Shock! Horror! National Enquirer wins a Pulitzer. Not
Guardian (Manchester, UK) ^ | April 13, 2010 | Ed Pilkington

The announcement last night that the National Enquirer had won a Pulitzer Prize, America's most prestigious journalistic award, for its coverage of the Democratic presidential candidate John Edwards's extra-marital affair sent shockwaves through the media establishment.

Actually, that paragraph is entirely inaccurate, a charge often levelled at National Enquirer stories. In fact, the panel of Pulitzer judges, co-ordinated through New York's Columbia Journalism School, steered clear of rewarding the tabloid and opted instead for more conventional outlets including the New York Times and the Philadelphia Daily News.

The question of whether or not the Enquirer would take a Pulitzer has had New York's media world agog since it was announced that the prize-giving committee had decided to allow a nomination for the magazine to go ahead.

The Enquirer could not be ignored, having forced its way on to the political agenda by dint of its sustained campaign to expose Edwards's sexual indiscretions. While mainstream papers kept silent on the subject, the Enquirer ran a series of articles on the Democratic candidate's relationship with a video-maker, Rielle Hunter, revealing in December 2007 that they had had a child together.

lol... probably because they were getting outdone by the MSM on lies, BS, and general non-news, and found out they could earn more money by filling in the gaping hole in objective reporting (compared to the MSM that is)

Nice. Enquirer was the only rag to pursue the story because it involved a Rat. Shows how the MSM has abdicated its role as watchdog of our democracy in favor of becoming a tool of political spin.

No vetting of Obama was done by the MSM. The Rev. Wright story was blasted on Fox for days and days before it got a mention... And only to cover Obama’s carefully crafted excuse speech.

The National Enquirer would have had a small chance of winning had it changed its name to “Al Gore’s Green Gossip.” The award people LOVE him and his leftist enhanced reality propaganda.

I am surprised they didn’t give the Pulitzer to Obama for all the Harvard articles he would have written if he had not been so busy being awesome.

Given the gross distortions and outright lies in the major newspapers and TV stations, people have come to gaze with respect in those supermarket lines at the much better journalism of the Enquirer. Journalism schools were taken over, just like all the other opinion-making professional schools. The Enquirer reporters and their ilk are “old school” and quaint in doggedly seeking actual facts, a thorn in the side of the changemakers.

I’m sorry... does ANYONE here think the “real papers” are any more deserving of an award?

I am still waiting for the Enquirer to get to the bottom of the birth certificate issue.

They might be the only institute willing to find out the truth.
