Canadians healthier, outliving Americans
CBC News ^ | April 28, 2010 | CBC News

Canadians tend to lead longer, healthier lives than Americans on average, say researchers who point to lack of universal health care in the U.S. as one reason.

The study in Thursday's online issue in BioMed Central's journal Population Health Metrics was based on data from the 2002-03 Joint Canada/United States Survey of Health, which offered comparable data on the health of the population in both countries.

David Feeny, a dual Canadian/U.S. citizen and investigator at the Center for Health Research at Kaiser Permanente Northwest in Portland, Ore., and his U.S. colleagues calculated health-adjusted life expectancy, which takes into account not only mortality risk but also the health-related quality of life, such as being free of disability.

Is it comparing the total Candian population to the total US population, without taking into consideration ethnic distinctions in the data?

IOW, is it comparing apples to oranges?

How healthy will those Canadians be when the end game arrives? Perpetual deficit spending will end any country.

Rioting in the streets is not good for one's health.

The index lowers an individual's score depending on their level of disability in eight areas: vision, hearing, speech, ambulation dexterity or ability to move, emotion, cognition, pain and discomfort. The lowest score is 0.00 for death.

We score lower than Canada because dems are inflicting a lot of pain and discomfort on conservatives and because our libs score very low in the cognitive category.

... say researchers who point to lack of universal health care in the U.S. as one reason.

I don't believe that long treatment waits, long line-ups, the absence of certain medical and surgical techniques, the lack of diagnostic tools, better quality facilities and more effective services would be a reason to consider as better health care.

I'm not sure. But I did notice this quote in the article:

The survey itself did not say why Canadians are healthier

So, right there, they don't even get into exactly why Canadians are outliving Americans. They may have a different diet, deal with stress differently or not have as much stress ... I really don't know and this article doesn't even shed light on that. But it does seem to want to draw the conclusion that because Canadians have "universal-health coverage", that's the reason for their longevity.

Something else I spotted too:

The study did not include people who are institutionalized, and the researchers consider their findings an underestimate given the poorer telephone response rate in the U.S. survey, 50.2 per cent, versus 65.5 per cent in Canada. People in poorer health may have been less likely to respond.

So this was a telephone survey?!

This is just more of the same old same old. Canada is your basic good old fashioned "lilly white state except for some old Indians somewhere".

Comparing that place to the highly diverse United States is stupid ~ when you take take the ethnic differences into account.

Studies show that Americans of Scandinavian ancestry have the same life expectancy and are as healthy as Scandinavians!

I'd just bet Canadians of Scandinavian ancestry aren't in as good a shape as Scandinavians.

Be a rare Canadian medical researcher who'd dare take on the task of determining how how Canadians compare to their ethnic counterparts back in the home country. He'd get beaten down by a ruinous complaint to a human rights committee eh!

Visible minorities (ie, non-white, non hispanic people, represent 16.2 per cent of the country’s total population.

This is comparable to the US, which is at about 18 percent. The biggest difference is that you have 15 percent hispanic people.

Makes all the difference PLUS your indigenous people are more related to the white folks than the Africans. Remember, 75,000 years ago our line of human beings moved North into Central Asia and became the founding group for the Chinese and the Europeans.

Within the Chinese group you find the Yakuts/Sakha ~ and the Yakuts are the source of the Eskimos and American Indians (First Nations folks).

Within that group, you also have several subgroups with very high percentages of Ice Age "white folk" ancestry (from pre-Sa'ami settlers who somehow crossed the Mid-Atlantic sea ice to America).

I think the only valid comparisons are between the same groups, not with the broad-brush (Canadians/Americans) dichotomy, or the not quite valid (Scandinavians/Canadian Scandinavians).

Actually, your argument is flawed. The difference is not based on any ‘evidentiary’ standard but on the definition of health.

It’s got nothing to do with race and everything to do with ideology.

As for our minorities being more white, I’m really not sure you understand that our minorities are Chinese and Indian. Dots, not feathers.

Yes, it is comparing apples and oranges. The diversity of the US population dwarfs that of Canada.

The black population has a much higher death rate from violence than the white population; also high BP. I’m not sure about the Latino statistics, though. But, we certainly have a lot more of them than Canada does. Canada has mostly European and Asian, with only a smattering of other groups.

The U.S. minority populations is over 1/3 or over 100 million people.

Blacks constitute 18% of the U.S. population which is where you got your number.

Around 2025-2035 whites will be a minority in the U.S.

Canada’s minority population doesn’t even come close to the U.S.

No, blacks are about 13 percent of the population of US. Asians about another 4 and the rest about another percent or so, which includes Native Americans.

Canada is now up to about 16-17 percent of ‘visible minorities’ which does not include hispanics.

I would move here all over again if I had to choose today. Keep your socilaist medicine Canada. I left and chose freedom a long time ago.

Better to die free and unfettered than to live a few breathes longer under the tyranny of a leftist Canadian government with death panels.

level of disability in eight areas: vision, hearing, speech, ambulation dexterity or ability to move, emotion, cognition, pain and discomfort

These are all conditions that occur when you keep someone alive. If you allow them to die waiting for the ambulance, or appointment you will have fewer people with these sorts of problems.

The Canadian model of letting the sick die creates a healthier population. All that remains is for them to publish deceiving reports such as this to convince them that it is the wonders of the Canadian system that creates their good health.

You are right about blacks I was just trying to guess where he got the 18% number.

2008 numbers, this has grown some since but as you can see,
white’s in the U.S. make up about 65% of the U.S. population. 35% of the U.S. is minorities, a much larger population % than Canada’s.

Race and Hispanic or Latino origin Percentage Number
White alone
(Not including the 29.2 million
White Hispanic and Latino Americans: 65.4% or 198.9 million) 75.0% 228.2 million
Hispanic or Latino ethnicity, of any race 15.4% 46.9 million
Black or African American alone 12.4% 37.6 million
Some other race alone 4.9% 15.0 million
Asian alone 4.4% 13.4 million
Two or more races 2.3% 7.0 million
American Indian or Alaska Native alone 0.8% 2.4 million
Native Hawaiian or other Pacific Islander alone 0.14% 0.43 million

Actually, the main difference is demographic. Canada has fewer members of racial/ethnic groups that engage, in large numbers, in sociopathic behavior. Canada does not host millions of poorly educated, poorly nourished illegal immigrants who had little or no access to medical/dental care as children.

The reason could be that Canadian universal health care ensures that only those who are inherently healthier and luckier(re accidents, etc) survive to be counted.

Sure, lots of white folks, a handful of black folks, people from South Asia, people from East Asia, buncha' Indians and one tribe of Eskimo (you don't even have all three tribes represented), and, even more white folks.

What I'm asking for is a comparison of Scot to Scot, Swede to Swede, Sa'ami to Sa'ami, AfroCanadian to AfroAfrican, and so on.

Comparing "Canadian" to "a mixed bag from everywhere" doesn't quite cut it.

To the degree your minorities are American Indians or Chinese, or Eskimo, that's the same as "white folk" given the history of the last 75,000 years for those groups.

They just look different. Otherwise they've got pretty much the same innards and gizzards.

I don’t consider an african american a member of a visible minority in America. African Americans have suffered, slaved, worked hard and contributed to society for generations. They have been in america for hundreds of years, for better or for worse. They even have a black president and nobody notices. Afican Americans are as American as White Americans in my view. Now mexicans, east asians, somalians, east indies, pakistanis, east europeans (all people who have landed in the last 10 or 20 years) are the real visible minority. In canada blacks are a visbile minority only because an African Canadian is a rarity so far as one who has toiled and contributed for generations. In Canada the visible minority is catered to and put on a pedestal to get welfare or file refugee claims. They come over here with nothing immediately have someething. Not liek the days of old when you had to work hard and suffer for what you got. They also run to the human rights boards if they feel threatened, especially in the corrupt province of Ontario ran by Dalton Mohammed McGuinea. At least quebec gets it and is starting to tell these new immigrants they must adapt to Canada (or quebec) and it is NOT the other way around.

JAMA or NEJM, I forget which, did a study on male life expectancy along the DC metro a few years back. Average age of death of those who lived near the start was 58 or so. At the end of the line, out in the burbs, the average age was the national average.

Maybe in Ottawa. You need to look at the history of Southern Ontario , Chatham -Kent- Essex , Windsor , Dresden , North Buxton , Toronto and Hamilton . Or Nova Scotia and Halifax . Or New France ,

So what’s that..1.25%..maybe...Vs 12.4% in America.
I say again..African Canadians...A Rarity.
