Civil rights groups fight Ariz. immigration law
MSNBC ^ | April 23, 2010 | Staff

Posted on 04/24/2010 11:51:49 AM PDT by yoe

Civil rights groups were preparing to fight controversial anti-immigration laws introduced in Arizona.

Gov. Jan Brewer ignored criticism from President Barack Obama and signed into law a bill on Friday that supporters said would take handcuffs off police in dealing with illegal immigration in Arizona, the nation's busiest gateway for human and drug smuggling from Mexico.

With hundreds of protesters outside the state Capitol shouting that the bill would lead to civil rights abuses, Brewer said critics were "overreacting" and that she wouldn't tolerate racial profiling.

"We in Arizona have been more than patient waiting for Washington to act," Brewer said after signing the law. "But decades of inaction and misguided policy have created a dangerous and unacceptable situation."

The reaction was swift. William Sanchez, president of the National Coalition of Latino Clergy and Christian Leaders Legal Defense Fund, said his group was preparing a federal lawsuit against Arizona to stop the law from being applied.

The group represents 30,000 Evangelical churches nationwide, including 300 Latino pastors in Arizona.

"Millions of Latinos around the country are shocked," Sanchez said.

Any time a 'civil rights' group advocates ignoring the law, they claim "rights" they don't have and claim attrocities that never happened.

Racial profiling is smoke and mirrors - letting illegal aliens in for low wages is breaking the existing laws so that doesn't wash....however, both getting votes from people who can't even speak our language and for political correctness is out and out wrong! Obama's SEIU is demanding he stop Arizona and other states that will follow suit; American's must aim by law to keep America Sovereign as well as safe.

I don’t believe this. The Evangelicals are on our side. Were they infiltrated and replaced by pod people overnight?

They are making a huge deal about nothing. My city has been doing this for a while. If you arrest someone for whatever reason, THEN you can try to determine whether they are here legally or not.

Oh right, they demonized my town too.

To: yoe; All

remember many of these groups MAKE MONEY by filing applications for illegals with the immigration service.

YOU DON’T have to be a lawyer to represent people at the USCIS. You just have to be recognized by the government as an agency.

This is like planned parenthood advocating for abortion because they make money from abortion.

FNC is reporting that these ILLEGALS are being made criminals by this law. THE MSM is complicit in concealing that being in the USA illegally is a criminal act.

Bingo. They are standing on shifting sand. They are like Obama calling the law “profiling” while he himself incorrectly profiles TEA partyers

These folks are intellectually bankrupt and depend on the ignorant for their power.

Obama's SEIU is demanding he stop Arizona and other states that will follow suit;

Union thugs demanding that a law breaking president continue breaking the law. Not surprising that they do nor surprising he'll remain on their side, yet another impeachable offense.

Federal Immigration and Nationality Act
Section 8 USC 1324(a)(1)(A)(iv)(b)(iii)

State and local law enforcement officials have the general power to investigate and arrest violators of federal immigration statutes without prior INS knowledge or approval, as long as they are authorized to do so by state law. There is no extant federal limitation on this authority. The 1996 immigration control legislation passed by Congress was intended to encourage states and local agencies to participate in the process of enforcing federal immigration laws. Immigration officers and local law enforcement officers may detain an individual for a brief warrantless interrogation where circumstances create a reasonable suspicion that the individual is illegally present in the U.S. Specific facts constituting a reasonable suspicion include evasive, nervous, or erratic behavior; dress or speech indicating foreign citizenship; and presence in an area known to contain a concentration of illegal aliens.

THIS ONE IS TOO. I NEVER thought I’d see white folk show enough cojones to stand up to Illegal Immigration. Thank God! Now will they protest the judge who rules it unconstitutional and kick him off the court?

...and made a mockery of U.S. citizenship—both to those born to it, and legal immigrants who aspire to it.

They broke the law crossing the border.

Everything they have done since that moment is illegal.

They have NO RIGHTS!!!

Bending to these cretins and criminals will only produce more of them. They are like gnats in the springtime.

Agreed.

If there is any doubt on the part of these church members, they need to be given an up front and personal trip to expose them to the problems with the porous border with Arizona.

The cattlemen can clear up lots of doubt for them, also.

They cannot sit inside their churches in Wisconsin, Kentucky, etc, and make such blanket remarks. They are ignorant of what is going on. The media has been refusing to tell the whole story for years.
