Small Riot Breaks Out at Immigration Protest

Updated: Friday, 23 Apr 2010, 7:16 PM MDT Published : Friday, 23 Apr 2010, 4:21 PM MDT

The fight over Senate Bill 1070 took to the streets of downtown Phoenix, as riot Police were called to the Capitol to control an unruly group of protesters.

Witnesses say a group protesting against SB1070 began to fight with a man who was for the controversial immigration bill.

Police tried escorting that man away from the scene, fearing for his safety, when they too came under attack by people throwing items, including water bottles.

A young man was arrested during that melee.

Things calmed down moments later, but riot Police remained at the capital to maintain some sort of order.

Earlier in the day, Arizona Gov. Jan Brewer signed SB1070 into law,.

They are you pool repair and supply company, the company you purchased your satellite service from, the guy that sold you your furniture, that owns the company that supplies pallets to you company...you name it.

Yes, I know they are, I know the pool repair guy and satellite service guy who lost their businesses to these guys who hire under the table. I also know a LOT of old line construction companies that had to fold up and go away because they were honorable men who refused to break the law for a buck. These "entreprenures" killed the lively hood for a lot of Americans.I have watched these guys take their illegal workers to the license bureau to get a license and then have them hand it over to them right outside the door.I have spent 65 years in Arizona, I love the Mexican people and their culture has been part of our culture forever, but what we have coming in now is not the same people at all. They are thugs and who take advantage of their workers. I personally know one guy who went to work for one of these "hard working guys". He was supposed to be paid $700.00 but when the time came to pay him all he got was $300.00 and was told that's all he was getting.

Don't even attempt to tell me about these wonderful businessmen and women. Some are I am sure, but the majority are laughing at people like you who defend them while they are putting your boss out of business.

I constantly hear people saying that the illegals are taking simple, menial jobs. Those people do not understand the situation. You obviously do. You know, as I was trying to point out, that they are business owners not just day laborers.

We are making the same point I just did not put it as well as you did. Again, anyone that thinks they are coming here and just taking jobs Americans will not do does not understand. They are taking businesses that Americans once had.

Sorry if I was not clear in my original post.

You are off the subject with your reply. The subject - at least as I was putting the question - is how do you move 20 million people out of a country.

So far no takers on answer to that question.

My wife and I have been vacationing in Arizona for the last week, leaving this morning.

Watched the local news...not a single peep about this. I didn’t even bother to watch the national news, I know it isn’t there.

Simply astonishing.

On a personally disappointing note, when I pointed this out to my wife, she put the onus of this on the person who spoke out and was attacked. I think she had me in mind when she said it...

That's quite alright, I'm a bit touchy because of all the slams we are getting for just defending ourselves.

It breaks your heart when a company that has been in business for generations has to send out a letter saying they've given up, they have to, they can not compete with those who break the law. I've seen it happen far too much.

How anyone could consider this law as unjust is mind boggling.

....how do people propose to remove 12 million to 20 million people living in this country illegally? It is just not practical to think it can be done.

One roundup and border delivery at a time; just like they came this way they can return.

That answer has already been posted to you - Enforce existing immigration laws and they will move themselves out of the country individually just like they moved themselves in. You're posting nothing more than tired old excuses as to why we should let them stay.

Gee. It looks like some were eager volunteers to be the first to be arrested and deported. I wonder if any spit or yelled "GRINGO".

I've got a storyline for the lamestream media: Illegals and their advocates doing the violence Tea Partiers just won't do.

You make it damn uncomfortable for them to remain here. You remove all the incentives. You remove any and all reasons you can find that make them want to stay.

You don’t have to round them up. Once they find that the well has run dry and that there is little choice but to leave, they will leave.

Arrest anyone offering sanctuary and charge them with obstruction, remove the support systems that support the illegals.

There are many other ways, but these are just a few off the top of my head.

No, I'm merely taking your suggestions and presenting some of the problems with implementing it. At some point positions need to be put into action. What are the action steps?

It is easy to say, enforce existing immigration laws like some magic wand will take it from there. There are practical realities that must be taken into account.

Let's start with one of them. What policing agency will carry out enforcement and where does the money come from?

So that my position is not being confused, I am tryng to work the problem, not disagreeing with you on the goal.

SZonian, your reply is the appropriate one.

Is this a daunting task, for a country that people all over the world risk their lives to enter in a multitude of illegal ways?

Absolutely.

But you have to ask yourself:

If you were an illegal immigrant in China and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

If you were an illegal immigrant in Korea and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

If you were an illegal immigrant in Russia and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

If you were an illegal immigrant in Switzerland and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

If you were an illegal immigrant in Italy and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

If you were an illegal immigrant in (INSERT COUNTRY HERE) and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

But most of all...
If you were an illegal immigrant in MEXICO and you were discovered by the authorities, how would you be treated?

This is not to say we should act like China, Russia or any other country. But the fact remains that if we do not control who is in our country, then we will be at the mercy of those who not only wish to take advantage of our generosity and affluence, but also those who do not have our best interests at heart and wish us harm.

People malign conservatives by painting us as xenophobe bigots who are against all foreigners and immigration. It is a slander we need to address constantly and directly, because it is a malignant lie intentionally used as a tool to discredit conservatism.

The fact of the matter is, conservatives are not against immigration, we are uniformly against ILLEGAL immigration. Many conservatives are immigrants ourselves, and nearly all of us come from immigrant stock.

It is not that we are succumbing to “the last one over the bridge” syndrome, like the transplanted New Englanders in Florida who complain about every new arrival from New England who takes up residence there. It is that we believe that a country that cannot control and regulate immigration cannot control its future.

Ok, that’s a plan. Dry up resources, the magnet so to speak that makes it attractive to stay here. Now, how does that process get started?

My view, you have to put pressure on your elected representatives since the approach you suggest will require policy changes. How does that pressure get applied?

Everyone that supports this plan will have to do far more than just write about it on FR. For that plan to go into effect, groups are going to have to be formed, volunteers meet a couple hours a week, grow membership, organize, increase visibility of the group through media events, develop effective message. Critical will be high turnout for any public events that are planned. Fundraising will be critical.

I’ve been through those processess more than once. It is a lot of work. Are you ready to commit to that level of effort?

Some say that would be fair odds. Houston had about 800 against about 2000 at San Jacinto. The Mexicans ran and tradition said Santa Ana was found creeping away dressed as a woman.

Right. Only important/unique things should be flagged to stand out. Anyone who deviates from standard text should know going in that he/she risks a little criticism, tweaking, etc.

Amen! Formulating a solution to a problem is the first big step. There are lots of people out there who have little direction and plenty of energy.

Once we have a clear understanding of solutions, the rest is easy, IMHO, so long as we have free speech. Communications has never been easier. Online networking is not the fuuture — it is NOW.
