Republicans now refer to Sunday, March 23 as Obama-Care Sunday. But to millions of Americans whose lives will be saved and spared by access to quality, affordable health care, it is a day that will live in honor. For that Sunday was also a day for another group of Americans to call on their lawmakers to act.
The same day in Washington, a few thousand demonstrators assembled on the Capitol lawn yelling, Kill the Bill. Across the street, a few wing nuts (thats the nicest term I can think of for them) were spitting on and flinging hate speech at Reps. John Lewis, Barney Frank and Nancy Pelosi. Lewis was called the n-word, and Barney Frank was called the homosexual equivalent that starts with an f. Reporters rushed to cover it.
Almost ignored by journalists were hundreds of thousands of people who gathered on the Mall to promote Comprehensive Immigration Reform. With the Capitol Dome sheltering them from the sun, they ended their rally marching in its shadow.
The spirit of Martin Luther King Jr. was marching with them. Always the champion of the oppressed, Dr. King surely would be the cheerleader of both health-care and immigration reform. He would like their slogan, too: March for America: Change Takes Courage.
Change does take courage, particularly when it comes to immigration. Its an unbalanced fight. There are millions of voting xenophobes lined up against common sense, compassionate reform, whereas those who have the greatest stake in the outcome of reform (illegal immigrants) are disenfranchised. Why should politicians listen to them? Well, apparently there are 1.5 trillion reasons.
UCLA, in concert with other independent research groups, studied the effects of legalizing Americas 11 million undocumented immigrants and concluded that over 10 years, these immigrants would add $1.5 trillion to the U.S. economy.

BS. These studies must have ignored the financial drain of the additional 20 million illegal aliens that will come across the border for more goodies as a result of Amnesty II. And to claim that it won't happen THIS TIME is to completely ignore the lessons from the complete failure of Amnesty I.
disenfranchise: to deprive of a franchise, of a legal right, or of some privilege or immunity; especially : to deprive of the right to vote
Yes Donna, citizens of other countries are deprived of the right to vote in this one. That's why they're called citizens of other countries, because their franchise is over there. Get it.
Where 40 years of college quotas have led...ignorant pols like Donna Brazile.
blah blah everyone is a racist....pretty funny coming from an anti-semite like Donna and her cohorts....
Donna still can’t get over the facts: Gore and Kerry LOST!
But to the VAST MAJORITY OF AMERICANS it was bend over, shut up and take it day.
Now all the claims are, "uh, the price of health care may actually increase" and " uh, the way cost of health care is brought down is through controlled access....so that more people are covered....but they may not get exactly the same range of coverage"...
Yep, that's a great deal of honor there for sure. In the old days we just called it "The Shaft".
Sometimes the very real problems of kidnappings, murder and bankrupted social services trump the imaginary problems of hurt feelings and so-called racism. This is one of those times.
