AUSTIN, Texas — Pistol-packing Texas Gov. Rick Perry has a message for wily coyotes out there: Don't mess with my dog.
Perry told The Associated Press on Tuesday he needed just one shot from the laser-sighted pistol he sometimes carries while jogging to take down a coyote that menaced his puppy during a February run near Austin.
Perry said he will carry his .380 Ruger - loaded with hollow-point bullets - when jogging on trails because he is afraid of snakes. He'd also seen coyotes in the undeveloped area.
When one came out of the brush toward his daughter's Labrador retriever, Perry charged.
"Don't attack my dog or you might get shot ... if you're a coyote," he said Tuesday.
Perry, a Republican running for a third full term against Democrat Bill White, is living in a private house in a hilly area southwest of downtown Austin while the Governor's Mansion is being repaired after a 2008 fire. A concealed handgun permit holder, Perry carries the pistol in a belt.
"I knew there were a lot of predators out there. You'll hear a pack of coyotes. People are losing small cats and dogs all the time out there in that community," Perry said.

For a minute I thought it was a smuggling coyote.
I think this is a wise precaution in the wilds and a reasonable round for varmints or vagrants. I think woman should be inclined to arm themselves in this manner in particular, especially with an open border and border states being invaded by mexican narco-syndicates.
Snakes come in all sizes.

Reorganize the Texas Rangers to kill Mexican coyotes. Deputize as many as necessary trained men and turn them lose on the border with orders to chase into Mexico if in hot pursuit

Is it bad that I am cynical of anything ANY politician does? LOL.
Now there are so many of them and they live so close in to people, that they are out any time of day. I've seen one eating something and people just walk by. The coyote just keeps doing what it is doing and ignores them. It won't be long before someone starts talking about coyote “rights” and “protection.”
I can assure you they don't need any protection because they are multiplying faster than rabbits!
Those coyotes can be pretty bold. I have had to deal with them for years. I haven’t seen or heard any lately and I think it is because my rural neighbor has two Great Pyrenees roaming their place.
One by one the coyotes snitched all my free range domestic ducks and geese. I finally gave up restocking after 16 years.
Similar thing happened to my brother a number of years ago in Colorado. He was out letting his dog have a little exercise along a hiking trail near their subdivision. Two coyotes came at him and his dog. They kept coming toward them growling and snarling even though he was yelling at them and trying to get them to run. Aside from trying to make sure that they didn’t come at him from two sides at once, his biggest problem, he told me afterwards, was keeping his dog from tearing into them (he had just taking him off leash to run around a bit). He had his 9mm with him but didn’t have to use it as the coyotes finally turned and ran off. Then he just had to keep his dog from chasing after them.

We live in town on a golf course. A coyote attacked our Lab in our back yard at night. It punctured his back leg and it took around $500 to get him well. The infection was horrible. Our Lab must have done a lot of damage to it also, as we never saw it again.
I kill every coyote I see or at least try to, I average around 40 a year on the big ranch and have taken several on the smaller place. A Remington in 204 rides in the passenger seat daily.
Yeah, my brother was sure it was his dog they were after and not him, but he had his hands full trying to keep his dog under control, trying to make sure they didn’t surround him, and trying to figure what would be his cleanest shot (i.e. don’t hit his own dog and don’t hit someone’s house) if it came to that.
Probably a Ruger LCP. Good concealment gun.
That's funny - when I was a kid, shooting a coyote meant grabbing a rifle because they weren't going to let you get close enough to use a pistol. Now they are so brazen they walk right down the street in neighborhoods. A few months ago my wife and I were on the way to the store and she says, “look, someobody’s dog is out.” As we get closer I said, “no dear that's a coyote.” When we got along side him, I slowed down to pace him. He just kept walking and looked over at us like, “what the f do you want?” I was so close I could have darn near stabbed him.
The ones that live in the city now have absolutely no fear of humans. You can always tell when they are about, because all the stray cats disappear.
I’ve got a Taurus PT-145 that’s small, easily concealed and shoots .45 ACP.
Maybe someday soon he’ll get the guts to go to “Constitutional carry” and drop the licensing requirement.

Coyotes are a major problem in even the metropolitan areas of Texas, let alone rural areas. I live to the east of Dallas and have lost barn cats to coyotes. A neighbor just down the road from me that raises mini horses has lost three of them to coyotes. Coyotes have even been seen in the suburbs of Dallas, taking beloved pets as a snack for later. At least in the country we can(legally) shoot them with our weapon of choice. While I am an animal lover, if these vermin come onto my property and even attempt to harm any of my pets, I will haul out my shotgun and kill the SOB’s.

Yet over and over I'll hear things like, “I had several bags of trash behind my house and these two big gray dogs just ripped it open and scattered it everywhere.”

I hear and fully understand. In the last 10-15 years we have had a lot of refugees from the city move out to the country. They just don’t grasp the gravity of leaving out anything edible. Oh, and if you live in the country DON’T leave your garage door up because you could have critters wander into your space. My vet has had skunks get into his garage. Getting them out is quite ‘fun’.
People need to just think a little bit ahead and most of these problems with wildlife would not happen. Oh, wait, there’s the problem: asking people to think. Silly me.

I used to have 3 H&K’s in various calibers. I loved them, they are built like tanks. However, I needed some money so I sold them and bought 2 PT145’s and had 2 grand in cash...
The 2 PT145’s have seen about 1000 rounds down range. No problems so far.

I agree Coyotes used to be wily and smart, and hard to find when you were prepared.
We have rabbits in the backyard (killing our grass)....we have the rabbits because the coyotes have apparently moved on to a different area.
A few years ago, shortly after we moved here, all the rabbits disappeared. You could see the coyote footprints in the dirt in our fenced in yard. I didn't know they could jump a 6 ft. fence.

Why do we hear about this anyway? Does one have to call 911 after the kill or report the kill to the police?
Hollow points are illegal in New Jersey- but then it is almost impossible to get a carry permit, anyway.

No, I wish the Obama voters had been more cynical about the Kenyan a couple of years ago. I also think it is awesome that my Governor packs heat and is not afraid to use it when he needs to do so.
