Wikipedia Distributing Child Porn, Co-Founder Tells FBI

The parent company of Wikipedia is knowingly distributing child pornography, the co-founder of the online encyclopedia says, and he's imploring the FBI to investigate.

Larry Sanger, who left Wikipedia in 2002, said Wikimedia Commons, the parent company of Wiki products including Wikipedia, Wiktionary, Wikinews and Wikiquote, is rife with renderings of children performing sexual acts.

Sanger sent a letter to the FBI earlier this month outlining his concerns and identifying two specific Wikimedia Commons categories he believes violate federal obscenity law.

The first category, entitled “Pedophilia,” contains 25-30 explicit and detailed drawings of children performing sexual acts. The category was created three years ago.

The second, “Lolicon,” provides cartoons similar in detail and depiction. One of the more egregious cartoons shows a rendering of a young child about to perform oral sex on a much older man.

My luck would be that I would stumble upon one of those and the FBI would be knocking on my door, knowing actually that I’m a registered FReeper and looking for an excuse.

Right or wrong, Ashcroft v. Free Speech Coalition back in 2002 held that drawings of naked children, even if depicted engaging is explicitly sexual acts, are not "child pornography", as a matter of law.

I've never heard of Larry Sanger. Didn't know he was the co-founder of Wikipedia. Have only heard of Jimmy Wales. I applaud Larry Sanger for his efforts to rid Wikipedia and its offshoots of child porn.

Why is Eric Moeller, a pedophilia defender, a high level manager at Wikipedia? He should be booted out.

Given the size of all Wikipedia related sites and the allegation that 25-30 drawings were found, this is obviously a new use of the word “rife” that I am not familiar with.

I’ve gotta say, I’m on Wikipedia a quite bit (to look up technical subjects and to laugh at the political graffiti)
and have never seen this.

I've never heard of Larry Sanger.

He was the co-founder way back when. Jimmy Wales, the demagogue that he is, tends to pretend he is the sole founder.

The ironic thing about cartoon porn is its existence can be solely attributed to the fact that countries like Japan have banned adult pornography all together.

The impression I got was that Larry Sanger was the brains behind the software. Jimmy Wales was some front man who saw various ways of manipulating history and people’s understanding of things.

Here’s whats funny. Wiki editors fought tooth and nail when the John Edwards story first came out about the love child and liaison. They absolutely wouldn’t allow any change to their “vision” of John. Then you had Scientology...where the page was changed on one day, and changed back on the next day....with Wiki never explaining who the precise editor was in charge of the page. Then you had various editors who controlled the Sarah Palin page and allowed rumors to plant themselves...thus violating the “John Edwards standard” that everyone had discussed at length.

My question here...this is a forum where child porn was in open access...why hasn’t the FBI raided the establishment? Any other operation...would have been shut down completely and it would have been months before they’d be allowed right back up. No FBI raid? Who calls the shots here? Do we need the state of Arizona to establish another 8-page law and let them raid Wiki to protect America?

Me too, and I haven’t seen anything either. I think “commons” is different than the normal Wikipedia site you and I visit (?)
