“Last, but not least, we need a tracking system for the Illegals who come into our country with a VISA and simply “overstay”.”

According to an old rancher, “Ear notching is cheap and works.”

He also said “..it is like ear piercing, but larger.”

My neighbor has a commercial crop of weed. Pot is effectively legal in Southern Oregon. There is a store that sells it down the street.

I don’t partake, thanks.

Q: "What would it do for the smuggling efforts to bring in Xanex, cocaine, et al?"

A: Nothing.

Cutting out 50% of the cash flow for the cartels reduces their impact by 50%. Their employment, bribes, border crossings, etc. would all decline by about 50%.

The other stuff would remain in place.

I'm not saying that there is a good solution to be found in the Drug War. I'm saying there is a less bad one: legalization of pot. It's not like you can't get ahold of as much as you'd like any time any where. Like alcohol prohibition, the main question is, how much are you willing to fund the gangs?

Just to be realistic, you have to weigh the advantages and disadvantages of a social policy like pot prohibition. I've come to the conclusion that the disadvantages outweigh the advantages. I could write 20 bullet points on both sides of the argument. I think the strength of the argument is moving toward legalization. We lost the war on pot. Let's have law face up to reality.

1. Legalize pot

2. Use the military to defend our border

3. Shoot to kill

4. Automatic death sentence for anyone caught selling drugs of any kind

5. 5 year minimum sentence for possession of drugs.

6. Divert the funds being unused to build a wall to build more prisons.

There, problem fixed...

Ping!

Variation on a theme - we had smugglers down here in Cochise County use ‘cloned’ USPS trucks several years ago to smuggle in their drugs.

"Shoot to Kill"

The economic incentives for Mexicans to come to America are so strong that even a wall won't work. They'll blow it up.

I agree, the only thing that will actually stop illegal immigration is machine guns killing border crossers.

The question is really, at what point will the American body politic develop enough nerve to allow the killing of Jose who is just trying to get a job in America to feed his starving family in Mexico?

When we're perfectly prepared to gun down Jose, then we can fix the border problem. Until then, everything is just chatter.

I'm not saying that I agree we should shoot Jose; I've not been forced to make that tough choice. I'm saying that our willingness to do so is the only real solution. Everything else is a band aid.

Hi UM

Sounds like you could be living in my town. Did that store just get an OK from the City Council to move from one location to another just across the street?

“Two points:

1) Anyone ready for a real wall yet?

2) Legalizing pot would cut cartel profits by 50%. Anyone ready to cut the size of the criminal gangs by 50%?”

Those are the only logical conclusions at this sad point in time.
