Ice cap thaw may awaken Icelandic volcanoes
Reuters ^ | April, 16, 2010 | Alister Doyle

OSLO (Reuters) – A thaw of Iceland's ice caps in coming decades caused by climate change may trigger more volcanic eruptions by removing a vast weight and freeing magma from deep below ground, scientists said on Friday.

“It would be a lot cheaper to throw scientists into volcanoes.”

First we have to pay their way to get to the Rim of the Volcano, so we can watch a potential accident.

Temperature of magmas is difficult to measure (due to the danger involved), but laboratory measurement and limited field observation indicate that the eruption temperature of various magmas is as follows:

* Basaltic magma - 1000 to 1200oC
* Andesitic magma - 800 to 1000oC
* Rhyolitic magma - 650 to 800oC.

Silly you! The floating ice is pressing down on the water, holding the magma in. If the ice is gone, the volcanoes will erupt!! QED.

So the ice is the only thing holding back the water. If the ice is gone the water will explode out of the depths and flood the land.......putting out the volcanoes. LOL

I believe the weight of the snow is minuscule to the power of a hot headed volcano!

The fact that the volcano is erupting proves that, however, the weight of the ice and snow is not insignifcant. It is enough to cause 'extra' pressure to have to build up before it can erupt, and once it's thrown the ice and snow away it can really blow.

Where the hell have you been? Al Gore, winner of the Nobel Prize, has told us that the Earth's core is "MILLIONS of Degrees."

Try and keep up with Science, willya. In fact, I have just received a $14 Billion Stimulus Grant to put like these really big freezers on that nasty Mt. St.Helen volcano. Okey dokey.
So basically SUV’s in Iowa are melting more ice in Iceland than are gushing volcanoes directly under that ice.

Got it.

The greater part of the ice on top of Iceland disappeared for the most part about 13,000 years ago. The amount that's been there since has been a quite modest percentage.

Actually, wouldn’t the greater amounts of ice increase the pressure of the magma and lead to bigger eruptions?

There is some truth to what they are saying but it is counterbalanced by factual inaccuracies in their claims. Here's why: overburden does in fact cap magma, specifically it keeps dissolved gasses in solution. Mount St. Helens is a prime example of an earthquake causing a landslide which relieved overburden which caused dissolved gasses to "boil out" resulting in a massive volcanic explosion. Problem is, icelandic vulcanism is from a mid-oceanic ridge and is therefore basaltic. Basaltic magmas are MUCH less viscous (e.g. more fluid) than the continental rhyolite/dacite composition of Mount St. Helens, which is more like gas charged toothpaste, and therefore exsolved gasses are not explosively released but rather gently vented. So they've jumbled some science in with some misconceptions and packaged it up as some sort of scientific mumbo-jumbo which in the final analysis ain't worth squat.

It’s silly theory. But consider what it would mean for the AGW theory were it true: it would mean they left out a massive negative feedback mechanism in all their computer models that purport to show catastrophic warming.

Well if that happens Global Warming is done for - since these same scientists admit that vulcanic activity in the past has actually helped cool the earth’s atmosphere, significantly increased activity in the future would lead to much more cooling, thus putting a brake on warming - a pretty neat auto-correction mechanism - thanks, Mother Nature.....

What a maroon! Everyone knows that the ice and snow cause the magma to generate more pressure resulting
in a bigger explosion when it finally does blow! By melting off some excess ice
we are reducing the blast pressure.

See how easy it is to manufacture science!
