Broward teachers wear pink to protest layoffs
By Akilah Johnson, Sun Sentinel

Expect to see a lot of pink in Broward County public schools Tuesday. It's not a show of support for Women's History Month, which is in March, or of breast cancer awareness.

Broward teachers will join educators nationwide in the "Pink Hearts – Not Pink Slips" campaign to support federal legislation that would provide $23 billion to help school districts avoid layoffs.

Locally, teachers will wear pink clothes and heart-shaped buttons on the second day of teacher appreciation week. Five educators at Tuesday's School Board meeting will suggest ways the district can save money instead of cutting art, music, physical education and library programs.

The School Board announced the layoffs of 461 non-classroom employees and estimates between 800 and 1,000 teachers will receive pink slips as well.

I’d suggest laying off most all of the intermediate layers of bureaucracy that exists in front of the teachers. They are the union favorites... Low skilled, high wages, and little chance of getting a real job.

Then if necessary, lay off the most PC and illiterate of the teachers (yes, unfortunately, there are many). At any rate, there is so much fat to cut that it will be very easy...

Cut all the junk teaching today and you could not only extend the hours of actual learning, but cut staff by 30% or more. Sorry, but we really don’t need to be spending money to teach children how to feel good about themselves - without trying...

Let me see if I got this straight. The teachers unions have bankrupted most states, so now they expect the federal government (which is also broke) to pick up the tab? Am I right?

Megan is free to reach into her own pocket and provide such funds. Contrary to popular belief, you are permitted to pay more than what is deemed your “fair share” if you wish.

Lets hope the male teachers don't wear pink—or else they don't have any business being around young boys.

That would be correct!

and to go one further you have an incredibly pretty young starlet (Fox) opening her mouth and proving once again that pretty and brains are not mutually exclusive, and the fact that the unions are a major source of drain on hard working Americans.

“I’d suggest laying off most all of the intermediate layers of bureaucracy...”
Excellent start, but you don’t punish the taxpayers or get them panting to give you more money by doing that.
Our local high school has two(2) vice principals and quite a number of other office drones.
I read about the costs of school bureaucracy in seattle years ago, and then it was estimated that only 50% of the money was used on students. I’m sure that the ratio is the same everywhere, and probably worse now.

Are you telling me the “Stimulus Money” was not forever!

You would think such an educated workforce could have figured that out.

Low skilled, high wages, and little chance of getting a real job.

I read that the superintendent of that school district is pulling in $230k a year. Maybe too much for that position?

As soon as they get back from Spring break they’ll protest.

As much as we sympathize with anyone losing their job; there is little wailing over the laborer in the private sector who is laid off. The media, along with the public employee unions and their government enablers, have created the template that, somehow, this happening in the public sector must be prevented at all costs.

We have a district that is notorious for striking. They were ordered back to work and now demand unemployment for the time lost while they were striking.

Exactly, I work my butt off because I’m a first year teacher in the district. I don’t think my job is in danger.

When the private sector loses jobs, they’re just a number. When teachers lose their job, it’s THE END OF THE WORLD!

There’s always a district hiring somewhere, teachers know that, but they don’t want to deal with having to do what the private sector does everyday - go out and get a job.

You could cut out 90% of the school administration employees and not miss a beat.

“proving once again that pretty and brains are not mutually exclusive”

I think you mistyped. Megan Fox’s ridiculous political positions feed the canard that being pretty and having brains are mutually exclusive, when in fact there are plenty of women who are both pretty and smart.

You would be correct, but I neglected to add the hollyweird tag.

When in reality she is pretty, stupid.
