Manufacturing is the heart of wealth creation for any country and we have been exporting various manufacturing industries from the USA for decades. Where did our shoe industry go? Watches? Toys?

When I look at the things I purchase on an everyday basis including food it seems about 80 percent or more of it comes from another country.

Is this guy also the author of Alice in Wonderland???

Spend a day shopping and read the labels and anyone will see that manufacturing in general has left the US...

IMO, it wasn’t the Baby Boomers. It was really a relatively few people in Washington, D.C. who slowly implemented plans to undermine our economy.

When you flood the economic system with bad paper, there are going to be major negative ramifications. Normally, people would simply acknowledge the error and fix it.

Today we have people in place who want to destroy our Capitalist system. And so they not only don’t fix it, they try to destroy anything that would contribute to keeping us viable in the future.

Obama is destroying Wall Street. He is destroying our banking system.

Normal folks just aren’t capable of grasping the level of deceit and evil taking place here.

Truly evil people recognize in the public the inability to conceptualize that people would purposefully try to destroy their nation. They are far too trusting. They are far too willing to join in the denial of what is taking place.

It’s paying off big-time for the lefties right now.

I don’t so much see this as generational, as the cunning execution of a grand plan by evil people the likes of which this old world has seldom seen.

This story is a joke and a very poor one at that.

What do we make in this country?
I missed that part.
Where do we make?
Damn, I missed that part, also.

Here is the largest employer in Montana...THE GOVERNMENT!!!

BOZEMAN – Government is now the largest employment sector in the state.
Government surpassed the Trade, Transportation, and Utilities category in final January numbers, according to statistics on hours and earnings from the U.S. Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Obviously, the baby boomers did a major number on our economy - can we reverse the damage they caused over the last 45-50 years.

Those boomers are pretty powerful in your mind, since here in the year 2010 boomers are only 46 to 64 years of age. Twenty years ago they would have been 26 years old to 44, still hardly running the United States.

It would be nice if the author included a list of all the things made in the USA that could be bought in your local mall.

Not many consumer goods sold in malls are made in the US anymore -- it's true. But cars, boats, airplanes, machine tools, construction equipment, industrial gases, iron ore, oil, natural gas, steel, aluminum and food are. Just to name a few.

I’ve noticed that the trend to outsource human contacts to India may be turning around. Companies I’ve worked with that did that in the past brought the Customer Service jobs back to the US. Reason? The language barrier is driving customers away. It’s not racist or jingoistic, it’s that the Indian accent is very, very difficult for most Americans to understand. I’ve had to resort to abandoning the telephone for written communication to fix my issue.

Of all he countries in the world, India is probably the worst place to outsource this kind of work.

Industry Week's top 20 US Manufacturers (Ranked by Revenue)
(The USA still produces a lot of actual Goods; but Oil & Coal are definitely the anchors, along with Computers)

Of the top 20 US Manufacturers, "Oil & Coal" and "Computers" make up literally HALF of the entire list.

See my #31.

Looks like the major American manufacturers primarily account for the gasoline you put in your car, as you drive to the electronics store to buy a new computer with which to surf Free Republic.

Together, those two sectors make up half the list of the top 20 US Manufacturers.

Not taking a particular economic/political position at this time (okay, well -- I'm anti-Protectionism, but think that the US Economy does need lower taxes and less-onerous regulation to compete most effectively); just providing some data for the discussion, if anyone's interested.

More Liberal Globalist spin....if the USA still manufactures so much, as this author claims....why can’t we find “Made in America” anywhere?

Heck we even import FOOD now.....

And, in monetary amounts, $$$, Germany, in most years, surpasses the US overall in manufacturing.....and is way ahead per capita....doing so with 80 million people and 140,000 square miles of land....

Liberal Globalists need to stop spinning, stop lying....until the USA reverts to a manufacturing power...complete with tariffs....it is not going to lead in manufacturing. Reality is....that when the USA had strong tariffs.....it became the global leader in manufacturing and economy

Interesting list....but most of the materials, and components used, are made overseas....whether it is the foreign oil or computer parts.

Those things need to return to the USA....we need to be making the component parts and raw materials again

Basics aren’t made here in any quantity. Things like:

Cooking ware.

Fabrics.

Thread.

Clothing.

Blankets, sheets and towels.

Slippers.

Shoes.

Household utensils.

Tools.

Furniture.

Vitamins.

I realize some of the above are manufactured here but in small quantity, and/or some components are made elsewhere.

When I was a kid, all of the above were made in the USA.

It WAS the baby boomers who sold themselves and their fellow Americans down the river to save a few bucks with a foreign car and/or stereo - the countdown began about 1960.

“When I was a kid, all of the above were made in the USA.”

The question you (and everyone) need to ask yourself is: why didn’t you continue to buy those made in the USA products like your parents did?

Because I have no freaking choice in the matter.

Actually I buy only US made stuff as far as possible, EU or South American second choice.

My DH tries to buy all USA tools, goes to auctions and garage sales to get old ones and fixes ‘em.

If no choice is offered, you certainly cannot blame me that practically no useful stuff is made in the US anymore. I go out of my way to visit “Made in the USA” sites - I ordered Fuller Brush products for cleaning type brushes since all the junk in the stores is made in China. You have no idea how much trouble I go to, to avoid toxic crap made in China. What to speak of their slave labor and enviornmental destruction; and I have no desire to send money to a hateful tyranny who represses its own people and means harm to other countries.

Not just you, every American. Look at how many of your neighbors have driven around in Toyotas and Hondas and Volkswagens, not even blinking as manufacturing was being shut down all around them. As I said, they sold out to save a couple of bucks and a lot of them are proud of it.

When most everyone around screws up, the ones who don’t still suffer. It’s unavoidable. A lot of people are waking up to the fact that manufacturing needs to be brought back to the US. It’s only going to increase.
