The U.S. Census Bureau expects to add up to 750,000 workers to its payroll by May, a hiring binge that could knock the unemployment rate down by as much as a half-point.
The once-a-decade census is coming at the best possible time for President Barack Obama and congressional Democrats, who have taken political lumps for more than a year over a jobless rate that stands at 9.7 percent.

Rhetorical question.
Note that these are temporary jobs. What happens when the requirement for temps is over? Do these people become employees of SEIU or do they become enemployed, which will hurt the numbers?
“Now I see how Joe Biden is arriving at his numbers.”
Exactly what I was going to post. The administration is playing the old shell game.
Peanuts
Which is why I answered my Constitutionally obligated questions on April 2, about who was living at my house on April 1 (the requested date).
Pen and paper? Really? I thought they'd at least do it PDA or even netbook for easier data collection. Though that would eliminate a bunch of data entry positions.
They should just hire 300 Million. We could each count ourselves, get paid for it, and know unemployment down to zero — all at the same time.
Let’s see...300,000,000 x $1,000 each (sounds fair to me) is only $300 BILLION. Chump change to Obamessiah. I say “GO FOR IT”. I want my payola!
A job is something you do that actually adds monetary value to something.
A welfare check is something you get for doing something that has no monetary value.
Pencil and paper. Even get a little first grade pencil sharpener to carry.
In Article 1, Section 2, the Constitution includes the phrase:
[An] Enumeration shall be made within three Years after the first Meeting of the Congress of the United States, and within every subsequent Term of ten Years, in such Manner as they shall by Law direct.
Emphasis on “as they shall by law direct.” I have read that this year’s questions closely resemble those of the 1800’s.
I was thinking the same thing. Haven’t we already had the Census “bump”? Forms are already due, right?
These aren’t real jobs.
First they are very temporary jobs, not permanent.
Second they are government jobs, not actually producing anything, but existing to take money out of the private economy because taxpayers have to pay these 750,000.
Third they are the very lowest level skill jobs. We didn’t just get 750,000 engineers, scientists, doctors, dentists, etc to work.
Bottom line is their long term effect is null.
....and it will drop by 750K when the head count is over....
That will be about July, August...just in time to sink in for the November elections.
This is the biggest waste of money I have ever heard. The govt grows by 750,000 workers. Do these workers get govt. perks? How long will they be on the payroll? With all these people working on fiat money, watch inflation skyrocket.
Also the Census will be a nightmare. People will be counted five or six times at least. No one will know what the real count is. There will be confusion everywhere and 0bama will take the numbers he wants. Such as more people in blue states than red states for sure.
I received two census forms. Seems that double-stuffing the census box, much like double-stuffing a Chicago ballot box requires a lot of manpower. Ex-ACORNers must be in charge of the project. It does not seem like a difficult task to tabulate but when you have an unlimited budget there’s no sense in scrimping.
Bullsh*t!
These aren’t jobs, as such.
It’s like increasing the number of fleas on a dog.
It’s dead weight to a struggling, beaten-down private sector.
“750,000???
That is insane.”
What’ll they ‘do’ for 6 months? What a pathetic joke this admin is. Yeah, some focus on jobs, you pathetic socialist losers.
“And these 750,000 people produce nothing.”
And they’ll be unemployed again in 6 months.
