The reclusive leader is expected to demand sweeteners to rein in its military and return to the international talks on nuclear disarmament.Reclusive North Korean leader Kim Jong-il arrived in China yesterday in search of economic support and diplomatic protection from his only major ally, after bungled policies at home and military grandstanding that has exasperated the region.
China, which has propped up the North’s leaders for decades, is becoming increasingly fed up with its provocative neighbor, analysts say, but it is willing to bankroll Kim to prevent chaos on its border.
Kim, aware of Beijing’s predicament, is expected to demand sweeteners to rein in his military and return to international nuclear disarmament talks hosted by Beijing.
He crossed into China before dawn in his armored train and went to the thriving port city of Dalian. The hotel where he is staying has covered its facade in a billowing white sheet as part of security precautions.
Footage by NHK television showed Kim, wearing his trademark khaki outfit, surrounded by beefy Chinese security agents and a motorcade of black cars.
There has been no official confirmation of the trip. Reporters camping out in the Chinese border city of Dandong were hounded out of the area by Chinese security agents just before his special train crossed the river, while Chinese police impeded a South Korean crew from filming in Dalian.
The visit is Kim’s first trip abroad since a suspected stroke in 2008. Analysts are also wondering whether Kim’s youngest son, Jong-un, may be joining him so that he could introduce him as the heir to the family throne in Beijing.

For the life of me I cannot understand what the Chinese gain by continuing to support Kim. They are way overdue to throw him to the dogs and let him stand all on his own.
The reason why the Chinese is supporting the DPRK is because the Chinese do not want an influx of North Koreans in their country.
The ChiComs know that Kim is not long for this world, so they are just riding it out.
Neither do the South Koreans, I suspect when Kim kicks off, China and South Korea will work together to try to avoid mass chaos in the North.

Nonsense. The Chinese affirmatively want an insane commie regime on their border. It would cause a lot of problems for China were they to share a border with a modern, westernized country like SK. They will put up with whatever they have to put up in order to maintain the status quo.
The South will not take steps to dethrone the nutjobs in NK for two reasons: (1) Seoul is very close to the border. The artillery on the NK side could and would reduce Seoul to rubble in a few hours—far sooner than SK could take the artillery out with non-nuclear weapons; (2) Even if SK dethroned the nutjobs and took over the north, they would still have to face China. At that point, it’s pretty much Korean War redux and we all know how that went.
IMHO, the status quo on the Korean peninsula is pretty much locked in stone for decades to come. Even if the NK citizens or army revolted and threw the bums out, the Chinese would just put replacement nutjobs back in by force if necessary.
The leaders of NK are amongst the least constrained leaders in the world for these reasons. You can see this in the preposterously muted SK reaction to NK blowing up a SK frigate. That’s an act of war. SK will send a forceful letter.
I think that there is one thing absent is the needs of Russia. The Russians want to build a railroad from Vladivostok to Seoul. That railroad would be very profitable to the Chinese,Koreans and the Russians

Chia Head doesn’t fly. He takes the train from Pyongyang to Sinuiju, crosses the Yalu to Dandong, then travels down the peninsula to Dalian, 275 miles by rail.
Dalian is 275 air miles from Beijing.
They met halfway.

The chi-coms do not want N.Korea to melt down and have 30 million starving folks doing their best to enter China.
