Sens. John McCain and Jon Kyl have joined with others requesting troops on the border by unveiling a security plan that calls for more soldiers, federal agents, fencing and funding to help Arizona combat illegal immigration and drug smuggling.
The Republican lawmakers called for the deployment of 3,000 National Guard soldiers to Arizona's international border as part of their 10-step border plan unveiled Monday in Washington, D.C. The senators also asked for troops in April 2009.
The March 27 killing of Cochise County rancher Robert Krentz has set off a flurry of requests for troops to the border, from the Krentz family, fellow ranchers and state and national legislators.
Investigators don't know who shot Krentz, 58, on his ranch about 25 miles northeast of Douglas, but they believe the shooter fled into Mexico, fueling speculation it was likely a smuggler.
Cochise County Sheriff Larry Dever, in Washington for the announcement, said the death of Krentz "has put an exclamation point on the problems that we face and have faced down there for some time." It provides an opportunity to get additional federal resources to secure the border, he said.
"While we have the nation's attention it's important that we strike now and that we get these suggestions implemented now," Dever said. "I really feel that the window of opportunity will close very quickly."
McCain echoed the sentiment, noting that the Krentz killing has captured attention nationwide.
"The communities in Arizona that suffer the negative impacts from illegal border crossings and the lawlessness along the southern border deserve the full support of the federal government," McCain said.

No amnesty for McCain! Vote the treasonous RINO OUT!!!
LOL! Great poster. McCain is a hybrid - RINO/Democrat.
Kyl is another RINO. The people of AZ hopefully will kick these RINOs to the curb. Illegal immigration is bankrupting AZ.
This is all election year BS. McCain is for amnesty.
My, what wonders a conservative primary challenge can do for you!
Both of these wimps supported Illegal Alien Amnesty for years...and are only acting “tough” because McCain is losing in the polls to JD Hayworth.
Only someone with a 1-digit IQ actually believes that McCain is now serious about getting tough on Illegal Aliens
As soon as he does, he will make every attempt to ram a amnesty bill through.
McCain: Conservative until elected!
LOL. What does that say about Palin???
"I support [McCain's] position on immigration."
FMR. AK. GOV. SARAH PALIN, 27 MAR. 2010
TRANSLATION: Hayworth is too close for comfort.
Anyone who believes this RINO inflicts his choice on true Conservatives as well as putting their own freedoms at risk.
No matter what state you live in, Send money to JD today! McQueeg is financed by the RNC. JD needs us. America needs JD!
Not much can be said about Palin and her support of McAmnesty....and I hope she enjoys the ride with the other Three Stooges....
Your days of turning “Conservative” at election time, then screwing your party are over!
Your military service gives you no right to:
1) Grant Amnesty to Illegals!
2) Limit our free speech with McCain-Feingold!
3) Increase our energy costs for the myth that is AGW!
4) Forming your “Gang of 14” bipartisan groups against the wishes of your party!
What makes these acts even more egregious, is that you do them to receive praise from our traitorous media!
You Sir are a disgusting POS!
McCain displays a boundless absence of integrity as he follows the success of Bill Clinton, who cemented in politics for both parties the idea that character did not matter. There are no principles, but only ideas that secure possession of an office. John McCain is the most prominent Republican example of this new direction towards possession of political power through careful exploitation of perceived expediency.
Politics is the art of compromise and leadership is the art of principle. Abraham Lincoln used superb political skills to implement some of the most cogent and insightful principles to guide this nation. John McCain has used political skills to implement compromises consistent with increasing his personal acclaim among liberal media and politicians. Lincoln is now dead and McCain is alive, but dead to principles unrelated to his immediate personal advancement. He is now using this aspect of his character to proclaim profound revelations concerning the value of conservative principles.
No. Kyl is not a RINO. However, he should be clobbered for his support of this foolish move. The National Guard will do nothing to staunch the movement of illegals because they will be reporters and all arrests will be made by the Border Patrol. And the Border Patrol in Arizona is corrupt, and Kyl knows it.
MCCain the liar, as usual.
Bill Oreilly has given us the proof that MCCain did NOT want the guard on the border.
SEN. JOHN MCCAIN, R-ARIZ.: I do not favor using troops because they are not trained for it. They dont have the kind of qualifications necessary. I have strongly favored us using all the technical equipment that our military has including satellites, including aircraft and other technical means.
McCain is showing us how things will improve when JD gets elected. JD is JD. McCain pretends to be JD when the race is close.
GO JD GO!!!
Kyl is no Rino. He has made a few mistakes but he is back on track now and votes reliably conservative...so he's a keeper.
McCain, on the other hand, needs to get his butt kicked by J.D. and I think he is going to.
