I was going to privately reply to yours,
but I think this discussion is relevant to this thread,
and your private reply conveyed a sense of genuine civil
discourse on the topic.
You asked for the basis of my assertion, so here goes:
My assertion is based on Biblical truth backed up by historical observation and years of worldview studies, including many secular resources (Sowell’s works for example).
True, people were created good, in God’s image, but the Fall caused this nature to become inherently corrupt.
Any group of people who are not constrained by Judeo-Christian ethics or some authoritarian system will degenerate to their _base nature_ which is a propensity for evil.
Lord of the Flies is an instruction manual on base human nature. This is what an unconstrained group of humans will degenerate to if left to their base nature.
There is another novel whose name escapes me, but it had the opposite hypothesis. A group of young men were shipwrecked and formed a representative government on the island and had a prosperous, successful society...
Now, which, by historical observation, is more likely to occur? The base nature of man is readily apparent.
From my worldview studies, all of the “conclusions” of a leftist’s ideology are based on the assumption of human goodness, whilst the ideology of the conservative is based on the assumption of human nature’s defects. (Sowell - A Conflict of Visions; Focus on the Family - Truth Project)
The assumption of the inherent goodness of the human condition is why the left attempts to create (force) utopian societies here on this earth, through the superior vision of those (basically good people) who have self-actualized to the point where they can build such a society.
The assumption of human defectiveness leads one to see the inherent tradeoffs necessary in any society, and the acceptance of humans acting based on incentives instead of a basically good nature.
I can’t condense 5 years of study into one post, so I hope that’s a sufficient summary.
