Looks like some kind of force from below did the damage.

Just speculating.

Well it looks to me like the damage is in the bow, not the stern. Can’t see anything wrong in the aft end unless it’s underneath and you can’t see it. Maybe the damage to the bow was done when it came to rest on the bottom.

My thoughts as well.

The bow got clobbered, but the stern is intact and in right good order.

The rear half of the ship broke away from the front half before hitting the bottom. The rear half went down fast while the front half was floating away for some time before finally going down and hitting the bottom some 4km from the site of explosion.

That’s the back half of a destroyer, my guess is was struck by a rather large explosion at midships broke in half and sunk.

Sir, the bow isn’t even there. Only the rear portion of the ship is in the photo.

The photos and the news reports don’t jive.

All the ones I read said the stern was destroyed.

Holy Crap!

Now I see why they say the stern was salvaged, as that’s all that’s left!

WOWZERS!

That was an initial report. As more details came out, it became clear that the damage was done closer to the center.

I say torpedo.

The hull was split in two at precisely the same point most modern armament home in on to detonate, below the keel at the midpoint of the craft.

A majority of military experts in SK are voicing the same opinion.

When yesterday's report referred to a hole where "a chimney" (stack) was missing, I knew that the blast had been nearly amidships.

From comparing the damage with photos of the complete ship, I would say that the blast point was no farther astern than the 65% / 35% fore / aft location -- and maybe even 60% / 40% fore/ aft...

And, estimating ffom the appearance of the visible part of the along-the-keel length of the hole in the bottom, the blast could have been as far forward as 55% / 45%. You'd need to look at both halves to pin it down closer than that.

For sure, there is far more blast damage (a bigger explosion?) than on the Cole -- and, beamwise, the blast point was nearly beneath the keel.

I would tend to agree. Something big broke her back amidships.

I think Occam’s Razor applies quite well to this one.

Yikes, that's just one half? You know, I kinda thought the ship looked a bit small. Thanks.
