What happened to McCain the maverick
CNN ^ | April 23, 2010 | Ruben Navarrette

San Diego, California (CNN) -- Dear Sen. John McCain:

Say it ain't so. For many of us who have -- over the years -- admired your courage in tackling difficult issues, this was a painful and disappointing week.

A dozen years ago, I was writing a column for the Arizona Republic when I saw a story about your jaw-dropping support from Latino voters. You earned 60 to 70 percent of the Latino vote in re-election campaigns. You were quoted as saying that it was your "honor" to be well thought of by a population for which you had great respect.

I wrote a column commending you and saying that someone who spent 5½ years as a guest at the Hanoi Hilton probably doesn't take lightly a word like "honor."

In October 2008, a week before the presidential election, we discussed the knack of Republican politicians for using the immigration issue to alienate Latino voters by misdiagnosing the problem, oversimplifying the solution, resorting to demagoguery and making scapegoats out of immigrants.

I asked what your Latino support meant to you.

You said, "It means we have to try to represent everybody when we carry out our duties in public office."

About how other Republicans blow it with Latinos.

You said, "I think that the way that many Republicans approach the immigration issue ... many of our Latino citizens were led to believe that Republicans were anti-immigration. A lot of the language and rhetoric that was used made Latino citizens believe that we were anti-Latino."

Quisling Ruben is just playing wink and nod paddycake with McShamnesty. He’s pretending to believe in his new direction, to give him cred and help him get reelected.

WE all know that McShamnesty’s bogus conversion will last only until the election. Then it will be Amensty Full Speed Ahead.

"Where is all the wailing over dirth of Democrat mavericks?"

The late Governor Casey of PA was perhaps among the last of the Democrat mavericks, and they stifled him; his senator son is nothing but a dullard and pale shadow of his dad. I suppose you might call Lieberman a maverick, but then again, he's not really a Democrat anymore.

True. To them you can only be a maverick if you are a Republican and the only Republicans with any redeeming value are maverick ones since they see the light and side with Democrats some of the time.

You earned 60 to 70 percent of the Latino vote in re-election campaigns

And 0bama won the overwhelming share of the Latino vote in the 2008 elections, AFTER McCain had backed amnesty more than anyone else in the US Senate including 0bama.

Maybe that's what finally made McCain smell the coffee. Nobody will ever out-pander a Democrat/Demagogue.

2005/01/12 McCain introduces a bill (S1033) on the floor of the Senate, during the first session of the 109th Congress.  It's co-authors are Ted Kennedy, Brownbeck, Lieberman, Graham, and Salazar.  The bill among other things, initiates a study (Section 1004) on how to set up a system where U.S. health insurers can become bi-national, providing health insurance to U.S. and Mexican citizens.  McCain was trying to set up a road to health care for Mexican nationals. Is this more infrastructure being 'harmonized' in the effort to establish a one hemispheric entity, the North American Union?  One must ponder, Is John MeCain our Senator, a Mexican Senator ruling from our side of the border, or a representative of the United Nations assigned to relegate the United States to a nation whose citizens have absolutely no way to affect the laws they are subject to?  If we're just part of the North American Union, what real sovereignty will we have?  What ability will we have to demand our laws be changed, if two other nations want those laws because they favor them?

2010/04/12 McCain's "FRIENDS" place this video on YouTube, making fun of Republican concerns on a number of issues, utilizing juvenile tactics to smear J.D. Hayworth.  The attacks come off precisely the way a Democrat attack would on each issue.  I'm sure the Democrats will appreciate this when they face Hayworth after he wins the primary.
2010/04/14 McCain gets testy, "Agitated McCain: Don't call me a maverick" saying he never thought of himself as a 'Maverick'.  Strangely the last few days are the first times he has objected to the title.  His face used to light up with an ear to ear grin when they began labeling him as one eight to ten years ago.  He was the darling of the leftist Talking Head shows for nearly a decade for this reason alone.  He was willing to carp at the expense of his own party and fellow members, buttressing the leftist paradigm.  More links (1) (2) (3)  See also: Peak Maverick this LINK, explaining in part why McCain was first called a Maverick.  It started in 2001, and McCain reveled in it.
2010/04/14 McCain is described by former Congessman Tom Tancredo as "a squish", "a liberal Republican".  Harsh comments at link, explaining what McCain would have been like if elected president.
2010/04/16 McCain, a search of his big donors in 2008, reveals some interesting figures.  Mr. Campaign Finance Reform himself, always a big mouth about how much money floats around Washington, D.C. corrupting other politicians, and himself pushing through un-Constitutional legislation to limit such donations, had a sure fire method to make sure he got his.  Speaking of crooked, I can only wonder, was he speaking from experience?

He’s trying to act like a conservative for a few months to get the suckers in Arizona to vote for him one more time. The fools will too.

Given that McCain has spent the last ten years running for president, with more time in Iowa & N.H. than Arizona, I thought it would be interesting to see just how often 'the maverick' bothers to show up for Senate votes.

Well, guess what, as bad as Obama was, McCain was even worse.

[snip]Sen. John McCain (AZ) -- the only current Republican presidential candidate who is a sitting U.S. senator -- has missed more votes than any other senator since Congress convened in January, with the exception of Sen. Tim Johnson (D-SD), who spent months recuperating from a brain hemorrhage.

According to washingtonpost.com's U.S. Congress Votes Database, Obama has missed 74 out of 93 roll-call votes (79.6%) since the end of the August congressional recess. McCain has missed 63 out of 93 roll-call votes (67.8%) since the end of the August congressional recess. But for the entire year, McCain has missed 79 more votes than Obama; since January, McCain has missed 212 out of 403 (52.6%) roll-call votes in the 110th Congress, while Obama has missed 133 out of 403 (33.0%) roll-call votes.

June 29, 2008 — Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) became the most absent member of the Senate. According to the Washington Post's votes database, McCain has "missed 367 votes (61.4%) during the current Congress." In fact, CQ reports today that McCain hasn't voted in the Senate since April 8.

On the other hand, J.D. Hayworth has missed only 1% of his votes in congress

Hayworth

John Hayworth missed 95 (1%) of 7,172 roll call votes between Jan 4, 1995 and Dec 9, 2006.

The absentee rate is in red. The two thin black lines provide a context for understanding the significance of the absentee rate. The lower dotted line shows the median value for all Members of Congress in that time period. The upper dotted line shows the 90th percentile. A Member who approaches the upper dotted line is in the worst 10 percent of Congress.
