SALT LAKE CITY Thanks to Mitt Romney, the head of the site selection team for the 2012 GOP National Convention said Tuesday she knows more about Salt Lake City than the other two cities competing to host the event: Tampa, Fla., and Phoenix.
(SNIP) Hughes dismissed concerns that Utah, headquarters of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, might be seen as alienating some Republicans. Romney, a Mormon, faced a backlash from conservatives in his party who did not believe he was a Christian.
"I heard that question when he was running for president, and I'm like, 'What is the big deal?' " she said.
When George Romney, also a Mormon, was governor of Michigan, "the sky did not fall down," Hughes said. Many on the site selection team were Romney supporters in the last election, she said"........

convention in utah....not a good idea...
The Azalea bushes are in full bloom in my yard,
and the Romneybots are in full bloom on FR.
I heard Romney had a lock on Utah? Wonder why?
“faced a backlash from conservatives in his party who did not believe he was a Christian.”
I don’t understand. I thought Mormon was a type of christian like Methodist or Catholic or Baptist. They still use the Bible right? They were leaders in getting that Gay marriage act defeated in California.
Why so much blue on blue in your guys social conservative camp?
I’ll be surprised if Steele doesn’t hold the convention in Hawaii.
The Mitt Romney Olympics? Do they have events like RINO riding, intellectual gymnastics, backstabbing, and responsibility dodging?
Not a good idea even though I would LOVE the convention to be held in my hometown.
If the truth about the Olympics scandal ever really comes out, you may find that the LDS Church played a major role not only in ‘saving’ the Olympics, but in creating the scandal in ORDER that they could forward Mitt to ‘save’ the games.
Machiavellian machinations at their finest. They don’t call it LDS Inc. for nothing!
The only reason Salt Lake would be chosen is because the fix is in... and the fix choice would be Romney.
Boost SLC and you boost MORMONism!
``You do have a wonderful city that can accommodate a bigger convention than we've ever had before,'' gushed RNC site selection committee chairman Holly Hughes, a Michigan resident who attended Florida State University and graduated from high school in Naples.
67% of the folks from there could tell you why!
I have learned for myself that Presbyterianism is not true.
17 It no sooner appeared than I found myself delivered from the enemy which held me bound. When the light rested upon me I saw two Personages, whose brightness and glory defy all description, standing above me in the air. One of them spake unto me, calling me by name and said, pointing to the otherThis is My Beloved Son. Hear Him!
18 My object in going to inquire of the Lord was to know which of all the sects was right, that I might know which to join. No sooner, therefore, did I get possession of myself, so as to be able to speak, than I asked the Personages who stood above me in the light, which of all the sects was right (for at this time it had never entered into my heart that all were wrong)and which I should join.
19 I was answered that I must join none of them, for they were all wrong; and the Personage who addressed me said that all their creeds were an abomination in his sight; that those professors were all corrupt; that: they draw near to me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me, they teach for doctrines the commandments of men, having a form of godliness, but they deny the power thereof.
20 He again forbade me to join with any of them; and many other things did he say unto me, which I cannot write at this time. When I came to myself again, I found myself lying on my back, looking up into heaven. When the light had departed, I had no strength; but soon recovering in some degree, I went home. And as I leaned up to the fireplace, mother inquired what the matter was. I replied, Never mind, all is wellI am well enough off. I then said to my mother,
Joseph Smith continues: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (fromPearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith-History 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).
Are you truly serious here?
The best way to get rid of Mitt is to have him lose in the primaries ............
Also, the Mittbots need to stop pushing him just because they have the same religious label that he has .....
I’m not a Christian, but I don’t really see how this is different from other churches who have broken off from earlier demonstrations. Catholics said the others were pagans heretics etc. then the protestants came and said the Catholics were corrupt and “whore of Babylon” then it was these guys turn.
In terms of real world political outcomes aren’t what Mormons and the rest of your movement want the same? No homosexual marriage, no abortions, public prayer etc.
Don’t mean to be flippant but I really didn’t know there was this much of a difference until primary season last year.
Do your own bird dogging and everyone won't know you are a liar or just an idiot . The case was throw out by the Federal Judge after the prosecution rested . NO CASE .
Propaganda. The MSM is pushing Mitt for the Repub candidate.
Joseph Smith continues: "for the teachers of religion of the different sects understood the same passages of scripture so differently as to destroy all confidence in settling the question by an appeal to the Bible" (from Pearl of Great Price, Joseph Smith-History 1:12). "What is it that inspires professors of Christianity generally with a hope of salvation? It is that smooth, sophisticated influence of the devil, by which he deceives the whole world" (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p.270).Questions put to Joseph Smith: "'Do you believe the Bible?[Smith:]'If we do, we are the only people under heaven that does, for there are none of the religious sects of the day that do'.When asked 'Will everybody be damned, but Mormons'?[Smith replied] 'Yes, and a great portion of them, unless they repent, and work righteousness." (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, p. 119).Brigham Young stated this repeatedly:"When the light came to me I saw that all the so-called Christian world was grovelling in darkness" (Journal of Discourses 5:73);"The Christian world, so-called, are heathens as to the knowledge of the salvation of God" (Journal of Discourses 8:171);"With a regard to true theology, a more ignorant people never lived than the present so-called Christian world" (Journal of Discourses 8:199);"And who is there that acknowledges [God's] hand? ...You may wander east, west, north, and south, and you cannot find it in any church or government on the earth, except the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p.24);"Should you ask why we differ from other Christians, as they are called, it is simply because they are not Christians as the New Testament defines Christianity" (Journal of Discourses 10:230).Orson Pratt proclaimed:"Both Catholics and Protestants are nothing less than the 'whore of Babylon' whom the Lord denounces by the mouth of John the Revelator as having corrupted all the earth by their fornications and wickedness. Any person who shall be so corrupt as to receive a holy ordinance of the Gospel from the ministers of any of these apostate churches will be sent down to hell with them, unless they repent" (The Seer, p. 255)."This great apostasy commenced about the close of the first century of the Christian era, and it has been waxing worse and worse from then until now" (Journal of Discourses, vol.18, p.44),"But as there has been no Christian Church on the earth for a great many centuries past, until the present century, the people have lost sight of the pattern that God has given according to which the Christian Church should be established, and they have denominated a great variety of people Christian Churches, because they profess to be ...But there has been a long apostasy, during which the nations have been cursed with apostate churches in great abundance" (Journal of Discourses, 18:172).President John Taylor stated:"Christianity...is a perfect pack of nonsense...the devil could not invent a better engine to spread his work than the Christianity of the nineteenth century." (Journal of Discourses, vol. 6, p.167);"Where shall we look for the true order or authority of God? It cannot be found in any nation of Christendom." (Journal of Discourses, 10:127).James Talmage said: "A self-suggesting interpretation of history indicates that there has been a great departure from the way of salvation as laid down by the Savior, a universal apostasy from the Church of Christ". (A Study of the Articles of Faith, p.182).President Joseph Fielding Smith said:"Doctrines were corrupted, authority lost, and a false order of religion took the place of the gospel of Jesus Christ, just as it had been the case in former dispensations, and the people were left in spiritual darkness." (Doctrines of Salvation, p.266)."For hundreds of years the world was wrapped in a veil of spiritual darkness, until there was not one fundamental truth belonging to the place of salvation ...Joseph Smith declared that in the year 1820 the Lord revealed to him that all the 'Christian' churches were in error, teaching for commandments the doctrines of men" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol. 3, p.282).More recent statements by apostle Bruce McConkie are also very clear:"Apostasy was universal...And this darkness still prevails except among those who have come to a knowledge of the restored gospel" (Doctrines of Salvation, vol 3, p.265);"Thus the signs of the times include the prevailing apostate darkness in the sects of Christendom and in the religious world in general" (The Millennial Messiah, p.403); "a perverted Christianity holds sway among the so-called Christians of apostate Christendom" (Mormon Doctrine, p.132);"virtually all the millions of apostate Christendom have abased themselves before the mythical throne of a mythical Christ whom they vainly suppose to be a spirit essence who is incorporeal uncreated, immaterial and three-in-one with the Father and Holy Spirit" (Mormon Doctrine, p.269);"Gnosticism is one of the great pagan philosophies which antedated Christ and the Christian Era and which was later commingled with pure Christianity to form the apostate religion that has prevailed in the world since the early days of that era." (Mormon Doctrine, p.316).President George Q. Cannon said: "After the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints was organized, there were only two churches upon the earth. They were known respectively as the Church of the Lamb of God and Babylon. The various organizations which are called churches throughout Christendom, though differing in their creeds and organizations, have one common origin. They all belong to Babylon" (Gospel Truth, p.324).President Wilford Woodruff stated:"the Gospel of modern Christendom shuts up the Lord, and stops all communication with Him. I want nothing to do with such a Gospel, I would rather prefer the Gospel of the dark ages, so called" (Journal of Discourses, vol. 2, p.196).
Yes. I understand the anger with Romney for being a moderate but never understood the Mormon thing. From what I can tell some people consider it a different faith entirely? Apparently some Mormons consider the other Christians heretics also?
Didn't he alREADY do this?
And yet; he's STILL hanging around!
Some FReepers use Mitt Romney articles as thinly veiled vehicles for sparking/rehashing religious debates about the LDS Church.
Politically speaking, Mormons are a very reliable conservative-voting group. But some foolishly love to attack their strong political allies over religious differences.
So true; if all you look at is THIS world.
Both groups have a LARGER veiw of things, and they are NOT the same.
You state you're not a Christian; can I assume that you've not really got any kind of religious preferences?
Dave and Tom didn't have a clue about what happened to them at the time. Dave was our landlord in Sugarhouse. He never blamed his religion for what they did to him. I had long talks in an attempt to help him understand...to no avail.
You are catching on... ;^)
While other Freepers use Romney as a chance to further their chosen religious organizations percentages in the world.
The set-up and the fall-guys, Dave and Tom. It's sad that they sacrificed themselves upon the LDS altar.
Well, it took "wild gymnastics" of passages from Revelation (re: "whore of Babylon") to come up with something. In other words, there is NO Scriptural passage that reads either: "Thus saith the Lord of the Catholics, Protestants by name are heretics" or "Thus saith the Lord of the Protestants, Catholics are the 'whore of Babylon.'"
The most that could be attributed was by insinuation or by accusation of a church leader or grassroots person. But the source of that was simply an opinion -- not necessarily God, and certainly not canonized revelation.
With the Mormons, that can't be said!!!
Why? Because Joseph Smith, in his very "first vision," claimed that...
...ALL of the Christian creeds were an "abomination" to not just Smith, but to th Mormon god...
...ALL of the Christian professors of their faith were "corrupt"...(again, not just an opinion of Smith, but of the Mormon god)...
...ALL of the non- "Lamb" churches (what Mormons interpret as non-Mormon churches) were under the umbrella of the "Church of Satan" (see Book of Mormon, 1 Nephi 14:9-10)...
Smith's "first vision" became enshrined by a later generation of Mormons (mid 1870s) when they decided this was to be "canonized revelation."
Furthermore, official Mormon doctrine considers themselves to be "the only true and living church on the face of the earth" (Doctrine & Covenants 1:30) and that all others were/are part of a "universal apostasy."
There are various Protestant and Evangelical beliefs re: Catholics and the Catholic faith. You would be hard-pressed to come up with a canonized Bible passage saying, "Thus saith the Lord: Catholics are..."
The answer is yes.
Not a good idea for the Romney Camp. But Utah is gorgeous and Salt Lake City has a beautiful downtown. The Red Rock Brewery and Squatters are most excellent Restaurant/Bars. They would be PACKED each night (but do great business now; it would just be even better biz, and they deserve it). Good for them.
And the light of truth would shine upon the mormon cult and on Romney. I'm really likin' the idea that we have the GOP Convention there. I'd visit Salt Lake again to toast to Sarah Palin (and hopefully Michele Bachmann and to Jindal, too).....
They do not believe in the Biblical Jesus of the Bible.
And that poses a unique problem. Last time I checked, the USA was comprised predominantly of Christians.
Could the GOP actually elect a non-Christian to the office of President?
(No. Methodists, Catholics or Baptists are not polytheists, nor do they believe they will become gods one day)
They still use the Bible right?
[Only when it's "correctly (and conveniently, IMA) translated" as they have seen fit...meanwhile, ignoring the rest.]
They were leaders in getting that Gay marriage act defeated in California.
Yes. The Mormons should continue to be complimented not only on Prop 8 from 2008, but Prop 22 in California in 2000 vote also defended marriage, and few people recognize the importance of Mormons contributing to that passing as well.
Why so much blue on blue in your guys social conservative camp?
Because Romney has waffled many, many times on abortion, treatment of embryos, protecting the workplace from becoming a "civil rights" nest for homosexuals, the homosexual agenda itself. Many other Mormon political leaders have similar political agendas, despite their Mormon ties (Harry Reid, for example...about 1/4 of the Lds congressman are Democrats).
Basically, I would contend that "waffle" is the byword among Mormons. It didn't originate with Romney. The Mormon god was...
...first against polygamy (Book of Mormon)
...then for it (Smith's lifestyle & he then sought to back it up with his own hand-made 'revelation' in Doctrine & Covenants 132)
...then they were against it starting in 1890
...then then they were still for it -- with their leaders solemnizing an additional 260+ plural marriages between 1890-1910...
...then they were against it, ex-communicating people in the 1930s...
...then they were for it, with a leading apostle (Bruce R. McConkie) saying the Mormons would re-institute it upon Jesus' return (see book, Mormon Doctrine by McConkie).
...in the interim, or at least people die and live as polygamists on another planet, they are against it.
Likewise, Lds were against blacks as priestholders in the church -- even while Romney was still age 30 -- and then they were for it.
Just stick around long enough. The Mormon politician, the Mormon god, and the Mormon "prophet" will change their mind yet once again. And if the Mormon "prophet" does, then the Mormon "politician" is pledged to go along with that per Ezra Taft Benson, former ag secretary of the Eisenhower admin & former Lds "prophet."
I personally don’t care if the GOPC is held in SLC.
If it being done to elevate Romney. Well, then it is a “Duh! What are you thinking?”.
Romney’s religion aside, I don’t find him appealing.
He had one moment, in his entire campaign, when he made sense and actually looked and felt like this was something he wanted.
For the rest of his campaign he was all to accommodating to his competitors and glad handed more than a few, as if there were some inside joke we weren’t privy to.
But, having the one speech, a concession speech, be your best pitch in the entire campaign?
You have got to be kidding. I liked the speech and particulars but that should been his act and message from the beginning.
Now what’s the difference in having the GOPC in SLC, NYC or even Vegas? None that I can see.
Just places and I look forward to hearing the GOPC plans but, my aprehension, based on their luke warm(if that at all) performance over the last 10 years, is they will have little substantive to say and a real apathy of commitment to do anything valuable for the rest of us.
So go ahead and have your little insider convention but, until you get a backbone, a vision and a fire in your belly, I will not support the GOP, in any way.
Lose Michael Steele. He is a disaster and I don’t care how much money he supposedly raised. The GOP would have likely raised that much anyway.
He has done nothing but attempt to line his pockets at the expense of GOP supporters and has no real record of accomplishment.
It is a stupid narrative. No one dismissed Romney as a credible candidate for some perceived error of his religion.
His lack of vision expressed with passion did himself in.
They are just making excuses for his loss.
He under performed. Period.
Your rant is better than mine.
Succinct and to the point.
My point was who cares , but you knew that . I think you and President Obama are brothers(and Sister?) and who cares ?
You have been busy. May I borrow that?
Under your Utopia of wishing people to hell for dissenting, who do you love the most that would also be on their way to hell.
BTW, don’t care about Romney’s religion. Guy is a warmed over beer and flat.
The Mormons consider themselves a seperate faith, completely.
I don’t have a problem with it, any more than I have other religions. Well except one. But not LDS
Yeah, that's what we want as the "face" of Republican conservatism...
...promotion of candidate who said 2.5 years ago that it's "OK" for parents to give up their embryonic children for "research" dissection...
...in a state where 95% of Mormons voted for this candidate...
...in the broader context of running vs. an African-American candidate in 2012...
...who, if he would have been old enough at the beginning of the calendar year when Romney turned 30...
...would not have been allowed to accompany said Romney into the Mormon temples in SLC...
...all because of skin color...
...Oh, sure that's the "face" we want for Republican conservatism [End Sarcasm]
[The MSM is already writing the articles & headlines for the 2011-2012 campaign...for some reason, most of them having to do with a referenda on racism]
Typical ad hominem...let me guess...you're Jehovah's Witness?
I don't know about the love part , but the person I am most familiar with , who is the most likely candidate for a seat in that hot place , if he doesn't change his ways , would be me .
LOL, me too! Touche’ and good humor.
You took that as an attack ? They only thing I know about Jehovahs Witnesses is that they were persecuted along with the jews by Nazis and they did not go in the Army with the rest of us , a lot like Mormons headed on their missions .
From a logical point of view, I’d say Mormonism grew into a legal entity...I wouldn’t really call it a religion...more like a “club”.
You didn’t read his post, did you?
