It may be too late to stop Iran developing a nuclear weapon, a former senior US defence official has warned.
The official, who has long experience with several US administrations, said President Obama had waited too long to take tough action against Tehran.
Fifteen months into his administration, Iran has faced no significant consequences for continuing with its uranium-enrichment programme, despite two deadlines set by Obama, which came and went without anything happening, the former official, who was speaking on condition of anonymity, told The Times. Now it may be too late to stop Iran from becoming nuclear-capable.
He said that the wrong signals had been sent to Tehran. First, there was talk of crippling sanctions, then they would be biting, and now we dont know how tough theyre going to be. It depends on the level of support given by Russia and China but neither is expected to back measures against Irans energy sector.
He outlined one nightmare scenario, in which Iran developed a nuclear weapon and passed it on to Hezbollah, which it sponsors and which has an artillery and missile inventory larger than many countries in the region.
Underlining the gloomy prognosis of Irans progress towards becoming a nuclear-weapon state, Tehran announced yesterday that work would begin on a new enrichment plant part of a significant expansion of the programme. President Ahmadinejad had approved the designated location of a new nuclear site, an Iranian official said.

But not too late to make them wish they hadn’t.
Why? Are all our missiles broken?
I think you know as well as I that this President won’t do a dam thing. He’s got the spine of a worm.........let alone being a muslim lover. He’ll get us in a war sure as hell.
“Hell get us in a war sure as hell.”
His incompetence will get us in so deep we’ll no option. It’s the Chamberlain Syndrome.
I’m not so sure Zero isn’t subsidizing the damned thing... just to be fair and “ spread it around “
I still can’t get over the fact that so many countries are trying their best to get to where we were 65 years ago.
With a traditional CIC.....It’s never too late.
With this one....it is every man....woman and child, for themselves.
God, help us.
“Hes got the spine of a worm.........let alone being a muslim lover. Hell get us in a war sure as hell.”
Yeah, but whose side will he be on?
Gee, ya think? This is something we’ve known all along,
it didn’t take a rocket scientist to figure it out.
Exactly what Bammy wanted.
Casualties in the eighties Iraq/Iran war were over a million. Iran has stated it is acceptable to lose hundreds of thousands in nuclear exhanges if the West and Israel disappear from the ME. Surely a million are not out of the question? If the Iranians think they can win, they might start something themselves when they have a deliverable number of weapons.
And, our “intelligence” must be considered so unreliable. It is commonly thought that ISraeli intelligence is better and more up to date than US intelligence, and we only know what the Israelis are telling us....are they still sharing their intelligence with us? We certainly spy on Israel...that huge basement complex below the US Embassy in Tel Aviv if full of CIA operatives. Can the Israelis hide secrets from us? US guys on the street can only wonder and watch.
Yes, and the Jordanians no doubt share gathering and funding of intelligence to a degree with the rest of the Arab League, especially the Saudis. The US must be really confused with its multiplicity of sources and politically correct internal filters.
The Iranians or the Israelis make the ultimate decisions.
Iran will get its Nuke and we won’t do anything about it, other than weak sanctions.
In just a few years, nukes will be as plentiful as oil in the Middle East. And a short time after that, there won’t be a Middle East anymore.
