Border Patrol finds nearly 3 tons of pot in 48 hours

Border Patrol agents seized almost three tons of marijuana in four incidents during a 48-hour period.

In two separate but similar incidents — one on Monday and one one on Tuesday — border patrol agents from the Ajo station were searching the desert for signs of illegal activity and came across an abandoned pickup truck. Each truck contained more than 1,700 pounds of marijuana, said agency spokeswoman Colleen Agle.

The size of the loads is a departure from the smaller loads smugglers had been bringing across, she said. She would not speculate whether the two incidents were related.

Also on Tuesday, agents at the Casa Grande station used infrared cameras to spot a group of about 30 people crossing the border. Agents went to the area and the group fled back to Mexico, but left 26 bundles of marijuana. The bundles weighed more than 1,200 pounds.

Finally, agents patrolling Wednesday came across an abandoned SUV. Inside, they found about 920 pounds of marijuana.

The seizures totaled more than 5,520 pounds, or about 2.76 tons.

Legalize the crap and let RJ Reynolds grow it and tax the bejeezus out of it and you’ll see how fast the Mexicans stop smuggling it in here. And spare me the ‘’Yeah but they’ll only do X.’’ What are the Mexicans going to do? Sell it cheaper? Even a dumb Mexican drug dealer knows you don’t make a profit selling at a loss.

Mighy expensive decoy: 2 tons lets say street level, by the ounce (16 ounces x 4000 lbs) x $300 per ounce = a bunch of money

The seizures totaled more than 5,520 pounds, or about 2.76 tons.

It's just a good thing no one in law enforcement smokes the stuff. Otherwise, we might have to worry about 'disappearing' marijuana, deliberate underestimates by people in the chain of possession.

It's 'up in smoke', maybe some of it in the bongs of 4-20 friendly LEO's in AZ and other places.

Mighy expensive decoy: 2 tons lets say street level, by the ounce (16 ounces x 4000 lbs) x $300 per ounce = a bunch of money

Using the figure stated of 5,520 lbs, it works out (at $300/oz) to about $26,480,000 or over 26 Million dollars.

It's just a good thing there is no temptation for abuse of the system here. I know for certain every ounce will be burned! Ha ha, hee hee.

They just cut it or dig under it, or climb over it.

USSR had lots of ground border in Europe in Asia (39,000 miles to be exact.) Nevertheless it was quite difficult for foreign spies to get in, even though they were individually trained, and equipped with best tools.

Perhaps it had something to do with the fact that the border was guarded by the army, and the army was authorized to shoot intruders when necessary. There was a fence, later equipped with sensors. There was a trace control strip right behind the fence, so that the footprints are easy to see. Watch towers were manned 24 hours per day, and in case of alarm many soldiers would be quickly dispatched to key locations. A strip of territory, about 50 miles near the border, was declared of limited access, and one could get in only with proper documents, or if you are local; then you know the border guards and they know you, and you know who to call if you see a suspicious person.

link

To summarize, it can be done if the government wants it done. The Mexico-USA land border is very convenient for monitoring, unlike many mountains and forested hills of USSR's border. But USSR saw the border as a no joke affair, and political correctness was not even on the radar.

If it’s legal, those would be mexican farmers. They’d be selling it to RJ Reynolds and we wouldn’t care at all about it.
