Posted on 04/30/2010 7:15:58 AM PDT by Eleutheria5
The White House said today it is halting all new offshore drilling in U.S. waters until there's an "adequate review" of a massive 600-mile wide oil slick that has begun to lap up on Louisiana's coast.
The federal government is defending its response to the spill, which began with an April 20 blast on one of British Petroleum's offshore rigs that burned for two days before sinking. Rescuers saved 115 workers but 11 are presumed dead. BP is responsible for the cleanup, and it wasn't until Thursday -- nine days after the explosion -- that the White House declared it "a leak of national significance."
White House senior adviser David Axelrod told ABC's "Good Morning America" today that President Barack Obama has decided that there will be no new domestic offshore drilling until an investigation of the Gulf of Mexico oil spill incident is complete.
"All he has said is that he is not going to continue the moratorium on drilling but ... no additional drilling has been authorized and none will until we find out what happened here and whether there was something unique and preventable here," Axelrod said, defending the administration's policy.

Nice summer gift for us all - watch oil prices spike now....
Now I’m convinced of it-the spill was deliberate..
I KNEW IT!
I hope everyone filed their tanks!
No big surprise here. Rahm you magnificent bastard you. who knew he was an expert at UDT
It could have been an accident, but something about this just stinks....
There are massive projects underway for offshore drilling and that nitwit is going to have all of them come to a screeching halt! YOU HAVE GO TO BE KIDDING ME!!!
A friend just went out on the relief well. Wonder if he’ll get to come home now???
Using that logic, why not just stop all pumping of oil in the Gulf until the cause is found. I like your analogy of the Reichstag fire. I wonder what caused the explosion.
Has anyone considered Islamo-fascists ?
They have a lot to gain in this outcome.
How often do these things normally explode?
When did the President of the United States obtain dictatorial control over commerce?
“Now Im convinced of it-the spill was deliberate..”
Exactly! Isn’t it ironic that this disaster and the coal mine disasters happened at the same time. I’ve thought something was fishy from the start.
Helps explain the recent about-face on drilling, doesn't it?
The WHITE HOUSE can TALK???????????????
Never let a good crisis go to waste.
January 20, 2009
Wow, I’m shocked and surprised. < /sarc>
I’ve got an idea! Why don’t we open up ANWR and NPRA for production while we wait for review?
An accident, and 0bama has sent SWAT teams to the other rigs?
(Unless this has been “unconfirmed”)
So does 0bummer.
This oilspill will forever be the ‘Three Mile Island’ for oil drilling. Gas jumped 11 cents overnight in my neck of the woods, but then again, it is Friday.
Wrong answer. Cute, sorta, but dangerous to even joke about.
Sadly, oil rig fires and explosions happen more often than you realize. This event doesnt even make the top 20 for deaths.
This only list the fires that got significantly out of control.
David Axelrod : “Never let a crisis go to waste.”
The sooner we kick these America-hating vermin out of the White House, the better it will be for this country.
Reichstag Fire Part One.
I wonder what will be the next one?
Once again FReepers are ahead of the curve.
When zero gave the green light to offshore drilling, we knew something would happen to ‘unfortunately’ change his mind....
And the evidence is beneath a mile of water.
That was my first thought as well.
Never let a good crisis go to waste...
With this kind of thinking all a person must do to win their point is wait for some tragic thing to happen.
“It could have been an accident, but something about this just stinks....”
Axelrod says, “at least there ain’t no witnesses!”
Will this include foreign countries who are planning on drilling off our shores?
Second, was the oil rig blown up on purpose? Was it stop all drilling in the Gulf and off shore? I'm suspicious of the circumstances!
Uh, I think January 2009.
Like the Obamarats ever would have allowed it anyway...
Drilling for oil has always been hazardous, but necessary.
Hold up on the conspiracy theories until we learn a lot more.
For my part..BP seems to be involved in too many incidents where they appear to be taking the cheaper route with less regard for safety. At the same time they are wasting millions on enviromental hype advertising to polish their image.
And get rid of all cars. Thousands die each year in car wrecks.
“Now Im convinced of it-the spill was deliberate..”
I agree. Once again we are expected to believe that burning oil can destroy a steel structure.
Obama planned and executed this.
An Oil price spike will lead to higher fuel costs which will cause food price to skyrocket. Yet Obama and company will blame ‘greedy’ capitalism for the markets reaction to government interference.
One rig is down, so supply should not be affected in the near term. Unless we’re being gouged.
Its gonna get bad this summer. Here In Michigan there were 4 seperate bills introduced to force energy producers to cut output. (Increase declines is poor code for “cut more”)
House Bill 6069 (Increase mandated state power production declines )
Introduced by Rep. Gary McDowell (D) on April 22, 2010, to revise the mandating that natural gas utilities reduce the amount of energy they provide by .75 percent each year beginning in 2013. The bill would require that beginning in 2015 utilities reduce the amount of gas they provide by 1.5 percent, and 2.0 percent beginning in 2016.
House Bill 6068 (Increase mandated state power production declines )
Introduced by Rep. Joan Bauer (D) on April 22, 2010, to revise the mandating that natural gas utilities reduce the amount of gas they provide by .75 percent each year beginning in 2013. The bill would require that beginning in 2014 utilities reduce the amount of gas they provide by 1.25 percent, and 2.0 percent beginning in 2016
House Bill 6067 (Increase mandated state power production declines )
Introduced by Rep. Lisa Brown (D) on April 22, 2010, to revise the mandating that natural gas utilities reduce the amount of gas they provide by .75 percent each year beginning in 2013. The bill would require that beginning in 2013 utilities reduce the amount of gas they provide by 1.0 percent over the previous year.
House Bill 6063 (Increase mandated state power production declines )
Introduced by Rep. Fred Miller (D) on April 22, 2010, to revise the mandating that electric utilities reduce the amount of energy they provide by 1 percent each year beginning in 2012. The bill would require that beginning in 2013 utilities reduce the amount of power they provide by 1.25 percent over the previous year.
Tell it like it is......
"Obama Declares Halt on New Offshore Drilling".
An edifice cannot declare ANYTHING.
More dictatorship by imperial fiat.
Amazing how all these things are happening just as Obama is pushing his agenda...
They waited till the response would not be effective on purpose.
