Calling a proposed crackdown on immigrants in Arizona "misguided," President Barack Obama said Friday the federal government will closely monitor the situation in the state for possible civil rights violations.

A bill approved by the Arizona legislature would make it a crime not to carry proof of legal status and would empower police to ask about a person's immigration status if they have doubts. The bill has not yet been signed by Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer, a Republican.

Obama said the legislation "threatened to undermine basic notions of fairness that we cherish as Americans, as well as the trust between police and their communities that is so crucial to keeping us safe."

"Misguided", what's he afraid of? That he'll be deported next time he steps into Arizona?

One of the “pros” I see to this bill is that I think we’ll be being seeing huge increase in enrollment in English classes around the state.

That's why we're a republic, not a democracy, 0.

The individuals states can try different things to see what works best.

But you wouldn't know anything about that, being a constitutional scholar and all.

What is fair about legalizing the status of lawbreakers who flouted our laws and sovereignty? Is it fair to allow these lawbreakers to stay while millions of intending immigrants who have completed all of the paperwork and clearances to wait their turn abroad while the lawbreakers are allowed to stay and work here and sponsor their relatives to come?

crime not to carry proof of legal status

Is that Constitutional? I'm not free to go out of the house without ID?

....Is that Constitutional? I’m not free to go out velled to a foreign of the house without ID? ....

all legal immigrants are required to carry proof of legal status (current federal law, but seldom enforced)-citizens are not required.....have you ever travelled to a foreign country?

Arizonans and other Americans call obama misguided on immigration—and on nearly all other matters!!!!

Deport ALL illegals, seal the borders, and pass new laws that severely limit even legal immigration from Third World countries. Overthrow the suicidal legacy of Ted Kennedy, embodied in his 1960s immigration bill!!!!

I do not think that is what the new law says. From what I understood from the LEO on Fox from Arizonia if you get in trouble for something else in Arizonia and are pulled over they have the right now to ask about your legal status.

They don’t know but would most likely assume from your English that you are a citizen. If asked for ID you would be required to bring it in and prove you were a citizen.
