'It's Terrifying': Students Build Grassroots Momentum for Nuclear Disarmament Activist Students Say Nuclear Weapons Elimination Should Be a Top Priority for Their Generation By HUMA KHAN

May 3, 2010—

Scott Ibaraki has been on the road for the last three weeks. Ibaraki, 22, has driven from Florida to Washington, D.C., in a dusty green van, accompanied by two colleagues for what he describes as an important mission: warning people about the dangers of a nuclear world.

It is so important to him that Ibaraki, at one college campus, used a Pikachu outfit and ran across the campus with a megaphone screaming at people to get excited about it. The threat of nuclear conflict did not go away with the end of the Cold War, Ibaraki said, and it's people like him who need to raise awareness about it.

"It's our generation's responsibility to uptake this movement and make it actually happen," said Ibaraki, a recent graduate of University of California, Davis. "No one denies its importance."

As world leaders convene today in New York City for the start of the 2010 review conference on the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty, Ibaraki and other "roadies" are hoping to build a grassroots movement on the threats of nuclear weapons, and convince their generation to take up this issue.

Three-people teams like Ibaraki's have been traveling the country this month to raise awareness at college campuses, encouraging students to sign a petition to eliminate nuclear weapons globally and start support clubs on their campuses. The teams are sponsored by Global Zero, an organization that advocates for a nuclear-free world.

This is a repost from 1000 years ago about a bunch of teenagers traveling around Europe warning about the dangers of trebuchets.

For all my fellow submariners (and you know who you are):

Have you hugged your TLAM-N or Trident D-5 today?

I am sure that if the truth were told, the Russian FSB would be shown to be funding and pushing this using the students (useful tools) as a beard. It happened one generation ago (KGB funding the nuclear freeze and disarmament movement) and it is almost certain that this is happening again.

I’m not so sure that the dollars are from the stimulus package. Think FSB or maybe GRU.

You can’t hug your child with nuclear arms.

Or a chainsaw, for that matter.

Lesson: Only use chainsaws and bombs as intended.

Just one question will uproot these guys -

give me one historical example of where pacifism and disarmament avoided war instead of invited it.

Ten to one these idealistic idiots will focus their fury on ‘Western’ powers (i.e., the U.S.) and ignore North Korea, Iran and Russia.

That which has been invented CANNOT, and even more importantly WILL NOT, be uninvented.

Working towards "nuclear disarmament" is a waste of time.

The rest of the world won’t give up theirs, and the nations with the fewest are most likely to detonate one first.

It won’t make the world safer for the US to give up ours, it’ll just knock us out of the competition for being a leading nation in this world.

The Soviets almost launched a mutually assured destruction attack in the 1980s and then installed an automated sensing network to give that launch in case a human refuses the command again (or is otherwise incapacitated).

The nuclear genie isn’t going back in the bottle but the stalemate of nuclear missiles has kept the world out of several “hot” wars. I guess these “peaceniks” like hundreds of thousands of casualties. Even Barack prefers it to the nuclear option and has said so.

Liberalism is a mental disorder.

Barack was working to see that Iran COULD have nuclear power plants (and make their own nukes).

Funny how America can’t have nuclear power OR nuclear weapons but the rest of the world, ok.

WOW! I'm impressed. What committment to his ideals.

I think I FINALLY understand how IMPORTANT "it" is!

Snore. We had these goofs when I was a student 30 years ago. Somehow, the nuclear holocaust never hits before the rent is due, or before finals ...

no guts no glory; they can’t bear the thought of the holocaust that’s surley coming. Best for them to gather at ground zero parties once the missles are launched. It will go far harder on any survivors.
