Recalling 95 Bombing, Clinton Sees Parallels By CARL HULSE
WASHINGTON With the 15th anniversary of the Oklahoma City bombing approaching, former President Bill Clinton on Thursday drew parallels between the antigovernment tone that preceded that devastating attack and the political tumult of today, saying government critics must be mindful that angry words can stir violent actions.
In advance of a symposium on Friday about the attack on the Oklahoma City federal building and its current relevance, Mr. Clinton, who was in his first term at the time of the bombing, warned that attempts to incite opposition by demonizing the government can provoke responses beyond what political figures intend.
There can be real consequences when what you say animates people who do things you would never do, Mr. Clinton said in an interview, saying that Timothy McVeigh, who carried out the Oklahoma City bombing, and those who assisted him, were profoundly alienated, disconnected people who bought into this militant antigovernment line.
The former president said the potential for stirring a violent response might be even greater now with the reach of the Internet and other common ways of communication that did not exist on April 19, 1995, when the building was struck.
Because of the Internet, there is this vast echo chamber and our advocacy reaches into corners that never would have been possible before, said Mr. Clinton, who said political messages are now able to reach those who are both serious and seriously disturbed. He will be delivering the keynote address Friday at an event about the Oklahoma City attack being sponsored by the Center for American Progress Action Fund and the Democratic Leadership Council.

If youll recall, in 1996, he used the OKC bombing to run a successful smear campaign against his critics on talk radio all the way to re-election.
He was headed to a one term presidency until that happened.
The Republican takeover of House and Sentate came in 1994 because of a backlash nationwide to the behind closed doors unelected co-presidency of Hillary Clinton ramming through Socialized Medicine.
Tom Brokaw (or was it Peter Jennings) declared that America threw a temper tantrum when the Democrats lost both the House and Senate.
We are still dealing with the same media, the same long term goals, and the same partisan smears.
You want to talk McCarthyism and bogus hysteria? The smears by Democats are never critized as extremist and false rhetoric in our textbooks or media.
Wow. Who knew there were tea parties in 1995?
Oh please Slick.....Time for another bypass apparently.
The Justice Department never did bother to learn what motivated McVeigh’s partner John Doe number two.
Yeah. A vocal cord bypass.
The only bomb the Tea Party has is set to go off in the Nov. elections ,,, and that’s really why they are SSSOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO nervous and scared . You Betcha!!!
He’s an extraordinarily good liar. I forgot who said that, but whoever it was spoke the truth.
Thanks for that - I was going to post a few words about what angered McVeigh but you did it much better!!!!! Sure doesn’t hurt to remind everyone.
He’s am idiot. Just trying to discredit and disrupt.
I would think that someone would draw parallels between a tone deaf ruling class, and citizens inability to be heard. There is a tremendous release of pressure when and if concerns are listened to and met. What would blacks have done if after marching with MLK, and the govt at the federal level completely ignored them? I know what they did when they were the center of attention by the govt, a pretty large group became violent. That group now is considered mainstream of a sort....the Black Panthers baby. Power to the people, black power, kill whitey. Now THAT is an example of a message that is non-violent when seen from todays POV?
I am so sorry that bill clinton is still blind.
“”Hes an extraordinarily good liar. I forgot who said that, but whoever it was spoke the truth.””
Bob Kerry - Senator from NE.... A democrat but he got it right as far as that statement was concerned.
They knew but to prosecute would take the onus off of the “White, Christian, Right Wing Militias”.
