources, yet they nave the industrial capacity of some central African tribal conclave.
And they are going to build sophisticated drone attack platforms? Excuse me, but they will have to import practically all the high-tech stuff that goes into the making of these craft, this is not the manufacture of IEDs in a back room off the marketplace. In an all-out confrontation, Iran could not hold out for a week.
The only way Iran could possibly succeed is for the US to pre-emptively surrender. And there seems to be a lot of sentiment for that today from the current occupant of the Oval Office.
