Sen. Collins pledges to block Democratic Wall Street bill By Alexander Bolton - 04/19/10 04:19 PM ET

Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) announced after meeting with Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner on Monday that she will vote to filibuster a Democratic Wall Street reform bill.

Her announcement hurts Democratic chances of moving financial reform legislation through the Senate this week.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid (D-Nev.) said last week that he planned to bring the legislation to the floor this week, but Collins’s stance means that Democrats will likely not have the 60 votes needed to begin floor debate.

Collins said she and Geithner found common ground on many areas of financial regulatory reform and urged Democrats to spend several more weeks negotiating the measure. RELATED ARTICLES

Collins said it was unlikely that her concerns could be addressed within the next few days so that Reid could stick to his schedule.

“I see no reason why a bipartisan bill could not be put together over the next few weeks,” Collins said.

Collins said she told Geithner of her belief “that we can work out a truly bipartisan bill that will strengthen our financial system.”

Yeah, but I’m sure they’ll pull another RINO along with them.

Brown seems like a good possibility.

I’m sure there is going to be one RINO that will give the Dims a “reach-around” at the worst possible moment...

We can only hope.

196 days to November 2.

And about 60 days after that, the new Congress convenes.

I worry more about those 60 days.

Brown seems like a good possibility.

Brown said on Face the Nation yesterday he is 100% against this bill and would not support even a cloture vote to bring it to the floor. Last reports I heard are that ALL Senate Republicans are opposing. Let's not get so down on Brown just because being from Massachusetts he's not been able to vote 1000% with the party.

Nope stick em with a fork. They are done. The Crats have had it. They are reduced to whining about the Tea Party. Never have so few done so much for so many.

Collins and Brown both announced that they would support a filibuster, today. I think Obama’s “dare” to republicans to oppose the bill may have backfired on him. Even RINO’s like Collins and Brown get turned of by his arrogance.

What is so bad about this bill?

Granted its coming from obama and the dem commies so I assume its a disaster, but what specifically is wrong with it? I have not paid too much attention to this thing and would like some bullet points for when my facebook “friends” attack.

Thanks freepers.

That is like such yesterdays rules, get with the new dictator's program already.

Susan Collins wakes up every morning fantasizing about voting with the Dems. If you're Obama and you can't get her to vote with you, you're to the left of Bernie Sanders.

Of course it's early, and Collins seldom misses an opportunity to stab the GOP in the back, but this is a good sign.

As long as the bill contains unlimited bailouts the GOP is in a strong position to filibuster. This issue will be a negative for the Dems, not the GOP.

No more bailouts for banks, businesses or Fannie & Freddie.

Separate issues, but while we are at it...no pension bailouts for businesses or states that go bankrupt. Require companies to be fully funded in pensions each year. The taxpayers do not want to be on the hook for union pension.

If you can believe McConnell, the Reps will stand together and block the bill.

For Collins to threaten a fillibuster it must really be a stinky diaper.

The bill gives obumber unlimited authority to do to any company what he did to GM if he feels they are a threat to the economy.
