President Obama Ribs Iowa Crowd for Not Applauding His Warning About “Hard Choices” - National Debt

OTTUMWA, IA – “We're going to have to make some tough choices” about the deficit and national debt, President Obama said to a crowded gymnasium full of supporters at Indian Hills Community College, after a lengthy riff on how the unsustainable debt would need to be tackled.

This, unlike most of what the president said during the town hall meeting, was met with silence.

“I noticed I didn’t get a lot of clapping about the whole ‘We're gonna have the hard choices’ thing,” the president ribbed the crowd.

The conversation had been prompted by a question from a man worried about Ottumwa’s sewer troubles. The president said he’d look into whether the federal government could do anything to help, and then quickly turned to the larger discussion.

Even local sewers are now a Federal issue. The Founders must be doing about 20,000 RPM by now.

He speaks and then assesses the applause. Is this guy totally self-absorbed or what?

“as this debate unfolds, I just want everybody to pay attention to what folks are saying. A lot of times politicians will tell you, ‘I’m going to cut your taxes, I’m going to lower the deficit, I’m going to expand Medicare.’”

Don’t settle for that, the president told the crowd. “Ask every politician when they say they’re going to balance the budget and deal with the deficit: ‘What exactly are you going to cut? What spending are you willing to eliminate?

Are you going to eliminate funding for sewers? Are you going to reduce the cost of Medicare? Because there's no such thing as a free lunch.” The president said “the way folks talk about it in Washington,” you might think the debt could be solved by reducing waste and abuse, eliminating foreign aid and earmarks. But those are relatively small parts of the budget, he said.

“We could eliminate all foreign aid and all earmarks and we'd still have a huge problem, because most of our budget goes to Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid and defense spending, about 70 percent of the budget. Everything else we do is only about 30 percent of the budget. So this is going to be a tough bunch of choices that we gotta make here.

The amazing thing is obama says all of these things on a daily basis, while he accuses others of hypocrisy

He says: “We're going to have to make some tough choices”

She said: that Barack would get us to leave our comfort zones.

I say: that's what they said just before they started carting people off to the concentration camps.

This has been conclusively proven to be at best misleading and at worst a flat lie. Aren’t there laws on the books about false advertising? Or is the fact that GM is now an arm of the government mean that its ads are actually political speech and therefore protected from such review?

Whew, who needs a rabbit hole when things are like this?

AHAHAHAHA!!! It's HILARIOUS that Americans will have to accept a lower standard of living to pay for this guy's disastrous domestic policies. HILARIOUS!, I say. Why, wait until our health insurance rates rise this year. I'll be doubled over laughing!

Since Obumbles fancies himself a comedian these days, does this give us the green light to heckle him?

So we’re supposed to make hard choices but he promises to look into a federal response to a local sewer problem. More federal money to buy a few votes in Iowa.

The easy choice is for the next president.

I hope that Obama and McCain are in the same retirement home.

“I noticed I didn’t get a lot of clapping about the whole ‘We're gonna have the hard choices’ thing,”

Maybe that's because people are coming to understand that in 0's lexicon, "hard choices" means higher taxes, and NOT just on the "rich".

Our family has had 5 suburbans. With 4 kids, all athletes, we need the room. I wouldn’t take a new GM vehicle if they gave it to me. I’d trade it I. For a Ford or Toyota. My daughter got a Toyota corrolla and again. GM was never in the mix. Toyota, Honda, Volkswagen , and Nissan were the only companies I will buy from.

I say that any patriot would NEVER BUY A NEW GM VEHICLE. Screw them , screw their union and let them know buy sending their flyers back to them with explanation about why you won’t buy their cr@p.

I can see it now:

The NObama solution to Ottumwa’s sewer problems:

We will only allow you a minimum amount of food, and we, the all-knowing Federal government, will decide what foods you will eat, therefore you will make fewer & small deposits into the sewer system-—
That will be the solution.

well, the problem is that the zombies he is talking to are not going to have to make “hard choices”....as they are getting everything they need. it is US, the tax-payers, not the oxygen-wasters that voted for this chucklehead, that are making the “hard choices”...every day, with our shrinking home budgets, et al
