The 22-week infant later died in intensive care at a hospital in the mother's home town of Rossano in southern Italy.
The mother, pregnant for the first time, had opted for an abortion after prenatal scans suggested that her baby was disabled.
However the infant survived the procedure, carried out on Saturday in the Rossano Calabria hospital, and was left by doctors to die.
He was discovered alive the following day – some 20 hours after the operation – by Father Antonio Martello, the hospital chaplain, who had gone to pray beside his body.
He found that the baby, wrapped in a sheet with his umbilical cord still attached, was moving and breathing.
The priest raised the alarm and doctors immediately arranged for the infant to be taken to a specialist neonatal unit at a neighbouring hospital where he died on Monday morning.
Italian police are investigating the case for "homicide" because infanticide is illegal in Italy.
The law means that doctors have had an obligation to try to preserve the life of the child once he had survived the abortion.
The Italian government is also considering an inquiry into the conduct of the hospital staff.
The case has reignited controversy on the legality of abortion in the proudly Roman Catholic country.
It could also raise questions in Britain over the legal upper limits for abortion and the viability of the foetus – or its ability to survive outside of the womb.
A spokesman for the ProLife Alliance said: "There cannot be anybody in the world who is not horrified by a story like this nor anybody in the UK who would not support a massive reduction in the upper limit for abortion."

A priest discovered him moving and breathing 20 hours later? Covered in a sheet? Just lying there?
No one KNEW he was alive when born or checked on him later? Not even the mother or her relatives? No one wanted to see him?
Who ARE such people?

About half of American “mothers” will have some explaining to do;I use abortion as my “litmus test” in gauging people,because anyone willing to kill a defenseless innocent is someone not to be trusted with anything.

I sincerely doubt that abortion doctors have shame or a conscience. They are merely licensed murderers. I hope this Doctor is haunted by this child for the rest of his life.

I couldn’t use that test. I know two wonderful ladies who had abortions at the pressure of their jerk boyfriends when they were teens. Both regret it. One says God may have forgiven her, but she still can’t. I told her she could use her experience to keep other girls from going through the same experience.
They purposely left the baby to die.

It sure feels like a losing battle to be pro-life in this world. But I’m getting to the point where it’s difficult for me to care anymore whether some idiot liberal decides to kill their baby. Let God sort them out.
I’m 100% pro-life, so don’t take this the wrong way. Studies show that democRATS kill 2/3 of the babies aborted. So aren’t they killing themselves off in essence? Silver lining?
