Then the question struck me why it is that a six-month-old baby can exhibit the time-honored trait of self-reliance, whereas thousands of ostensible adults in New Orleans, Louisiana, apparently could not?

Because no one told the baby that he can’t do it. The people of NO have 40 years of being told that the gummint is their only hope and that they shouldn’t even try.
Interestingly enough, during the early Katrina coverage, TV interviewed people who had just walked through blocks of water until they hit high ground & came out. I always wondered what might be the different circumstances between these people & the ones who went into the dome.
The custodian force is 100 percent black. I'm not mentioning this from a racist viewpoint, but how does that happen? PS, these folks are well paid.

And, that welfare discouraged intact households back then by reducing the payment if there was a father in the house. And that single parenthood is an increasing problem in other ethnic groups, but a smaller one.
My brother’s response - How dare I say that (let’s not get confused by the truth, dontcha know) and I’m one of them there racists.

To top it ll off, they are FEDERAL GOVERNMENT WORKERS meaning they have a pension, benefits, and other perks 90% of us will not get upon retiring... but they will.
That’s another part of the problem right there - the absolute unwillingness of many in this country to have any sort of even-handed, factual discussion about racial matters that doesn’t end in some accusation of “racism” flying around.
He may wake or he may not.
Mine did.
