Well, Duh. I’ve been reading the handwriting on the wall for a DECADE or more, now. Why do you think we’ve rearranged our life to compensate for the bad times ahead? Just for giggles? ;)
I’ll let you all know when I’m broke; but don’t hold your breath. And this isn’t ‘Pride’ talking; this is hard work, economic study, hard work meeting opportunity (some just call that, ‘Luck’) and a clear grasp of REALITY talking. :)
You know, not EVERYONE was jumping off of roofs during The Great Depression. My family was one that wasn’t. We’re made of tougher stuff. :)

As were most of any profits taken from any plant-closing. The U.S. remains the most profitable venue in the world for investment.

During the Depression, my dad and a couple of his brothers bought a couple of balers and got to work baling hay. They made enough money that they could buy new cars while a lot of people in the area were going down to the county seat to pick up a bag of free groceries.
I'm curious as to what you saw and what steps you took.
I do realise beyond any doubt that capitalism is the only system that ever has really worked. This remains true and probably because of human nature will always be the case. The shrinking middle class,though, must be addressed. Service jobs will not do this. Green manufacturing jobs will not either. We need value added jobs such as manufacturing and mining.
I realise that modern environmental regulation make this all but impossible, so it is not the fault of corporations for the most past. It seems though my original statement bears some truth. Example: G.E. lighting Division in N.C. has always been a profitable division. There was an attempt to relocate production to Mexico.Because the quality could not be achieved there the Mexican plant production was put on hold.This was money and jobs to be taken from a small community. There were no plans to reinvest anything in that community. Unbridled capitalism gave us the Love Canal and sometimes worse.
It only doubled because we lost homestead exemption on our property. Everyone in Georgia did. And since my property tax was equal to the homestead exemption, it doubled for me.
Oh for my family its dropped a whole lot more then that.

My Grandpa (who I miss to this day!) was a young man of 25 during the Depression. He had a wife, a two year old son (my Dad) and his aged Father-in-Law to support.
Grandpa cleaned out barns. He delivered milk and eggs and newspapers. He worked in a bakery. He collected ‘recyclables’ (tin cans and glass bottles and newspapers) for the pennies they would bring. He’d find old furniture at the curb, fix it up and sell it. He’d change the oil in your car or fix a flat for a buck. He’d hunt and fish and glean; anything to make sure his family was fed and housed. He ended up with a stash of yarn from someone...so he learned to knit rather than let it go to waste, LOL!
(My Grandma was VERY wealthy; her side of the family truly lost it ALL during those years; hence the reason for Grandpa having to support his FIL as well as his wife & child.)
And when all of that was over with...what? Seven YEARS of Hard Times and THEN WWII? He went on to be a machinist (due to the war) and eventually made parts for the NASA space missions.
I mean, let’s get a grip, LOL! I’m not going to let the idiots in Congress put ME in the Poor House. I’ll roll up my sleeves and get to work instead of standing around b*tchin’ about it. :)
Twelve years ago I came into my inheritence (from the Grandpa who worked so hard in my previous post) and instead of p*ssing it away on a car or a boat or a vacation home or a McMansion (this WAS the Roarin’ 90’s mind you), I bought gold and silver. Not on paper; the physical stuff.
I was just out of the Army three years, and of course I was used to living on next to nothing all that time, LOL! During those years, I had real estate holdings, which I sold at small profits along the way. (Dad managed them for me while I was overseas or in another state.)
So, I bought a small farm, knowing that I could at least FEED myself if push came to shove. (Large garden; orchard, small livestock, etc.)
I’ve been trading commodities since I was a teenager; most girls bought Tiger Beat magazine and lipstick with their allowance; I bought cocoa bean futures. I learned all I could about commodities; remember the Hunt Brothers and silver in the mid-70’s? An excellent example of getting a little too greedy. ;)
I also learned EVERYTHING I could about keeping my tax dollars in MY pocket and out of the hands of Government. After President Reagan, I knew we were sunk for a good, long time...as far as real leadership and fiscal restraint was concerned; and yes, even HE spent more money than I thought necessary!
I’ve always lived below my means. I’m as self-sufficient as I can be, though I don’t want to give up my computer. :)
I read anything I could get my hands on having to do with economics and money and how to make it and how to save it. Seriously, I’ve never made over $40K a year in my entire working life, 35 years and counting; but I lack for nothing.
No secret. Just paying attention to the bottom line, really. You know the good times never last long and the bad times will ALWAYS follow. Be prepared.
I could go on about the Bad Times I’ve lived through, but really, I don’t dwell on the negatives when life is generally so sweet. :)
Good lesson there. But you know the government can and has seized gold before.
I hope you retain ALL of your hard earnings and attain as much wealth as you can legally. More power to you... that is what I believe in. I am a Capitalist... not a corporatist. I know that you probably will not believe this but I hope that you prove me wrong.
I have owned my own businesses for over 36 years now. I grew them and nurtured them and made myself and others wealthy in the process. Half of what we all built together has been destroyed. I should be so busy at this time that I would normally have to work 30 hours overtime per week. My businesses are not dead but they are at maybe 20% of what we had last year. My customers are all feeling the crunch and hate what is happening to our Country, cannot stand to even listen to obama’s voice and see everything that they ever loved and believed about America being destroyed. This does not make them secure enough to spend any more money than they absolutely have to spend or that they feel justified in spending on right now due to the coming hyper-inflation that will rise and a VAT tax that has been promised... sooner or later... but it will ALL happen.

I don’t feel I’m any more ‘deserving’ than the next guy; I truly don’t compete or keep score...I just want Government to leave me the h#ll alone! (I’m sure you do, too.)
Maybe you’re right; I am in a relatively recession-proof business. I manage a Garden Center. Our sales have been up for the past four years; mainly due to people wanting to grow more of their own food and be more self-sufficient. Also, no one can afford to move, so they’re making their ‘nest’ nicer and enjoying the back yard and patio instead of a trip to DisneyLand these days. I’m the one now working those extra 20-30 hours picking up the slack; we had a key person leave our staff right before Crunch Time. (I should be in bed, but FR is my free therapy, LOL!)
So, there is a silver lining to the down times for some of us. Kind of like the Undertaker being really busy during a plague. ;)
