Nearly 800,000 U.S. TV households 'cut the cord,' report says - Yahoo! News
Yahoo! News ^ | Tue Apr 13, 6:07 pm ET | The Gadget Hound

Make no mistake: The big cable, satellite, and telco carriers are still sitting pretty with more than 100 million TV subscribers. Nevertheless, a new report claims that more and more viewers are "cutting the cord" in favor of watching their favorite shows via over-the-air antennas (remember those?), Netflix, or the Web.

[snip]

To wit: Nearly 800,000 households in the U.S. have "cut the cord," dumping their cable, satellite, or telco TV providers (such as AT&T U-verse or Verizon FiOS) and turning instead to Web-based videos (like Hulu), downloadable shows (iTunes), by-mail subscription services (Netflix), or even good ol' over-the-air antennas for their favorite shows, according to the report.

[snip]

Personally, I find the temptation to cut the cord pretty enticing, especially whenever I get a load of my monthly $130 cable bill (which includes unlimited broadband and HD but no premium channels). Why am I paying so much for all the hundreds of channels that I rarely ever watch, anyway? Wouldn't it be easier — not to mention a lot cheaper — just to ditch my DVR and watch my favorite shows on iTunes and Hulu, catch up on the news via CNN.com, and be done with it?

I’d get rid of it if it wasn’t for my wife liking Fox News and my son watch Discovery or a few other stations. I virtually never watch TV. I’ve tried Hula but I’m not into that either.

Hi:

Up here I never had Fox News. I always thought that if they would air 6pm newscast on the main FOX channel like the rest it would be really cool. I don’t think that they will ever do it though as they make their money from cable fees.

I agree 100%
TV is crap, an insult as well.
I use cable only for internet and don’t miss the tv at all.
Same goes for my wife.

I used to have cable - until probably 2000. I have a 20-22" LCD TV now, but it's connected only to my PS3. I have no need for an antenna, and I don't watch TV. I did test the tuner once, and it works ... but I don't want a one-way channel any more. I found that Internet, even without things like Hulu (which is huge,) can take care of all your free time :-)

And most importantly Internet allows you to meaningfully communicate with other people, learn and discuss news as they happen, and of course just to post things like this one :-) With a TV you are just consuming. With the Internet there are hundreds of news sources, discussion sites, hobby sites, history sites, DIY sites - everything is out there, and is instantly available (and searchable.) And if I want an action movie I just need to turn on my PS3, run Far Cry 2, and not only I have a movie, I'm also starring in it :-)

Some good Techno-FReeper please educate an old man on what’s available in antennas now, what to look for. We live in the hills NW of San Antonio, TX (45 mi), were at first with antenna (25 yrs ago), very limited reception then. Went to cable, then satellite but don’t like the trash either. A few good channels (hist, military) but not worth the $$.

Any new ideas to point me to concerning some new antennas Y’ALL??!

Hi:

Yes. The first thing is to determine what is available in your are from antenna. The fisrt thing is to go to the following website

http://www.tvfool.com

click on “Check Your Address for Free TV” and then
click on “>> Click HERE <<”

input either your address or coordinates(more exact). This will give you a rough idea of what you should be able to receive in your area. It will generate a color coded report indicating what channels and how easy they should be to receive. I.E. green and yellow very easy and red somewhat harder. Also distances and bearings to transmitters.

Has anyone tried TVU Player? IIRC, it operates as an internet “re-broadcast” system, using the P2P architecture employed by the BitTorrent sharing sites. Just wondering if anyone has found it worthwhile; I’ve been meaning to tinker with it but haven’t yet had chance to wring it out.

I quit using my television in 1998 and gave it away the next year. I was working over 40 hours a week and on the computer when I got home, so had no time to watch or desire, really.

I use tvpc, fancast, hulu, justin, and others to watch TV shows. tvpc.com carries loads of real time channels although not all of them are available in the USofA. I listen to WMAL radio out of Baltimore online most days and into evenings.

I have been doing some research on this for a while now and have come up with a few sites to get TV on the web.

Bing has a TV link on their main page.

We cut the cord in 1989. Best thing we ever did. It gave the kids a tv free life and movie night every friday night was a family treat. We loved it and I would do it again in a heartbeat.

I might even cut the net once the kids are gone.

Thank you very much for that, I’m studying what you have sent. I had never been advised of this before so I had no idea.

Best regards,

I also have an antenna and a PC-TV card.

Here is the best card:

http://www.newegg.com/product/product.aspx?Item=N82E16815116037

There are USB devices as well.

Both of these have a TIVO type product.

If you want to get serious about a DVR,

Try MythTV - a DVR based on Linux that is awesome. It has a client/server option that can have a server in the basement and any number of systems on your network accessing it.

http://www.mythtv.org/

Freevo.com is a free Tivo system that works with Windows and Linux and every other device that can play digital video.

http://freevo.sourceforge.net

The biggest thing is to download the schedule for recording.

Most of the cable channels are on line and have video on line as well.
