Rubio Criticizes Arizona Immigration Law
THE HILL ^ | 04/27/10 12:56 PM ET | Eric Zimmermann

Posted on 04/27/2010 3:09:01 PM PDT by Southnsoul

Florida Republican Senate candidate Marco Rubio criticized Arizona's tough new immigration law today, putting him at odds with the national conservative establishment that has aided his meteoric rise.

Rubio said the law could effectively "single out people who are here legally, including U.S. citizens."

The key paragraph from his statement:

States certainly have the right to enact policies to protect their citizens, but Arizona’s policy shows the difficulty and limitations of states trying to act piecemeal to solve what is a serious federal problem. From what I have read in news reports, I do have concerns about this legislation. While I don’t believe Arizona’s policy was based on anything other than trying to get a handle on our broken borders, I think aspects of the law, especially that dealing with ‘reasonable suspicion,’ are going to put our law enforcement officers in an incredibly difficult position. It could also unreasonably single out people who are here legally, including many American citizens. Throughout American history and throughout this administration we have seen that when government is given an inch it takes a mile.

While many prominent conservatives have praised the law, Florida is home to a large Hispanic population, including a large immigration population, that often votes Republican due to concerns about Cuba.

My understanding is that this law essentially mirrors Federal Law which isn’t upheld. If this is true and what is reported here is also true, Rubio can just suck it. I seriously have given up on mainstream and probably emerging pseudo conservatives, to boot. Jesus H.......

“...states trying to act piecemeal to solve what is a serious federal problem”

...The “serious federal problem” is already on the books as law Doofio! The fed has not and has demonstrated that they will not do jack about illegals except continue to let them pour in! Too bad we’ve lost another “conservative”.

This sucks. Rubio and Crist are both open border RINOs. Rubio would vote for amnesty is a heartbeat.

Rubio is Mel Martinez 2. If Crist had any brains - he would become a conservative but he never was one so that won’t work.

Et tu, Marco?

The law basically makes crime illegal:

Rush reported this today:

Apparently on MSBC they ran a headline crawl that said “New AZ Law makes being an Illegal Alien a crime”

No kidding.

As far as this guy goes, another RINO makes it clear that he is anti-American.

Other than Free Republic I don't know of any national conservative establishment.

Rubio's actual statement is fairly mild, and I hope people take the time to read it instead of just going by the headlines.

He needs to read the Law
and compare it to the Federal Law.

It helps to engage the brain before opening your mouth !!

Unfortunately, you are correct. If Crist was smart, he would come out in favor of the Arizona bill and explain why.

Rubio went from a hero to a zero with this. The good news is it saved me from contributing to his campaign.

This is certainly disconcerting, but I wouldn’t entirely trust The Hill not to twist it.

What Rubio seems to be saying is that the law will be unfortunate if it results in harrassment of legal immigrants.

In any case, Rubio is a whole lot better than Crist, on this issue and every other issue.

It would be very helpful if we had a few conservative Hispanics saying that we need to distinguish between legal hispanic citizens and illegal aliens. The Republican Party has really missed the boat in not making that clear.

States certainly have the right to enact policies to protect their citizens, but Arizona’s policy shows the difficulty and limitations of states trying to act piecemeal to solve what is a serious federal problem...

This is a measured statement by Rubio, however, I'd like to hear from Rubio what the correct and Constitutional solution for States is when the Federal Government does not fulfill its Constitutional obligation to protect States from invasion.

If the State of Minnesota was invaded by rampaging Manitobans, and a distracted Federal Government did not repel the invasion, the State of Minnesota would certainly have the Constitutional standing to use its own militia and law enforcement to oust the invaders. Isn't this scenario one reason why State militias are Constitutionally supported?

The Constitution is not a suicide pact by the States, and under the Constitution the States retain their right to self defense.
