Sticking to His Guns: Sedition Charges and the Journalistic Ethics of Time’s Joe Klein
Newsbusters ^ | April 19, 2010 | Jeff Poor

Posted on 04/19/2010 9:19:43 PM PDT by Rufus2007

One of the things taught in journalism schools, at least when it comes crime reporting, is that when someone charged with a crime, you carefully craft your rhetoric because in the United States, you're presumed innocent until proven guilty.

But what if you're journalist and you're making accusations of crime where there's not even a charge? On NBC's April 18 "The Chris Matthews Show," Time magazine's Joe Klein accused former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and Fox News host Glenn Beck of rubbing "right up close to being seditious," which according to the U.S. Code is rubbing right up close to being a crime. And even after the fact, Klein has stuck to his guns and didn't back down from that accusation.

"On the Chris Mathews Show Sunday, I said that some of the right-wing infotainment gasbags--people like Glenn Beck etc.--were nudging up close to the edge of sedition," Klein wrote in an April 19 post on Time.com's Swampland blog. "This has caused a bit of a self-righteous ruckus on the right. Let me be clear: dissent isn't sedition. Questioning an Administration's policies isn't sedition. But questioning an Administration's legitimacy in a manner intended to undermine or overthrow it certainly is."

Not satisfied with the government taking over the financial and health care industries and converting us from capitalism to socialism in the bargain, the left now wants to use heavy handed government power to silence all dissent.

I am so tired of hearing all of these so-called journalists adopting Obama’s phrase: “Let me be clear...”

So can we just all stipulate that from this point forward that anybody and everybody who wishes to be clear is totally free to be clear and does not need to say, “LET ME be clear.” Go ahead y’all...be clear, we will let you!

Joe Klein is not a reporter. He's been a Democrat propagandist for many years now. As such, he should not be held to ethical standards of real journalists. This should be in your hosts file:

Every article I’ve read by Klein has some type of slime in it. By the way “klein” in German means small, what a coincidence!

Unless, of course, the regime actually is illegitimate or a usurpation.

Rush’s use of the term Regime is very effective. It has the dems reeling and hauling out their BIG GUNS, or so they think. What a pathetic loser Bill Clinton is. Slick is in way over his head on this one.

Sedition? The allegations are simply a measure of how true and effective the statements of regime are. Hell, regime is mild, I call it the Obama Junta.

I mean rememer the New Yourk timmes leaking informatuion whch endangerd the lives of our troops in Iraq. That was sedition and the dems loved doing it.

Statements of truth are not seditious.

Joe Klein thinks he's dealing with a bunch of idiots. I've got news for jackass. When you define the terms of the debate, as he so clearly does above, then you become subject to the same rules. Never define, what you can not possibly support, and something tells me his indictment lies within the pages of his own magazine.

There seems to be no end to the circus of fools since Odumbo has taken office...

The word “overthrow” inherently implies violence. Even the birthers are seeking LEGAL means to remove Obama from the presidency (or prevent a 2012 run).

Klein has been off his rocker for years.

Joe Klein calls American's "dumb", yet he's in an industry that is supposed to keep Americans informed about what goes on in DC by being the government watchdog. Instead, he would rather be it's lapdog.

Correct!

When asked directly (i.e., no ambiguity such as "is is") on numerous ocassions, if he - Joe Klein - wrote "Primary Colors: A Novel of Politics" published in 1996 having as its author Anonymous, his reply was always "No."

Klein, as do many dim-0-crat supporters, having shown time and time again has variable/convenient ethics.

I don't think sedition is a crime any how. It was in the late 1790s but expired before it was challenged in court, and likely would have lost if it had been challenged. It's purpose was to help Adams politically more than to help the war effort (it's stated goal). Maybe another law has been passed since.
Of course I may not understand the legal definition of sedition just like I don't entirely understand defamation and libel. Is it libel to imply that someone committed a crime when there is no crime related to the act you are talking about?

Let me fix it for him and you'll get something I'd be more interested in an answer to
But what if you're journalist and you're making accusations of crime where there's not even a charge crime?

looks like I was wrong and there is another Sedition Act in 1918 also related to war efforts. Looks like it was repealed in 1920 though so as far as I can tell sedition is not currently a crime.
