Dating by blood type in Japan
bbc ^ | 28 April 2010 | Roland Buerk

Posted on 04/28/2010 7:54:08 AM PDT by tlb

But in Japan, whether someone is A, B, O or AB is a topic of everyday conversation.

There is a widespread belief that blood type determines personality, with implications for life, work and love.

It is Saturday night and a speed dating session is under way in a small building in the backstreets of Tokyo.

It is for women who want to meet men with blood group A or AB.

One says she decided to narrow down her search for a boyfriend after a bad experience with a man with type B.

"Looking back it seems trivial," she said. "But I couldn't help getting annoyed by how disorganised he was."

"I really would like someone with type A blood," added her friend. "My image is of someone who is down to earth, something like that."

The received wisdom is that As are dependable and self sacrificing, but reserved and prone to worry.

Decisive and confident - that is people with type O.

ABs are well balanced, clear-sighted and logical, but also high-maintenance and distant.

The black sheep though seem to be blood group B - flamboyant free-thinkers, but selfish.

Now, blood typecasting is as common as horoscopes in the West, with the whiff of science - although dubious - giving it added credibility.

Some firms organise work teams by blood type to try to ensure office harmony.

And people going on a date or meeting someone for the first time are liable to be asked: "What is your blood group?"

"Here people don't like to be upfront and open about their opinions. So if you can hide behind blood types you can then tell someone indirectly what you think about them."

A little off:

O - Confident in social arena, a little lazy and unfocused
A - Hard workers, focused, but not big talkers.
B - The unique types, kind of strange, all about themselves.
AB - Bipolar, emotional, kind of a chameleon.

Is it any doubt why most Japanese are A?

Kinda like man-made Global Warming, huh? All we need is a charlatan like Al Gore to push this Blood-Type/Personality link. Maybe Tipper isn't doing anything?

I remember reading years ago that most Presidents have been type O. Maybe there's something to it.

My blood type is the same as my philosophy on life...

B positive!

Now how a cell surface marker on red blood cells effects any personality traits I leave to the wild half assed conjecture of the reader. IOW, what a load of carp!

While an exchange of bodily fluids may be on the hypothetical agenda, I don't think either of us would have had in mind a possible blood transfusion. ;)

I work in Japanese fan-subbing and indeed, silence is golden. NOT entirely true for they express themselves colorfully in different forms such as anime, manga or calligraphy.

I had fun this a long time ago...when foreigners were not so common here in Japan.

Somebody (of the opposite sex variety, probably interested in dating) asked the worn out question, "what is your blood type"? 血液は? A common lead- in question. I kind of got tired of that silliness.

So I just said, with a very straight face, "no blood type."

The person was incredulous.

Then I explained, "foreigners do not have a particular blood type. Sheesh. Didn't you know that!?"

The person actually believed me. End of line of questioning. Period.

My, things have changed. Things have changed.
