AUSTIN -- Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.
Perry (R) told the Associated Press on Tuesday that he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.
Perry said he carries his .380 Ruger -- loaded with hollow-point bullets -- when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. But when a coyote came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.
"Don't attack my dog, or you might get shot . . . if you're a coyote," he said Tuesday.

I just heard this on the radio but didn’t know it was Perry.
Good for him but it’s sad this is even news; a man well prepared for a common threat and willing and able to handle it. It can’t have been too many years ago that a Texan, even the governor, dispatching a menacing coyote wouldn’t have attracted much notice.
Now if he would just shoot those coyotes coming across the border with their buds and dope.
extra points for shooting mexican “coyotes”?
Its because he’s a blood thirsty unfeeling Republican who hates animals and would, if not constrained, eat children.
A dumblecrat would be shown moaning over his bloody dog.
Correction: A dumblecrat would be shown moaning over his bloody dog and demanding a new federal agency to protect pets.
Of course you are right.
I stand corrected.
“I just heard this on the radio but didnt know it was Perry.”
He just sealed his reelection, as though it were ever in doubt. I know I’m going to vote twice for him after this :)
There are alternatives:
1) Lock him up for life and throw away the key - although a judge will likely throw out the decision as “inhumane” - or a future governor will probably give the animal a furlough some weekend, under the condition he returns to his cell Sunday night.
2) Apply the proven concepts of negotiation and “non-violent conflict resolution” to the situation. I don’t care what anyone says, conflicts do not always have to be solved violently.
3) Use the British solution: Give the coyote what he wants - your money, your daughter, etc. - then call the police, although they would probably be too busy to help - as their primary job is to give $1500 fines to people that fail to sort their garbage. But whatever you do, don’t harm him, or even scare him (like with a butter knife), or you go to jail.
Just why are Americans so bloodthirsty, when there are many ways to deal with stressful situations without resorting to violence?

Always liked Rugers. Will have to look into getting a new one...

Light, only 9+ oz and accurate....I like mine.
Hmmnnn....
Sounds to me like I need to buy a Ruger!
Best way to shoot them,,,fataly.

I want to see the pictures; didn’t the Supreme Court just rule that we get to see the pictures?
If he fired his pistol inside city limits, the Guv might be in a little hot water, depending on local laws.
Perry/Palin 2012 !
What's with the weasel words "if you're a coyote"?
Only a liberal believes that if you're attacked inside city limits you can't use a firearm to defend yourself or your property.
Ever since Ruger introduced its new piston-operated AR variant, I've found reasons to avoid buying one (mostly, err, duplication issues...). However, even the consensus over at AR15.com is that their initial criticisms were for the most part incorrect. Instead, the reports are that the rifle works very well indeed.
Looks like I'm out of excuses.
Imagine the liberal ads with the governor omitting that portion? We still live in a media-driven soundbite society...right, wrong or indifferent.
Governor Perry Ping.
Great little pistol (I carry a Kel-Tec P32), but it’s a mistake to use hollow points if the goal is protection from human attackers.
I am calling BS on this story.
Smells like a political ploy to me.
Actually, I’ve got enough small arms. I’m more inclined to buy a McMillan 50 caliber rifle. That company, too, is in Arizona!
Put Gov Perry on the Texas Freeper Annual Shooting list
What ammo do you recommend?
Wait a minute, did he use a sling to kill the coyote?

I prefer the Glaser Safety Slug.....
LOL - If I thought he would come, I would invite him.
My gunsmith--he carries the same mousegun as I do but with a mounted laser--also advises a lot of practice because accuracy is really important if you do ever find yourself having to use the weapon.
BTW, sounds like Perry is an excellent shot!;-)
“Perry said he carries his .380 Ruger — loaded with hollow-point bullets — when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes.”
Right.
I too suspect this story is political b.s. Seems like it would have come out by now if it really happened. Still, there is always a load of political b.s. coming at us from every direction, and I like the fact that Perry sees this story as a plus. So Perry moves up a notch in my estimation.
Of course, like him or not, I was already going to vote for him in the Fall, just as I did in the primary. Heck, I’d vote for Micky Rat before I’d vote for White.
Where did he get .380 ammo?
I have a Ruger .380 also - but not equiped with a laser pointer.
My daughter has a Crimson laser pointer on her Kimber .45,
and I have thought about putting one on my .45 as well.
That .380 sure is a sweet little thing, though.
I love mine.
It was hard to come by for a while there, but seems to be
on the shelves a lot again.
Heh!
It's good to be 'da king!
Hornady Critical Defense is supposed to be really good stuff for finicky bottom feeders. It's basically a hollowpoint with the open nose filled with a polymer pellet to help with feeding and ensure reliable expansion. YMMV.
Perhaps Palin/Perry, though I really don't want that RINO one heartbeat away from the Presidency.
I firmly believe I will not have time to laser point & fire at an immediate deadly threat...being a victim of a car-jacking. Now a stationary target is a different issue.
I don’t even know why this is news. Who cares? I am sure the PETA nuts are trying to make hay over it.
Well, this is the fourth FR thread I've seen today, even though it happened in February.
I care. Of course, I thought the article was about the senseless shooting of a 45 year old party girl.
