PHOENIX -- Gov. Jan Brewer could not have appeared before a more determined crowd Thursday night, in its opposition to the new immigration enforcement bill.
Governor, we ask, no we respectfully demand that you veto senate bill 1070, said Erica Gonzalez-Melendez from the podium. She is the Chairwoman of the Board for Chicanos Por La Causa, a very powerful Latino community organization.
Before the governor could even get into the hall for the CPLC anniversary dinner, she faced a gauntlet of protesters outside the Sheraton in downtown Phoenix.
But the ballroom may have offered even less comfort.
What sits before you on your desk is the most hateful legislation directed at Latinos in the recent history of our state. Governor, tonight we want to remind you that we vote too, said Gonzalez-Melendez.
To her credit, Brewer followed those pointed words with her prepared speech, but offered little to tip her hand.
While Im not prepared to announce a decision on Senate Bill 1070 this evening, I can tell you what I decide will be based on doing whats right for Arizona, said Brewer.
As she walked out, the governor refused to answer questions, but she could hear the crowd inside still chanting, Veto, Veto!
Even though she was long gone, Phoenix Mayor Phil Gordon offered the governor his parting shots.
I have to believe in your heart that you dont want to be a puppet governor whose strings are being pulled by the likes of Russel Pierce and Joe Arpaio, said Gordon.
Brewer has until Saturday at 11:59 p.m. to sign or veto the bill. If she does nothing, it will be enacted into law.
What is taking her so long to sign this desperately needed legislation?
In a related story, 16 meth dealers were arrested in a sting on the Navajo Nation this week. A lot of illegals have moved in up there.
Who said this legislation was directed at Hispanics? It’s directed at ALL illegal aliens ... we want them ALL gone, the fact that over 90% of them are from Mexico is beside the point.
I hope she stands firm and signs,
Illegal is not a race
It's the leftist orgs and the illegals that are in opposition.
Latino before America....
We don't care if their are here illegally. They are LATINOS!
VIVA MEXICO, VIVA LATINO!
“What sits before you on your desk is the most hateful legislation directed at Latinos in the recent history of our state.”
Yeah, it’s real hateful to try to verify whether or not someone is in our country illegally and is breaking our laws. What is really hateful, and disrespectful, to the USA, and it’s people, is to knowingly disregard our laws and then act like you have some special right to do so! If you come here legally great we will embrace you. If not, get the hell out!
“Governor, tonight we want to remind you that we vote too, said Gonzalez-Melendez.”
So do the dead...and felons...and illegals...early and often...you know, the Obama BASE.
Just so long as she doesn't VETO it becomes law.
Mexicans are ironically emerging as the new racist hicks. Largely urban, but nevertheless hicks.
I have had a sick feeling for several days she is going to sell Arizona down the river to the illegals.
Mexico sucks. Why do they want to turn the U.S. into Mexico.
That's right. Ignore the will of an overwhelming 70% of Arizonians and huge majorities in the state houses of assemplby, because some Mexican demands it. That will go down real well.
“She is the Chairwoman of the Board for Chicanos Por La Causa, a very powerful Latino community organization”
“Very powerful” huh?
That is the problem right there. Why don't they have an English name for their outfit?
Is this yet another racist Latino outfit like LaRaza?
It isn’t fair to say that they are all from Mexico. Some came from points south of Mexico. The Mexican government does not take kindly to illegal immigrants either and gladly shows them the way north.
Perhaps we should tell them that Canada has free health care and isn’t so cold as everyone makes it out to be.
They speak Latin?
“the cause” “the struggle”
Hitler had a struggle too and wrote about it.
Only in California. And maybe Texas. In Arizona they're irrelevant, ever since Napolitano left.
It's a sedition organization: the "cause" is to take over the Southwest (it's usually called "taking back", but you can't take back what you never had).
And while we're at it, what the hell is the governor of Arizona doing showing up at an event sponsored by an ethnic hate organization?
I mean, will Ms. Brewer show up at a meeting of say, Jared Taylor's American Renaissance group?
No. We all know the answer to that. Political oblivion preceded by rioters screaming "Nazis!".
La Raza, MALDEF, MEChA, CPLC, etc are nothing but racist, terrorist organizations bent on Hispanic Hegemony. The only government visits they get should be from the FBI.
I guess that group does not respect the laws of the United States.
She has vetoed anti illegal immigration legislation before. I think she’s facing a primary this year...anybody? That may be the only reason she hasn’t vetoed it yet. Seventy percent of her state’s citizens support it.
I agree with you, and I will put a bet on that.
I wonder for how much she is being bought off?
“They speak Latin?”
“She is a Republican. When is she up for reelection? Either way she goes, she will not be reelected. Both sides will hate her if she signs the bill or vetos it.
“She is in a no-win situation politically.”
msnbc is saying she’s going to have a presser at @4pm.
I’m wondering...even if she refuses to sign it, it still goes into affect tomorrow. Is there a way she can stop it if she wanted?
awaiting presser at @ 4:30 according to msbc.
dollars to donuts she sold out.
I would also agree with you.
Four days to consider it isn’t long. Gov Brewer has scheduled a conf at 1:30 pm in re: this bill. One local radio station who says they have the inside track is saying she’ll sign it.
why would someone from panama care about a bill in az? just curious?
Mexico is rampant with corruption, don’t education their own people, and live in poverty.
Its no wonder why they come here.
I don’t see TX taking a firm stand like AZ is. Does TX even have a bill working its way through your state legislature?
If she signs, I’d say the Governorship is hers.
Our legislature only meets every other year
I don’t get all these posters from other states predicting what a gov in another state will or will not do.
that’s your prob
“why would someone from panama care about a bill in az? just curious?”
Because I am a U.S. citizen, and this is affecting us all even if I am not from Arizona or living in the States.
It is still my country as putrid as it has become.
“...dollars to donuts she sold out.”
I agree with you.
If you care that much you can send AZ a check cuz realistically we can’t afford it. Thanks for your concern.
RE: “About half the mex-am’s in Arizona probably support the bill.
It’s the leftist orgs and the illegals that are in opposition.”
I’m in L.A. and have talked to a few ‘Mexican legals’ about this issue. They say they support it and wish we could stop the illegals but they also say that OPENLY taking this stance would get them in trouble, and that bills of this sort ruin it for the conservatives and/or GOP in general when it comes to winning elections.
It’s like that old bit about being able to trash your own family but no outsider is allowed to do the same — These (mostly Mexican) immigrants stick up for each other, at least out in public.
RE: Shell cave
COUNT on it! The One has also just spoken out about it — those are HIS ‘voters’ who would be affected. Can’t have THAT now, can we? What promises will be made to Brewer in order for her to veto?
We don’t have the same problem that CA does. McCain beat Obama for the Presidency in AZ.
She’ll sign it.
I agree with you.
Good grief, sabe...why shouldn't we care?
Finally a governor has the guts to do what is right. Hopefully, other States will follow suit.
