Liberals are all too often eager to charge conservative personalities of using hyperbole to gain a political advantage, especially when it contradicts their world view - whether it's suggesting the Obama administration is taking the country down the path of socialism, fascism or any other -ism.
However, it could be argued there's a different set of standards for those same people when they want to make strong charges. On NBC's April 18 "The Chris Matthews Show," Time columnist Joe Klein all but accused former GOP vice-presidential nominee and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, along with Fox News host Glenn Beck of sedition.
"I did a little bit of research just before this show - it's on this little napkin here. I looked up the definition of sedition which is conduct or language inciting rebellion against the authority of the state. And a lot of these statements, especially the ones coming from people like Glenn Beck and to a certain extent Sarah Palin, rub right up close to being seditious."

As Klein pointed out, the legal definition of sedition is "a revolt or an incitement to revolt against established authority." And, sedition has been declared a felony in Supreme Court opinions, thus making Klein's national television accusation a fairly serious one, one of which New York magazine's John Heilemann agreed with. However, Heilemann added conservative talker Rush Limbaugh to that list.
"And Joe's right and I'll name another person, I'll name Rush Limbaugh who uses this phrase constantly and talks about the Obama administration as a regime," Heilemann said. "That phrase which has connotations of tyranny. And what's so interesting about it to me, to get to Norah's point - what is the focus, what is the cause of this? You think back to 1994, there was Ruby Ridge. There was Waco. There were triggering incidents. There's been nothing like that. The only thing that's changed in the last 15 months is the election of Barack Obama. And as far as I can see, in terms of the policies that Obama has implemented, there's nothing."
Heilemann also suggested that the alleged up tick in militia activity is a result of the Obama presidency. Klein said it was not only the Obama presidency, but that he was "African-American," and had "Hussein" as a middle name, along with the "scary" economic crisis.
"Two are two things going on here and one thing is certainly that," Klein said. "One thing is he is African-American, but that his name is Barack Hussein Obama. The other we've had a very scary economic crisis. And when people get scared, they get defensive and they get a little crazy."

Amazing how quick these liberal shills forgot what went on under Bush. They lionized the likes of Cindy Sheehan and Michael Moore who arguably could be accused of committing sedition, but now suddenly when a Democrat is in office political free speech is to be silenced? What about others who in a time of war emboldened our enemies by demanding the US retreat from Iraq, or worse saying the US had already been defeated there (Harry Reid), or accusing the president of lying to get us into a war? Talk about REAL sedition. But no, Joe Klein and the other media hypocrites reveled in this kind of irresponsible rhetoric which likely cost many US lives in Iraq by emboldening our enemies with the idea the more US blood they spilled the more they could gin up US political opposition to the war and potentially force the US into humiliating defeat. If that aid and comfort Michael Moore, Cindy Sheehan, most of the Democratic Congressional Caucus and yes---Joe Klein and other members of the media echo chamber---gave to Al Qaeda during the height of the Iraq War and the War on Terror was not sedition, then I don't know what is. But that's all this Stalinistic rant by Klein accusing the right of "sedition" over DOMESTIC POLICIES MIND YOU (not a war or national security) is about---projection of their own sins in the Bush years onto others.
But what those on the right are doing in SUBSTANTIVELY and RATIONALLY calling attention to the destructiveness and lies in Obama's DOMESTIC policies is now somehow a threat to the nation? None of these personalities on the right have called for violence and very little's been committed---certainly compared to Jindal's aide being mauled by some lefty nut or Eric Cantor's office being shot up, incidents the media largely ignored. Meanwhile Klein and other neo-Stalinists continue to employ Obama's Alinskyite Chicago street punk intimidation campaign to de-legitimize Obama's political opposition in citing unproven allegations of racist remarks and threats against Democrats--with all of one tape so far produced to even back up such threat claims and NOTHING produced to prove what is alleged to have been said against John Lewis. And all the while the media ignores that there are at least 2 proven threats made against Republicans on tape--Eric Cantor and Jean Schmidt of Ohio not to mention the threats actually carried out that I mentioned already. Yet the clown car media ignores the fact the Congressional Sargeant at Arms says there's been no uptick in threats of violence against Congressmen during the healthcare debate. Again, this was all cooked up in a political Reichstag burning to sully and silence legitimate dissent.
But it's time someone with a national voice and credibility on both sides of the aisle stood up and said to the likes of Joe Klein what liberals so love in what was said to Joe McCarthy "Sirs...have you no shame?"
Do they REALLY want to go there? Let’s do a quick search on Google of how many times prominent libs used the phrase “Bush regime.”
I expect Holder to be indicting some people soon. Free Speech is not tolerable in a Communist country. They are laying the groundwork now.
I remember, not too long ago, when Klein and his ilk said dissent was a patriotic duty — and to question the patriotism of a dissenter was entirely out-of-bounds.
Perhaps our patriotic duty to dissent only applies when we dissent against conservatives, Christians or the military.

“Time” to send this to Klein...!

Klein may have forgotten Hillarys view on the subject....
Accusations of sedition against people calling for Constitutional limits on governmental power is...
...in fact,
REAL sedition.
Klein can add my name to his list.
You have to be f’n kidding me. After they said about the troops and Bush. These people are nothing but thugs. Just makes you want to screem it louder
he should have spent more time writing on the bar napkin and less time drinking from the glass that came on it.
vaudine
Communists like Klien are absurd. What are they gonna do arrest all the Taxpayers? Where would they get any money? Health Care is going to cause Doctors Offices to cut back on expenses. That is the only place I ever see Time anymore. Guess they will be needing an Obama Bail Out.
“If this be treason, then make the most of it...”
I’m ready for what’s coming.
Klein is a loser who can only dream of the success achieved by Rush Limbaugh, Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin.
Jealousy is an ugly thing, and so is Joe Klein.
I wonder if Mr. Heilemann made the same comments about the Left when they referred to the previous Administration as the "Bush Regime"?
< crickets>
So... when are they gonna have the balls to arrest Beck or Palin on these charges?
Go ahead, let’s get this party started.
The 2nd amendment makes sedition against tyranny and revolution legal..
‘Both the Espionage Act and the Sedition Act were repealed in 1921.’
put what Pinch Sulzberger and the boys do is within the finest traditions of American Journalism? Just GAG me!!!!
Klein needs to get air-conditioning in his house. This is what happens when you spend more than a few hours in DC heat without a/c.
(Backstory: Klein built a big fancy house with his royalties from Primary Colors and made a point to have no A/c because he’s such a committed envirowacko).
Duh, a-hole, that's the POINT.
That smell you are smelling is the smell of fear combined with urine from the leftist undies.
They are truly beginning to panic, as well they should.
The Trilogy of Terror: Obama, Reid and Pelosi.
Let's throw in ALL the zerobot czars.
How about anyone who voted AYE on Obamacare.
Hmmmmm . . .so many traitors, too small of a space.
Real treason by Democrats all during the Iraq war is ignored or justifed as "Freedom of Expression" by the Junk Media clown posse.
Now that same clown posse wants to redefine anyone speaking ill of their "Dear Reader" a traitor.
on the plus side, you can really smell the fear when inside-the-beltway types who are as plugged-in as Klein start racheting the rhetoric up to this level
Another year goes by, and we still find Time not worthy of spending our money on a subscription. In that vein, your Mr. Klein seems to spend more time trying to make news by attacking conservatives, than he does reporting news. In short, he is a promoter and nothing more.
Time (your magazine) has left the mainstream views of America, and it shows in the falling readership. In short, you are bubble people that think America is molded in your image. In reality, each year your people move further left and so much further out of the mainstream. In short, you have earned the disgust of so many Americans. Funny how you think we are the minority, when in reality it is liberals like you that are the worthless shreds or human debris.
The attempt to make us as bad as the violent left is perhaps one of your last best efforts at irrelevance.
Or overlooked, or even approved, of Bill Ayers actions.
All those violent, hate filled left wing protesters of George Bush sure do fit that description. Maybe they could get some tapes to identify the crimnminals and lock them up before they have a chance to leave the country.
We know the Tea Partiers are safe. They have a Constitutional right to peacefully protest.
>>...and to a certain extent Sarah Palin, rub right up close to being seditious.” <<
So do I. However, close only counts in Horseshoes and hand grenades. That’s the point. Going 50 in a 50 mph zone rubs close to speeding. But it ain’t speeding.

But that was dissent not sedition dontchaknow.
Why is this treasonous witch still walking around?
These people (leftists) are disgusting!
Lol! Klein is getting the Vapors!
Obama's little Goebbels needs to consider definitions carefully before he goes there. Obama has steadfastly refused to prove that he is a lawful authority, eligible for the office that he has taken, and in the absence of such proof, keeping a careful watch over the usurper is patriotic.
“Results 1 - 10 of about 1,420,000 for bush regime.”
‘nuff said.
If President Bush had supporters protesting & marching against the treachery displayed in your graphic - it would have created civil unrest unlike anything we have witnessed since Ohio State.
While most of W’s supporters were working to pay taxes - his detractors had student loans or union per diem.
Wait a second now, isn’t dissent patriotic?
Laws governing sedition were struck down in 1921. Sedition is “Free Speech” and afforded first amendment protection.
Palin and Beck have not done anything illegal.
Pity we have no one today can turn a phrase like Patrick Henry.
Beyond demonization, you can bet liberals are desperately searching for an excuse for outright legal and violent oppression of conservative speech.
Ayers declared war on the USA. i guess that doesn’t count.
Tretious, seditious, lower than life, leftist scum that needs to be purged from OUR country and sent to a country they really admire like Venezuela, Russia or, my preference,Sudan - I don't know why - I just think life there would be what they deserved.
Oh, most certainly.
Most leftists get a virtual woody thinking about using the
power of the state to punish, incarcerate, and KILL their
ideological opponents.
This tendency comes from their ideological father (John 8:44).
Democrats committing treason against US Government.

You mean all those Hollywood types who dreamed about Bush's assassination? I'm sure that Eric Holder will be even-handed in his prosecutions. (/sarcasm)
I’m at DEFCON 4 and holding. I’m never less than five minutes to take it to DEFCON 5 and roll, anytime, anywhere. That’s the value of an at-hand 72 hour high mobility combat kit.
