Opinion: Arizona alienates world as "hate state" (YOU NEED TO READ THIS!)

(Actual dumb editorial removed, this is the first comment.)

This take on the situation is so incredibly wrong-headed, I scarcely know where to start. Let me start by saying I´m a former American newspaper editor who retired early at age 55 a decade ago and moved to a mountaintop in the middle of Mexico. I have become a Mexican citizen. My wife is Mexican. I speak Spanish all day long. I know Mexicans. I am one.

Some of my relatives are current or former illegal aliens who stole into the U.S. I also am personally acquainted with others who´ve done the same thing. Each and every one can support himself here in Mexico. Things just look brighter over the border. Who cares if it´s illegal? Nobody down here does.

Most Mexicans live as we did in the U.S. during the 1940s and 1950s. Americans in that time were not poor. They simply did not have Toyota Tundras, plasma TVs, iPods, designer clothes, etc., etc. It was another time, and it´s another time in Mexico. Alas, Mexico is right up against another nation that lives in a separate universe, so to speak. It´s very alluring.

Educational opportunities abound in Mexico, probably more so than in the U.S., and they are affordable, but they are under-utilized due to cultural issues. Jobs can be found. Help Wanted signs are common. Newspapers, especially in their Sunday editions, carry reams of Help Wanted ads, everything from the most humble work to high-tech positions. Anyone with focus and drive can make it in Mexico. Are pay scales low? You bet. Is the cost of living in Mexico correspondingly low? It sure is. That´s important to remember when you´re weeping over people who only make ten bucks a day.

Utilities are incredibly low. Medical care is cheap to sometimes free. Income taxes are usually nonexistent. Many people live in homes their families have owned for generations. Property taxes? I pay ten bucks a year. Think of these elements when you´re moaning about our low salaries.

But the allure of the U.S., especially to the young, is powerful. And the U.S. makes it soooo easy with its refusal to get serious with border controls.

Mexicans, if they wish to move to the U.S., have every right to apply, just like other immigrant hopefuls from around the world. People everywhere want to move to America, and America allows that, but standards are set. There are requirements. Most Mexicans do not fulfill those requirements.

There is no "right" to move to the United States.

What´s most important to understand is that we Mexicans are not going hungry. We do not lack clothes. We are not homeless. We are not sitting forlorn on the desert floor, wasting away. This is not Chad. It is not Rwanda. It´s not even Bolivia. Mexico has one of the best standards of living in Latin America. Sure, things could be better. And the primary problem is cultural. Mexicans are not a cooperative people. They do not trust each other, and trust is the foundation of a vibrant economy. Our attitudes come from our troubled and violent past. We need to get over that, but it´s not happening quickly.

Mexicans are flooding over the U.S. border at an absurd rate, and most are doing it through Arizona. Arizona got fed up, and I don´t blame them. Both the U.S. government and the Mexican government are to blame for the lamentable situation. Americans are sick of it, and are taking matters into their own hands. Thus, Arizona. More states will follow, and not just on the border, if Washington doesn´t get real and address this issue in a meaningful way.

I hear they’re considering moving the capitol of NC to Asheville ;-)

Fine, just so long as they move the politicians to Knoxville. :D

He is correct that a successful economy depends on trust, and America is well on the way to the condition of mistrust he describes in Mexico.

Just another aspect of the Mexification of the United States.

Hey, now, you never heard C.W. McCall’s ‘Convoy’? Rollin’ up Itnerstate 44...that’s Oklahoma!!

But, you’re right. Flyover country is overrun with illegals and they aren’t getting the ink.

The meat-packing plants in Dodge City, KS, became job-centers for illegals a long time ago, according to a post I read at least 4 years ago.

I wonder where that mountain is. I would be there in a heartbeat, however us gringos cannot own property in Mexico and their immigration policies are a bit difficult if I understand correctly. Some of my friends have gone to Costa Rica.

How difficult is it to gain Mexican citizenship?

So that is the reason Mexico hasn´t overtaken Florida as the main haven for US retirees? I would otherwise, and I was thinking of why before reading your post, think it would be an optional place to live a good live off your savings, with cheap costs and beautiful beaches, food, women and so on.

Really? I don’t remember seeing anything on them when we were ‘commuting’ through Liberal.

I’d bet there are several Kansas communities who could tell the same sort of story.

Nestled in-between Minnesota and Illinois! Then again, I was a geography major in college for the first two years.

I hear what you’re saying - my wife grew up here in Arizona and used to tease her NY cousins. She told them their trip out here was fairly safe, because they always circled the station wagons at night to protect themselves from the Indians...in 1958!

“Who cares if it’s illegal. No one here does.”

And that, mi amigo, is one of the great reasons Mexico is the way IT is and the United States is the way IT is.

I wonder if he thought about what he wrote? Disgusts me.

Immigration activists usually claim that opposition to illegal immigration is a form of hatred and racism. There’s actually no hatred involved. Here’s why most Americans oppose illegal immigration:

1) Illegal immigrants raise the crime rate in America.
2) Illegal immigrants increase the motor vehicle accident rate in America. ( I can testify to that after a few harrowing taxi rides in Mexico with drivers who were stunningly reckless even with passengers in their cabs. A high percentage of illegal immigrants are dangerous drivers, no question about it.)
3) Illegal immigrants receive a high level of government benefits from the states and localities and divert money from schools and other priorities while driving up taxes.
4) A high percentage of illegal immigrants, if they become citizens or register to vote illegally, register as Democrats and vote for liberal politicians. These liberals can pass laws that most native-born people strongly oppose, such as the recent monstrous health care law. We have the right to resist a takeover of our country by left-wing socialist politicians because we strongly oppose the laws they vote for.

If you ask immigration advocates whether we should allow an unlimited number of Mexicans to immigrate to the US, most activists would say “yes.” But if you then asked them if we should also allow an unlimited number of Chinese people to immigrate to the US, even as many as 100 million Chinese in the next ten years, I think most of the activists would say no to that idea because it would overcrowd America and overload our infrastructure. So their campaign for unlimited immigration is probably intended primarily for Mexicans and other people from Central America. We don’t hate those people. We just want them to fix the problems in Mexico instead of moving up here and bringing those problems to America.
