Walgreens shooter: 'One chance'(NE)
omaha.com ^ | 30 April, 2010 | Leia Mendoza

Harry James McCullough took it personally. The former security guard was standing at a Walgreens checkout counter when he saw two masked men, one with a sawed-off shotgun, enter the store. Marquail Thomas, 18, pointed the shotgun at customers and yelled, “Nobody (expletive) move!''

“There's no doubt in my mind what they were going to do,” McCullough said Thursday. “There was no time to react. You only have one chance.”

McCullough pulled out a pistol and shot Thomas four times. Thomas collapsed outside the store and died later at a hospital.

McCullough chased down the second masked man, whom Omaha police have identified as Angelo Douglas, 17, and held him until officers arrived. Jauvier Perkins, 15, who police said was the getaway driver, was arrested Wednesday.

Prosecutors said all three are known gang members.

McCullough said he had no idea whom he was dealing with.

“I took it personal,” he said. “I was the only one in that situation that could have made it any better, so I took action.”

McCullough said he never expected something like this to happen at his neighborhood drugstore, which he visits at least once a month to pick up a prescription for migraine headaches.

Reporter to cop: Why did you shoot him 6 times?

Cop: I was out of bullets.

Well, thanks to some crackerjack reporting by a intellectually challenged reporter, the gang members of the victim and the perps now know who they need to track down and kill.

I’m sure the family of Harry James McCullough will be thrilled to know how easily it is to track their son down, especially with a press that is eager to single out a Hero for the gangs to kill.

Good defense job, but I would have fought tooth and nail to keep my name out of the papers after that. You never know if the little punks have punk friends.

Yeah he can defend himself, but not having your name out there is a defense all it's own. "Anonymous bystander" is how I'd like to be referred to in the de-brief.

Funny thing was the perp’s gun wasn't loaded. Somebody actually wrote the local paper complaining the shooting was not justified because the shotgun wasn't loaded. Sorry, but he didn't tell anybody?

Several things are not in this article. His gun was confiscated by the police on the spot. He was unarmed with possible gang members who now know who he is and where he lives. Some gunowners held a collection and gave him enough to buy a new gun. When he tried to register it, he was refused (which means he cannot pick up the new gun). The reason given was he was ticketed for a misdemeanor (carrying concealed without a permit). Omaha has had handgun registration since the 1880’s, BTW. He is working little over minimum wage jobs and probably does not have another.

All the usual suspects (gun grabbing politicians, newspaper columnists, and idiots posting on local websites) are condemning him. They say; “If this happened, or that happened, or something else happened instead of what actually happened, it would have been far worse.” One idiot accused him of shooting an unarmed man (which nobody knew at the time) in the back (which the tapes show happened when he spun around after getting hit 3 times). Another idiot said that the perp did not have to be pointing the gun at him. He could have “curved” the bullet into the barrel!!!

The State Patrol has also said that he will never be allowed to have a concealed carry permit in the future because he has a misdemeanor ticket for carrying concealed without a permit. Keep all this in mind when someone says the Police are your friend. They are not.

“The State Patrol has also said that he will never be allowed to have a concealed carry permit in the future because he has a misdemeanor ticket for carrying concealed without a permit.”

Ya’ll ned a “Shall Issue” CC Law in Nebraska exempting Misdemeanors. That’ll put the gun grabbing Cops back on their leashes.

In the link from comment 9 it says that the prosecutor decided not to act on the carrying concealed ticket.

Are they still not allowing him to register his new weapon just because he was ticketed even though he apparently won't be prosecuted?

Even the “Shall Issue” law wouldn't save him in Florida. We have that but one of the reasons you can lose your license or be refused one is for being arrested on a gun-related charge. If a business has posted “No Guns” signs and you are arrested in there with a weapon you will be charged with armed trespassing and your license will be revoked and you will not be eligible for another one, ever. Even with the laws they still find all sorts of silly reasons to deny to issue a permit or license. For instance, if you were arrested in 1962 for a charge that carried a penalty on conviction of a year or more in jail then you cannot get a Florida license. Doesn't matter if you were convicted, or even went to court, the charge alone is considered sufficient grounds for denial.
