I’ll defend the right of Yemenis to chew qat but I won’t defend the right of americans to do drugs: smoke pot,do cocaine,ectasy,meow-meow,etc.

like i said before chewing qat is indigenous to their culture.

My point was that chewing qat on this scale was never indigenous to their culture and it’s not good for it. It wasn’t a good thing for the elites, either, including the sacred descendants of Mohammed, but it wasn’t dragging down the rest of the country the way it is now. And I have heard from people who have spent time in certain parts of the ME that it is a problem, to the extent that you have to figure out the brief moment when the person isn’t stoned if you want him to do anything.

And in any case, even if something is indigenous to a culture, that doesn’t make it right.

Child marriage? Human sacrifice? Indigenous? Oh, okay.

I don’t think so!

i think there are bigger problems to worry about than the amount of qat Yemenis chew
