Reading the fine print, however, tells us: "the majority of influenza vaccines distributed in the United States currently contain Thimerosal as a preservative."
Furthermore, in a bit of regulatory trickery, the FDA is letting smaller amounts go undisclosed : "..some contain only trace amounts of Thimerosal and are considered by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to be preservative-free."
In other words, even if you ask to see the vaccine label, check for Thimerosal, and get a warm fuzzy feeling about the shot being labeled "Thimerosal free," thanks to the FDA's accommodation of drug manufacturers, it could still contain mercury. *

The EPA’s “uninhabitable” mercury level probably reflects a far lower daily dose from the exposure than what the kids get from fish sandwiches for lunch, and that would require all the mercury to get vaporized and be mixed evenly in the air.

So did I. Broke a thermometer one time and caught the mercury on something to retain it. Thought it was so cool that I coated my class ring with it. Turned the yellow gold white for awhile. Forget how I got it off the ring.
As a senior citizen, I am still blessed with good health as were/are my children and theirs.

In fact, physicians used to give liquid mercury orally as a laxative (by its weight to force waste through the alimentary canal). Liquid mercury is virtually harmless to touch. Vapor is harmful, but it tends to collect in low places. Bacterial decomposition in contact with water or underwater can produce toxic compounds.
They need to clean up the Sierra. Go to any river in gold country, pull up a clump of grass from the bank, wash out the dirt and mercury will probably be in the pan. I once washed out a pint of it from 5 five gallon buckets of fine dirt which had fallen through a long tom (the long tom was long gone but its path could be traced from the hydraulic diggings to where it ended at a cliff above the North Fork of the Yuba River).

If you know the poor mans way of separating gold from silt, then yes brain damage would almost always happen.
Still done, IIRC, in some places in South America. Use mercury to dissolve the gold out of the silt, then boil off the mercury right in the open air.

When I was a kid, we had a vial of mercury downstairs is the basement workroom. Every once in a while, we’d take the chunk of metal and drop it in the palm of our hand and watch is slowly melt. Then we’d roll it around a bit, and watch it flow like water around our hand. Then pour it back in the bottle, where it would solidify again.
I must have done that every month for years. No side effects I can think of — if you don’t count the extra tonsil growing from my ear.
I saw this on History or Discovery and was amazed how these people just breath in the boiled mercury fumes like its nothing. A good operation of 3-5 people could bring in a couple hundred a day and in a poor nation that is a lot.

Are you sure that was mercury? AFAIK, mercury is a liquid at room temperature and wouldn't need the heat of your hand to melt it. I think there's another metal that does that but it isn't mercury.
Genuine mercury would not solidify at cool room temperatures. You might have had a mercury free alloy akin to Woods metal.

For safety they could observe a wide berth around the pan or pot until it has finished boiling (the heavy vapors would collect near the ground rather than filling the air), however that obviously opens up the possibility of robbery or theft of the contents.

Mercury - thimerosol - certianly is still in many vaccines. The link below lists vaccines by type and manufacturer and you will see that many have thimerosol, as well as other goodies such as formaldehyde, human serum, aluminum compounds, and other stuff that I personally would never put into my bloodstream.

Elemental (liquid) mercury is so harmless you can swallow a small amount and suffer zero harm. If left alone in the school it would no cause any problems, period.
Its not dangerous to play with every so often. Just need to be careful not to eat it or breath in the vapors. Its been a staple in every science class. They used to liters of the stuff in plastic bottles.
